Book of Beginnings, Story without End, Each maid a heroine, and each man a friend! In its sublime audacity of faith, ‘Be thou removed!’ it to the mountain saith, And with ambitious feet, secure and proud, Ascends the ladder leaning on the cloud!” —Longfellow We, the Seniors of 1962, wish to express our sincerest gratitude to all those who have made our youthful days happy ones, and have thus prepared us to enter an adult society. May the memories of our days at Aquinas ever keep our hearts young and pure. ADMINIS Most Rev. Thomas J. McDonough, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of Savannah fc. AND FAC We, the students of Aquinas High School are fortunate in hav- ing administrators and faculty who have dedicated their lives to the education and training of youth. Frank Sheehan Frank Simmons Chester Spears David Spinks Edward Steenerson SENIOR CLASS MEMORIES Like the hundreds of freshmen who came before us, we, the class of 62, entered Aquinas with little fanfare. We were awed, bewildered, and a little frightened. We were teased and laughed at; but in the first few weeks we successfully managed to overcome this temporary unbalance and quickly set about getting things in order. Despite the excitement over new subjects, new surroundings, and new classmates, we elect- ed class officers and formed a combined girls and boys' Glee Club. It was during this year that Aquinas adopted its own girls' uniform, and we were privileged to be the first class to wear the green skirt and grey sweater that received the name of “Paris originals.” When we returned to Aquinas as sophomores, we felt more secure and better able to take our place in various activities. Many budding reporters joined the school newspaper, the boys’ Sodality of Our Lady was reorganized, and at the close of the year three girls from our class were given the honored title of cheerleader. We resolved not to rest on our laurels in our junior year and proceeded to place five rep- resentatives on the school newspaper staff and twenty Grey Ladies in the hospitals of our area. The students who boasted an 85 average formed the Summa Chapter of the National Honor So- ciety. Two members of our class captured first place in essay contests. During this year we also retained Aquinas’s first place position as the Region 2AAA Golf Champs with one member of our class capturing medalist honors. The girls’ tennis team also won first in 2AAA Region with one of our classmates obtaining first place in the individual contest. The highlight of our junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was our task to finance and plan for it. We accomplished this task by giving school dances and by having a car wash. The final product with the theme of “The Old South’’ was well worth all our efforts. We wished the seniors well and soon realized, with a shock, that we now held the exalted position of senior. Seniors at last! Now we were “tops.” How we laughed at the silliness of the new freshmen girls and boys, remembering only too well how silly we had been only three years before. Our homework multiplied; every minute was taken with study, athletics, or social activities. Our long- awaited gym was started, and in November we played our annual football game with Richmond Academy. It was a fight we will never forget. The score was in their favor, but in our hearts we felt as if we had won. We received a shock one day as we gazed out on our campus. There was something new. At first we couldn’t believe it, but it was true—there was grass growing! Later, fragile young pine trees towered above the young grass sprouts. One day, many years from now, they will stand straight and tall as we shall do whenever we think of Aquinas, our Alma Mater. The Irish athletes had worked hard for three long months. They met with success joyfully and accepted defeat with true sportsmanship. It was all in the game. The Shamrocks started off the season with the “luck of the Irish.” They were success- ful in their first two encounters, defeating a strong Aiken team 12 to 6 and Glynn Acad- emy 13 to 7. With high spirits the Shamrocks met the mighty squad from North Augusta. The rugged Irish forewall held back their opponents for three quarters. The offensive team gave the jammed stands a brilliant display of point making when it took to the air gaining 110 yards against North Augusta’s 30. Thus the Shamrocks put on one of their best shows of the year even though they wound up on the short end of a 19 to 18 score. The Irish came back to the winning column with another region win over Groves of Savannah with a score of 7 to 6. With this game the victories for Aquinas ended, but not their spirit. They next came up against first place region contender, Benedictine. The Ca- dets had stronger offensive team than any encountered in previous games, but Aquinas proved strong enough to hold them to a two touchdown win, 13-0. The Red Terrors from Jenkins High caught the Irish off guard a few times with an op- tion