NEW FRIENDS Disillusionment would be the only word to describe my reactions at A.E. with 1800 co-educational students, no dress code, diversity of subjects, and teachers minus graduation gowns. AE. was a great change from 750 single-sex students, prescribed uniform, basic subjects and gown-wearing teachers. Along with this, when one wakes up at 6:45 in order to go to school, something should be done with your education system. School in New Zealand begins at 9:20, and we have a 15 minute break in the morning, 1V3 hours for lunch, and leave school at 3:25. We don't have study halls or independ- ent study, much to my disappointment. The biggest problem I found was the winter in Wis- consin, or ttorture' as it was for me. When you come from a climate where you have never experienced temperatures below 30 degrees, a Wisconsin winter is somewhat of a new experience. When I left New Zea- land we had a bad winter'Z days of snow for a mas- sive total of 2 , and school was closed on the second day. As a conclusion, I'd like to say that this experience at A.E. is one I'll never forget, and the people at East, Appleton and the U.S.A. have surpassed my greatest expectations. A final word would be that I hope that next year's football team finds a better kicker than the hopeless clod they had this year. Kim McDonald Debbie Gunther was chosen from this area to go abroad this summer as an A.F.S. student. Kim McDonald, alias nN.Z. , was our A.F.S. student from New Zea- land. He stayed with the family of Mike Sullivan. At the left are N.Z.'s reactions to East, Appleton and the U.S.A. Mrs. Bauschek glances at the scoreboard as the seconds tick away at the A.F.S. faculty game. 67
