Two states of mInd summarlze my recollectIons of Ap pleton Htgh School my happIness the day I entered the school my happtness the day I left It The IntervenIng years packed wIth BCTIVIIY Csome of It worthwhIle most of It futile! were pleasant enough and fast movIng I had many student and faculty frIends and whule the former delnghted In play Ing lFICkS on me and laughmg at my expense the latter des paIred of a student who refused to work for grades and who Instead of makIng parrot lIke repetItIons of assIgnments had the unpardonable tendency to dISCUSS Ideas and thetr ramlfica tIonS OutstandIng among the hIgh school Incndents that I fondly remember are PGTIICIDBTIOD In the Senuor Class Play wInnIng a gold medal for speed typIng wrItIng an artIcle for the school paper havIng It refused by the student edntors as No good and thereupon sellIng It to a natlonal magazIne and the tnme that our speech Instructor MISS MCNSVID arranged to have me play a pIano group for the student body durIng assembly The hour was to be shared wIth one of our athletlc heroes who was to do a make up elocutlon What a chance thought some of hIs pals to pull a fast one on Schwerkel Whlch they proceeded to do by placIng an alarm clock Insude the plano and settIng It to go off when I should be In the mndst of my first number TheIr antIcIpatory glee over my dIscomfiture was heard by Mnss MCNSVID who thus havlng Wlnd of the matter changed the order of the program and the clock Instead of spoIlIng my Rhapsody woke up the through hIS recItatIon Everybody was In convulsuons Muslc was out of the QUESTION that day and I played for the students another tIme Before begInnIng however I assured them there was no clock In the pIano and that they could go to sleep In all securlty Most of them I thtnk gladly complted though I must say that theIr lusty applause when I had fin Ished stIll rlngs Ioyously ID my ears 1 the tItle often bestowed upon IrvIng Schwerke For twenty five years he made hIs home IH ParIs as the musIcal correspondent for newspapers all over the world In addItIon he Introduced AmerIcan musIc to the Europeans Mr Schwerke has been the re Clplenf of many awards IncludIng the KnIght of the LEQIOH of Honor In France WIll Ross IS the only one of our graduates Included here in Page 'IO who IS not lIvIng but because of the momentous work he accomplIshed durung hIs IIfe we feel he should be Included He was a student at Ryan Hngh at the tlme that It burned Although he was often Ill WIII managed to make the basket ball and football squads but was the first to admlt that he was no banner student When WIll was twenty he was told that he had tuber culosIs He went to the Southwest to find a clImate cure but soon came back more dead than alIve to begln the struggle for IIfe whIch has Insplred mIllIons of T B vIctIms ever slnce After he had Improved somewhat he opened a P X for the patlents and employees gf the sanItorIum whIch he later ex panded Into one of the largest hospltal supply compantes ID the natton WIII also threw hImself wholeheartedly Into T B control work In 1945 he was the second non medIcal man to become presldent of the NatIonal Tuberculosts AssocIatIon It IS In hIs honor that the AssocIatIon annually awards the WIII Ross Medal for outstandmg and dIstInguIshed contrIbutIon to the tuberculosIs control movement a remInder to mIllIons of an Appleton boy who refused to be thwarted by what seemed to be an unsurmountable handIcap , I. . . . - i X I . 1'- fx., rub ZlSfTIu Though relatuvely young Edward Weusmuller p tron of AHS s Quull and Scroll chapter has ac quured a remarkable record as a poet When only Serves of Young Poets As a Rhodes Scholar h stcdued at Oxford he receuved a doctors degree there and later became presudent of the Unuverslly s poetucal socuety In addutuon to orugunal poetry Mr Weusmuller us also famous for hus versonuflcatuon of Multon As presudent of the Campbell Soup Company Beverly Murphy represents AHS un the busuness world He made a very valuable contrubutuon durung the war by workung as a commuttee head for the War Productuon Board The hugh school years must be a partucularly umpressuon In 1931 when I graduated from Appleton Hugh School the old buuldung was stull un use So my physucal recollectuons are of dark halls worn staurs and rooms luke crammed pock ets of the racket of saggung locker doors beung slammed and of the uourneyung odors of damp bruck gym socks cook ung sweepung compound escaped H S and agung wood and plaster Yet these are pleasant memorues because I enuoyed myself un hugh school What dud I en oy? Everythung Ut cant have been true but ut seems so nowl Blowung glass and doung uduot experu ments un the chem lab after hours Wrutung a new land really unnecessaryl Hfth act for Macbeth Doodlung wuth my com pass and protractor un geometry class Wrutung features for the Talusman features whuch un our unnocence I and my classmates thought slyly sophustucated and excrucuatungly funny Dud I learn anythung'? Less perhaps than