Bates and Forbush run the lndian ends to set up the first score . . . Bates plunges over, lforbush converts for the hrst of three perfect place kicks . . . Tricky Oshkosh T-formation produces as big ,Iovaag runs 04 yards to tie the game up . . . Indians' Blitz kicks a second period Field goal . . . Appleton trails, io-7, at half- time . . . Terrors come back to roll the Oshkosh team into the sawdust . . . Reed Forbush throws two sweet passes to halfback Schuh and end Frailing to set up another Bates touchdown . . . Appleton rubs it in by an- other power drive to a score in a hne football display '... this game sees Coach Dillon cocking an eye to future years as many sophs and juniors see action. APPLETON 6-EAST GREEN BAY 0 . . . At last . . . Homecoming is a roaring success as East Green Bay's Devils bow in first gridiron loss to Appleton's Blue and Orange 'ferrors since 1933 . . . Capacity crowd throngs Whiting Field and is rewarded with brilliant exhibition of high school football . . . Both teams play evenly matched contest . . . Five veteran Red Devil backs and husky corps of linemen can't faze the inspired Terrors . . . Appleton's injury list makes the outcome of this game even more amazing . . . Forbush, swollen knee, dislocated elbow, Sanders, torn ligament, Williams, broken foot, Schuh, wrenched shoulder, Bunks, torn neck vertebrae, Weinfurter, fractured nose, Brandt, trick knee . . . There were more, but who XVith crushing blocking, Forbush is on the way to a Terror score . . . Bates in the lead. cares, the final score is the payoff . . . A long touchdown drive marked by excellent fundamental football ends with Bates blasting over from the six yard line . . . East comes back with late game drive, but soph signal-caller Don Boya and other spirited reserves stop Heraly and company short of the goal line . . . Game ends in midfield stalemate . . . one to remember. APPLETON oeMANI'l'OWOC I4 . . . Well, it was great while it lasted . . . The saddest note in an otherwise satisfying season comes when inspired Manitowoc seniors roll over bruised and battle-weary Appleton boys . . . lt was never even close to a contest . . . Appleton line fails in the clutch and is outcharged and out fought . . . Little criticism is forthcoming, how- ever, for it is lVlanty's night, and they are a great team . . . Terrors threaten briefiy as senior Reed lforbush closes a brilliant career with long passes that ends fail to handle . . . Other seniors fight hard but results tell the story . . . lt's a long way home, but Appleton High shows spirit of true support as accolades of praise for a great season cheer up our humbled boys . . . Coach Ade Dillon showed intelligent foresight as eight underclassmen received letters and valuable experi- ence which should form the nucleus for a fine team next year. From the results of this fine '43-'44 season and the excellent prospects for '44-'45, it is easily seen that Appleton High School is well established as a dominant factor in Wisconsin prep football for many years to come. APPLETON 7-ST. lVIARY'S OF IVIENASHA I3 . . . This one we should forget . . . no choice in the matter . . . little St. Marys with an enrollment of 3oo, fields another great team . . . Zephyrs show too much rough and ready speed and precision for sud- denly sluggish Appleton squad . . . star end Ben Rosenthal is absent for this non-conference contest . . . Terrors really miss him, but some say the loss is due to overconfidence as Appleton has natural letdown with no conference standing at stake . . . Anyway, it isn't the same Blue and Orange Page zo outht that won in previous weeks . . . Appleton score is set up as lanky cnd Cliff Bunks pulls in a Forbush pass on the three yard line . . . Al Bates crashes to touchdown. . . Forbush splits the goalposts with educated toe . . . Zephyrs follow with long touchdown drive as Appleton over-relaxes . . . half ends 7-6 . . . Billy Schuh and sophomore tailback Roger Brandt leave game Q with second half injuries . . . Terrors fall apart . . . 'nuf said. APPLETON 13-CENTRAL SHEBOYGAN 7 . . . bunk-S Appleton High is relegated to a cold, foggy morning contest as Lawrence College takes over Whiting Field in the afternoon. . . the hefty Appleton line can take credit for this win as they outdid themselves in blocking kicks, a specialty of theirs during the whole season. . .jim Campbell, junior tackle. blocks one in the first period and recovers it himself. . . Blond Reed Forbush rifles a pass to Al Bates for 1 3 yards and then repeats to Bunks for a touchdown SAWQH .. . orchids to Mr. Forbushs passing arm ...A heavy cross-wind crosses up the point-after- touchdown . . . Terrors coast a little and She- boygan scraps over for a touchdown, con- verting to lead 7-6 . . . blocking kicks . '44 won Managers letter as rewards for their dependable service to the squad. Of the seniors. Cliff Bunks and Ben Rosenthal were sterling ends, Both excelled in pass catching and on defense. Don Manning and Cene Sawall operated at guards. Manning filling in admirably when Al Bates was shifted to fullback. and Sawall doing a consistently fine job all year. Bud lfalatick was a capable reserve center. Reed lforbush finished three years at tailback marked by clever running. fine passing and courageous de- fensive works, Bill Schuh played as a soph, dropped for a year. and returned to prove one of the squads most dependable men. Hard luck caught up with lfrank Sanders and Don Williams in their senior year, Both boys w ere veterans of two years experience. but lfrank ripped a leg ligament in the first week of practice and saw little action during the year. while Don. a husky quarterback. played four games and was then forced to the side- lines with a broken bone in his foot. Laurels for his spirit and all-around football ability must go to Duane HAI Bates, who took team scoring honors at fullback with zo points in five games. lfox Valley recognition went to several Appleton boys. Cliff Bunks was placed at end on the lfox River Valley all-conference team. and Al Bates and Reed lforbush received second team places. lforbush was also awarded the most valuable player of Appleton High honor by his teammates .... and that is the Tale of the Football Terrors. Under the understanding tutelage of Wallace Cole sweat and strain to gain the experience to take their places on the varsities of years to come . . . Wallys hard-working guidance brings out the best in some of these promising boys who should be a help to Ade Dillons varsity crew s. lfate of NB Squad football depends on transportation and the war. . . Best operators for the Colemen were Bruce Henning. Dick Kimball, john Brandes. . . These boys give hope of bigger and better things to come. . .