play around end and won 13 to 0. The Homecoming game with Coffee County came and “went.” It seemed impossible, but it happened. At the half, the Irish was leading 21-0 but when the last whistle blew the score board registered 26 to 20 in Coffee County’s fa- vor. The Savannah High game turned out to be a nightmare for the Irish who lost 34 to 0. It wasn’t their night. Finally, the big game of the year with Richmond Academy arrived. Richmond was at the top of the ladder in competition and the Irish were close to the bottom. In this game records are forgotten—there aren’t any. The Irish gave it all they had and more. What Rich- mond expected to be a scrimmage turned out to be a hard fought battle by the Shamrocks who kept Richmond's varsity in the game every quarter. Richmond’s powerhouse football team was able to break through Aquinas’s line only twice, scoring 14 to 0. Yes, the season ended and with it thirteen seniors played their last game for Aquinas. To these seniors especially and to all the members of the 1961 team, the faculty and stu- dent body offer congratulations. All the victories won by these boys did not show up on the scoreboard. It is the “pluck” of the Irish at Aquinas that has brought great admiration not only from the Irish fans but from opponents and all sports lovers who have watched the Shamrocks produce this year one of the finest teams of Aquinas. Denny Kearns's 156 took low individual honors while Tom Bailey was runnerup with a 162 total. With Tom Bailey and Denny Kearns setting the pace, the Shamrock foursome played their way to a 3rd place in the State Tournament. Tom turned in a low of 150 to tie for the in- dividual honors and Denny Kearns tied for second place with 152. With these two champs on the '62 team, Aquinas hopes to retain the Region title and re-capture the state title lost last year. GIRLS WIN REGION TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN 1961 The first Aquinas tennis team boasted a successful season last spring. After winning the majority of its matches, the distaff version of the tennis team went on to win the Region 2-AAA tournament. A singles victory by Betty Anne Saul and a second place in the doubles by Renee Etheredge and Lee Bussey gave the girls their first tennis crown. This year the goys have formed a team and Aquinas is very hopeful that both teams will be victorious in the region games to be played in May. SWIMMING TEAM The 1961 edition of the Aquinas swimming team saw action at both the Southeastern Swim- ming and Diving Championships meet and the Georgia State meet last year. In the Southeastern, Aquinas was represented by Paul Herndon and Jodie O’Connell. Jodie splashed his way to a third place in the 200 yard free style, while Paul made the finals in the 100 yard backstroke. In the State meet a total of 12 swimmers took to the water with six qualifying for the finals. Once in the finals these six were clocked for times which brought in two 4th place medals, two fifth places and two sixth places. In overall points the boys' team accumulated enough to place sixth in an 18 team field. Friend. IN APPRECIATION We, the seniors of 1962, together with the faculty and the entire student body, extend our congratulations to Brother Claude who has been appointed Provincial Consultant. We are proud that such an honor has been bestowed upon one who has proven to be a capable leader. It is with deep regret, however, that this appoint- ment necessitated Brother Claude’s leaving Aquinas. Brother Claude came to Aquinas five years ago when the school began. During these years Brother showed in his quiet, unassuming manner that he was an ex- cellent teacher, an outstanding principal, and an un- derstanding friend. We at Aquinas will feel his loss in many ways, but we know that each of us is a better person for having had the privilege of knowing Brother Claude. 64 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Catherine Callahan Brenda Carrick Kitty Cone Georgia Cribb Alina Drake Lee Etheredge Renee Etheredge Billy Faughnan Bob Haskell Paul Herndon Marlie Jacobs Gene Long Linda Loomis Betty Lully Charlene Nagel Dick Raleigh 65 Nina Tantillo Lonnie Wetherington THE AQUINAS BANNER CO-EDITORS Judy O'Connell and Paul Herndon present Brother Richard Aloysius. faculty advisor, with first edition of paper. Last years edition won first honors in the Na- tional Catholic Press Association and second honors in the Scholastic Press Association. The staff of ’62 has tried to reveal within these pages the always-to-be-remembered associations that are so important a part of memories of Aquinas. The staff extends its sincere thanks to Sister Mary Raymond for her untiring and self-sacrificing efforts on behalf of the yearbook. CIRCULATION MANAGERS, Jim Cook and Georgia Cribb fill out receipts for the students. ART EDITOR. Denny Kearns puts final touch on cover design. TYPISTS, Cherie Carpenter and Brooke Orlando pound away at their typewriters to meet another deadline. FACULTY ADVISOR.
