D [DICUlO N To those who hold Appalachian deep in their hearts, her life is a sacred trust; her honor, a breathing spirit: her being, an inviolate personality. From those who love Appalachian there is the deepest regard, the sincerest respect, for the men who have aided in her creation. For one man the depth of this gratitude, the sincerity of this respect, the concentration of this love is greatest: for he. with the other builders, has given his strength to her creation and his power to her preservation. This man is Doctor Graydon Poe Eggers. At a time when faith is easily lost and devotion to ideals easily forgotten. Dr. Eggers has come forward to give the full power of his character and ability to strengthen Appalachian ' s faith, to preserve her from disbelief and cynicism. To him all who love Appalachian are indebted for the preservation of all that makes Appalachian great: the democratic, the American spirit of learning and teaching. This man is a scholar, an exacting student in the finest sense of the word. He is a teacher — a teacher whose students have faith in the cultural, philosophical, and moral truth which he proposes because he himself is the embodiment of that truth This man is a friend— a friend who comforts with his sympathy and perfects with his truth. This man is an American: his is an American philosophy: his is an American religion: his. an American life. To DOCTOR GRAYDON POE EGGERS the senior class of Appalachian State Teachers College is proud to dedicate the 194 5 RHODODENDRON. Page Three
