E DlGATiON No ATTEMPT to revieic the recent progress of Appalachian would be complete icithout an effort to pay tribute to our most competent business manager. Mr. Barnard Dougherty. Rather than becoming the grim personality that a man who listens to the financial troubles of hundreds of others is apt to be. he has retained a cheerful disposition and a personal interest in all the students with whom he has come in contact. He always seems willing to listen to the troubles of any student, and to help him to the best of his ability, be he the lowliest freshman or the highest senior. Besides being imbued with the characteristics which make for a congenial personality, our business manager is at all times open-minded toward any project or activity which will open the way for the advancement and improvement of Appalachian. It therefore gives us a great deal of pleasure to dedicate, to you. Mr. Barnard. Few people fully appreciate the beauties of nature, especially those which are common experiences, made such by everyday associations. We. at Appalachian, are bountifully blessed with scenes, admired and praised by man since time immemorial, but we are prone to neglect recognizing them. For our theme we have selected scenes and activities found in our own western North Carolina depicting the manner in which nature in all her wonderful and varied forms derives her strength and beauty from the fundamental elements, fire, earth, water and air.
