Foreword Music is a universal language. People of all nations can find pleasure in a melody with- out understanding the language in which the lyrics are written. As the styie and rhythm of music change, people acquire an appreciation for new sounds. However, it seems that every generation adopts a style of music by which it is identified. Our generation expresses its feelings through many forms of music— folk, soul, and rock among them. The lyrics of contemporary songs reflect the thoughts and emotions of young people. In this era, songs of protest, as against war, poverty, discrimination, and discontent, are as significant as songs of love and optimism. The Polarion is a picture diary of the Cla s of ' 69. The yearbook staff has undertaken to trace the lives of the members of the Senior Class through various stages (beginning when we were ' 51 Soul Babies and advancing until we became ' 69 Soul Babies). How- ever, the Polarion is mainly a composite of the significant events of our Senior year. Popular song titles and lyrics have been used as captions throughout the Polarion. It is our hope that the 1969 Polarion has captured the soul of the Class of ' 69 and the spirit of Apponequet.

Superintendent ' s Message Mr. George R. Austin Superinfendent of Schools find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are mov- ing. The above words are credited to Oliver Wendell Holmes, a noted physician and author whose life- time spanned the majority of the years of the nine- teenth century. No doubt his choice of words reflect- ed his concern for the times in which he lived, yet are just as applicable today. The United States is a young nation, compared with the majority of the others. In the process of its growth and development, this country has always been able to expand to other relatively undeveloped areas. People, dissatisfied with their lives in a given set of circumstances, could always find ways to solve their problems by moving or finding other employment. With the continued population growth, the advance technology, the rapid rise in the standard of living and the ever-expanding contacts with all parts of the world, it is no longer possible for us as a people to turn our backs to a problem and go else- where. We have to meet problems on a face-to- face basis. There now is no other way out. Each generation produces its leaders. You, as a part of the on-coming generation will be no exception. As the noted author quoted above wrote, where we stand is not nearly as important as where we are going. You stand now at the close of your public elementary and secondary school career. Where you are going from this point is more important. His- torically, the Amerfcan imagination has always been adequate to finding the answers to problems. Youth has been trained in such an atmosphere. This prom- ises well for the future. Mr. Arthur P. Silvester Assistant Superintendent of Schools
