CyArHriOM The lot of administrator is no easy one. It is the good fortune of Appalachian to have Dr. J. D. Rankin as Dean. He has at all times the best interests of the school at heart. In dealing with stu- dent problems hts one guiding principle is the welfare of the student body as a whole and the welfare of the school. Capable, firm yet fair, strong yet reasonable, he sets an every- day example of right living. Because of a sincere admiration and respect for him as an administrator, as a teacher, and as a man. The 1936 RHODODEN- DRON is dedicated to Dean Rankin.

F ORELVTc » f - i- - muinc ' .««« Man thinks that he has reached a very complex stage in his development. We live in an age in which machines and chemicals do work that was once thought to be superhuman. Many things might be cited as evidence of our material culture of the present time. Stream-lined automobiles, aeroplanes, and railroad trains may be seen rushing through space. Surgery and disease control have come to be a vital part of our life today. Wonders of our indus- trial culture are the dynamo, the linotype machine, and the fast moving elevator. Wonders of our agencies of communication are the modern newspaper, the telephone, the radio, and the telegraph. It is important that we remember that none of them would be pos- sible at the present time if it were not for a few significant dis- coveries and inventions which were made by man in much earlier stages of his development. A few of these discoveries and inventions have been set forth as a theme for the 1936 Rhododendron.
