a warn Z2S:m53M1 MOTHER ST. JOHN FONTBONNE Foundress of Sisters of St. Joseph Dedication We, the seniors of Aquinas, are happy to have the op- portunity and privilege to dedicate our Aquinian to our teachers, counselors, guides, and friends—the Sisters of St. Joseph. We students who walked the halls of Mount St. Joseph and Aquinas for the first time little knew then what a realm of adventure lay ahead ... for these Sisters were to open wide the gateway to knowledge. Into each of us they endeavored to instill a love of knowledge, a respect for our own talents and abilities, and at the same time, they charged us to maintain confidence in ourselves and to make no apologies for what we knew! To show our sincere gratitude to the Sisters of St. Joseph we present the following poem to them. Reverend Mother Eucharista. C.S.J. Pres- ent Reverend Mother of Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Rose de Lima. C.S.J. Georgia Prov- ince Representative Mother M. Eulalia, C.S.J. Georgia Provin- cial of Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet 2 Foreword Throughout the realms of time there have been many who have dedicated their lives to the cause of youth. In honoring St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron of our school, Marie Goretti. St. Therese of the Child Jesus, and Don Bosco we feel that through their inspiration and guidance the senior class of 1960 will attain the ideals set forth by these courageous souls who have attained life everlasting. Pat Neeley shows satisfaction for day’s menu with agreeable smile. St. Thomas Aquinas is significant in our own time be- cause he united sanctity and wisdom. His intellectual honesty never accepted an easy compromise at the expense of truth. These qualities seem even more nec- essary now. in our own turbulent century. As one of God's glad and humble servants, he shows the way to the Truth and Goodness who is also Love. We need to follow his example. To St. Thomas Aquinas we dedicate our ADMINISTRATION section of THE AQUINIAN. Our beloved Bishop presents the Eagle of the Cross award to Tippy Anderson. Bishop of Savannah In gratitude o o o To our beloved moderator, Father Ralph E. Seikel, who through his knowing guidance and faithful friendship has endeared himself to all of us at Aquinas. To the seniors of 1960, Father Seikel has pro- vided many fond memories that will make this phase of our high school days a joy to look back upon. Many lessons we have learned from this man of God who through his shining example has set us straight on the path to our heavenly goal so that we may not falter on our way. For the entire student body of Aquinas, Father Seikel embodies the spirit which urges us on in academic progress, extra-curricular activities but foremost in our spiritual growth and development. Our thanks the Faculty As we embark on the final stage of our high school career we will take with us many fond memories of these never- to-be-forgotten four years. One of the foremost is the memory of the Sisters, Brothers, and lay teachers who have so diligently devoted themselves to make us better Chris- tians and better Americans. Through their continual guid- ance and leadership, we are now more able to face the future which lies ahead. AFTER MY DEATH I WILL LET FALL FROM HEAVEN A SHOWER OF ROSES.”—St. Thercse. How marvelous are these prophecies fulfilled! What countless Roses of favor St. Therese, The Little Flower, bestows on those who seek her intercession! This humble Carmelite nun whom God exalted to be His messenger has amazed the whole world by inaugurating a modern age of miracles with her showers of wonders of every con- ceivable kind of spiritual and material favors. To this Saint we dedicate our classes—may we experience the wonders of her marvelous Roses of favor! Future scientists are absorbed in their experiment. Sophomore class imbibes knowledge of history. A cm ini an Staff Memories! How we cherish them! It is with this in mind that we, the Senior Class of 1960, take pleasure in co-ordi- nating our activities in a bound memory book, THE AOUINIAN. It is the sin- cere wish of THE AQUINIAN staff that each student will recall each event, each teacher, each class with reverent school spirit for which Aquinas is known. Business managers, Bonnie Mulcay and Walter Saunders check lay- out as Margaret Holmes, Vicky Carter, Ferber Buckley, Bonnie Mulcay, Walter Saunders. AQUINAS BANNER TYPISTS: Willicfrcd Temples, Bonnie Mulcay and Donna Des- landes plan future issue as Fran Rhodes listens. Editors Fran Rhodes, Paige Mannelly and Jodie O’Connell admire Christ- mas issue while Brother Aidan shows approval of copy. Judging by the enthusiastic reception of each copy of The Aquinas Banner, our school newspaper fulfills its task of keeping the faculty and student body properly in- formed of news around the school. Under the capable guidance of Brother Aidan Francis, The Aquinas Banner ranks as a true herald of the Catholic press. Brother Aidan and Fran Rhodes conduct a meeting of newspaper staff. 