FOREWORD The drama of yesterday, the glorious literature of the past is ours today. We laugh, cry, love, hate, connive, and disparage with the actors. Their lines are ours. Realizing the vastness of the dramatic field we considered it unwise to limit the scope to a particular author; rather, we have selected for our theme the most colorful dramatic period of each of five different countries; attempt- ing to depict for you something of the type characters, their cos- tumes and manners. In the later years of your life we feel that you will finger these pages in solemn retrospect, and view with inexorable pride your role on this campus. Then, and only then, will the fullest meaning of this milestone in your life be revealed. THE PAGEANT

DEDICATION To a man whose enthusiasm for teaching is so pronounced, whose influence on his fellows and students so infinite, and whose everlasting interests in the forwarding of Appalachian so great, is this, the sixteenth volume of The Rhododendron, dedicated.