I thought but an astonushung amount I wush I could pun medals on those who let me learn un class and out they cannot be named here but they are all fondly remembered What paragons they were and are' For to be a hugh school teacher and survuve a person must surely have a cast uron constututuon nerves luke hawsers the udealusm and the dusposutuon of an apprentuce saunt and a practucal untellu gence whuch applued say to Bug Busuness would blow the lud off the stock market unsude sux months Why should such magnuflcent beungs remaun as hugh school teachers when any one of them could obvuously hold wuth dustunctuon any uob Gabruel'P The answer can only be that IGod help them and God bless themll they want to be hugh school teachers to help a luttle along the uneasy way those muddled demand ung strudent cheerful lazy acquusutuve uuttery affectuonate touchy secretuve frustrated uproaruous anumals that are the young of Man Thats you But dont look now later wull be soon enough Say twenty three years from now 'QW' able peruod un ones lufe or the unfluence of Appleton Hugh School must be potent I suspect that both factors are um portant because my recollectuons of the four years spent un the old Appleton Hugh School buuldung are remarkably vuvud The many hours devoted to preparatuon of materual for the CLARION the excutement over the vuctorues of the football and basketball teams and the perQ'taI unterest and the un spuratuon provuded by the teachers, uncludung Mr Rasey Mr Helble Muss Harper Muss Klumb Muss Mueller Mr Hugh Muss Jacobs and others seem as clear un my mund today as they were thurty years ago I owe much to Appleton Hugh School uts faculty and my classmates for an exceptuonally happy tume of my Iufe and for a preparatuon that has meant much to me for many years I O Page 9 I I 1 1 ' I. wut-e Especually Father Gladys Tabers most famous book us not her only claum to fame She has also made an excellent reputatuon as assustant edutor of ladues Home Journal playwrught and teacher of I dud not dustunguush myself un any way un Hugh School days and can only claum wrutung wuth a degree of success a serues of storues about college lufe whuch appeared un the I remember golden Autumn mornungs when I walked from Brokaw Place to Hugh School wearung my dark blue wool muddy suut laced wuth scarlet rubbon and carryung Twelve Centurues of Prose and Poetry un my book bag And a whole wonderful day ahead packed wuth excutement lt was a golden tume The old school was small enough so the faculty had plenty of tume to be fruendly we hung around after hours lust talkung thungs over Physucal Educa tuon was unformal we played basketball and learned the lrush Reel We wore dark serge bloomers black stockungs whute muddues stout shoes Workung on the Claruon was a terrufic uob Should we have a marbeluzed punk and green cover or a blue and yellow one? Could we ask what popular Englush teacher and what Hustory teacher got tupped out of a sleugh'? Probably nothung could ever compare wuth the delught of havung the lead un the Senuor play Makung my entrance down a flught of ruckety stage staurs I nearly fell on my face The hero forgot to come on stage un one act he was suckung a lemon behund the props somewhere The offstage nouses all came at the wrong tume and ut was a fine productuonl Rose Ellen McNevun was a tradutuon un those days any student who rehearsed or recuted the Fall of Tarquun under her guud ance was unspured to be a famous actor I was always sure we won the football games because my beau was left end In Assembly room durung study hour I could lay down my copy of Immensee and wander past the wundow and watch the team practusung un the bug sude yard Football rallues wuth a hugh fire leapung un the dark and the players makung memorable speeches such as Sure hope We wun tomorrow It all adds up to a wonderful school the teachung was superuor the spurut fine and my only complaunt as I got that rolled duploma was that ut ended so soon' Claruon All my growung years were spent un what us now the Phu Delta Theta House on the Lawrence Campus so had hrst nand knowledge I always leaned warmly to the Theatre but never got further than takung comedy parts A try at debatung was my only untellectual approach to hugher educatuon After eught years of study un college and professuonal schools the gurls at Mount Holyoke un South Hadley Mass achusetts had the great pleasure of my unstructuon Thus wuth a turn un the professuonal theatre brought me unto Gurl Scoutung My chuef Interest has always been wuth chuldren and I can safely say that my present organuzatuon has been a puoneer In what us now called creatuve dramatucs Although Oleda Schrottky claums that she dtd not dustunguush herself un hugh school she certaunly has obtauned a great deal of recognutuon sunce grad uatuon Muss Schrottky us now head of the dramatucs duvusuon of the Natuonal aw ,F I 4'Y' Gurl Scouts and us unfluentual un untroducung the theatre to her followers Page 'I1 . . . . . ,, - 1, . , .
