BOOK II CLASSES Development of a Written Language One of the epoch-making events in the civiliz- ing process of man has been the development of a written language. The spoken language is as old as man himself. It is so easily varied that many dialects and even a new language may develop from an original form in the absence of a written language. A written language makes possible uni- form and permanent records. Modern devices for writing and printing would never have been con- ceived and used without a written language. Our present systems of education and government would not be possible without a written language. Indeed, our whole economic, social, and political life is inseparably bound with written languages.