41 Mrs. E. Long discusses the need of the sodalists assistance in a current cancer drive. SODALITY OFFICERS: Tippy Anderson. Cheric Carpenter, Anne Smith Paige Mannelly. Sister Victoria Marie, faculty advisor. Informal gathering of typical monthly meeting. Sodality The Girls’ Sodality, under the title of Our Lady, Queen of Angels, is the link which rounds out the spiritual phase of all extra-curricular activities. Enthusiasm has been the prime factor in the Sodality this year judging from the large percentage of Sodalists attending the monthly meet- ings. Under the capable direction of Sister Victoria Marie the girls have been able to have a project in connection with each meeting. The members feel that they have benefited by the spiritual ideals set forth by the Sodality and that they are qualified to be true Sodalists. Tippy Anderson, Prefect, crowns our Blessed Mother in an impressive ceremony. The Boys’ Sodality, under the direction of Brother Cornelius, F.M.S., has accomplished many worthwhile projects this year. Truly Our Blessed Mother must approve of their sincere efforts to make their Sodality an ideal activity of the school. Besides taking part in spiritual proj- ects the boys have aided Christ’s poor at Thanks- giving and Christmas. SODALITY PREFECTS: Richard Leonard, Eddie Rhodes, Frankie Sheehan, Frankie Smith. Sodality Prefects prepare baskets for the needy at Thanksgiving. Sodalists are shown attending Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament in the school chapel. Aquinas Glee Club—11th and 12th grades represented. Accompanist, Nina Tantillo. This Is My Coun- try! May the Voice of Freedom re- sound throughout the world to unite men under the common bond of love and co-opera- tion! With this in- spiring theme our Spring Concert On Wings of Song, reached its dramat- ic climax. With just pride, we add this excellent musical entertainment to our young heritage, for the Aquinas Glee and Choral Clubs have devel- oped from a tiny seed into a growing and promising flower. Glee Club On wings of song will take you Glee Club Officers: Sister Mary John, director; Alice Powell, Elaine Harding, and Frances McLaughlin. Nina Tantillo, missing. The Spring concert reflected not only the diligent work of our director. Sister Mary John, and also the students but the glory of our three-year Alma Mater. Let us rejoice in our third year! The Aquinas High football team found it hard to get its offense rolling during the first half of the 1959 season. After dropping the first six games, the Fighting Irish came to life for their Homecoming game with an eight to nothing victory over Coffee County. The game was not as close as the score indicates since Coffee only penetrated Irish territory twice during the entire game. After losing a close contest to L.B.C. that should have ended in a Shamrock victory, the Fighting Irish trounced Evans in the Shrine Bowl game, with the subs playing the second half. In the final game of the year Richmond proved too powerful an opponent, and defeated a plucky little Irish team in score but not in spirit. Irish Golfers Region Champs Under the watchful eye of Gene Howerdd. trainer. Billy Findlay practices his putts with (L-R) Greg Picard. Sam Schafer, and Denny Kearns looking on. Aquinas High won its first region 2-AAA championship in history this year. The team, which had finished no better than second in a golf meet all season, ripped the velvet carpet from under the feet of second place Richmond Academy. Sam Schafer led the Irish attack with a 79-72 for a 151, followed by Greg Picard with a 159, Billy Findlay with a 165, and Denny Kearns with a 166. Since this was the first year Aquinas has competed in region golf competition this victory was truly remarkable. 60 CONGRATULATIONS and BEST WISHES to STAFF, PUPILS and GRADUATES of AQUINAS HIGH SACRED HEART PARISH TOWN TAVERN Broad at 7th Street FINEST FOODS AT POPULAR PRICES • LUNCHEONS —DINNERS —PRIVATE PARTIES 6t Compliments of DORIS JEWELERS COMPLIMENTS OF AUGUSTA CLEARING HOUSE ASSOCIATION - RAILROAD MAIN OMICI lw Inlranun • tt BROAD STRUT • S20 RIYNOLDS STRUT WALTON WAY OFFICI t 1602 WALTON WAY MIMSIR.
