The History ' XppOHEOUt.T HIGH SCHOOL a In the beginning . . . Two Towns Came Together It began In 1948 when the legislature passed a law which permitted small towns without high schools to organize themselves into regional school districts. Several towns began to work under this new legislation and the time had come for Freetown and Lakeville to give it some serious thought. Lakeville students had been attending Middle- boro High School and Freetown students had been attend- ing either New Bedford, Fall River, or Dighton High School. The arrangements had been ideal, but the towns were fast growing and sooner or later, other alternatives had to be found. Mr. George Austin organized the first regional meeting in 1 this area and this is the most important reason we have n the school system we have today. Carver, Lakeville, a Rochester, Mattapoisett, Berkley, Freetown, and Dighton » all attended that first meeting. Deliberations went on for f several years and the group that seemed to emerge was i that of Carver, Lakeville, Rochester, Freetown, and Berk- ley. After many more meetings. Carver began to pull i away from the group because of the distance involved in j any possible location of the school. I

' I [ The four towns remaining drew up preliminary agree- ? ments and things seemed to be running smoothly. The t I ■ B ; agreements were put to vote in each of the four towns 1 ' which was common practice at the time. Lakeville and f Freetown supported the issue very strongly, but there j» seemed to be problems with Rochester and Berkley. The r J I vote in Rochester was very, very close, but for unknown I reasons, Rochester pulled out of the group and later joined Marion and Mattapoisett to form the Old Rochester I District. Berkley was problem in itself. They voted the issue down the first time but asked for another chance. The Regional Committee agreed to allow Berley to poll the issue again, but there were several conditions on the agreement. The Committee was going to draw up two contracts, one including Lakeville, Freetown, and Berk- ley, and the other including only Freetown and Lakeville. They would vote on the first contract and if Berkley again voted it down, they would vote on the second. Berkley voted the issue down, and thus, Apponequet for the towns of Lakeville and Freetown.
