Clvde R. Erwin State Snperintendoit of Education 1934 — 1935 The man who is waging a com- mendable fight to raise the living standard for teachers in North Caro- lina. (;t y- ;. FOREWORD J. T HAS been the aim this year to produce a hook that would portray campus life fully at Appalachian in all of its social, athletic, and scholastic aspects. We have attempted to record this year ' s experiences in this our RHODODENDRON, so that ivhen you are far removed from Appalachian State Teachers College you may turn to it and relive some of those happy days spent here. If books are truly companions, we believe that your Annual will be the most congenial. In accordance With the definite purpose of this institution, which is teacher training, we have adopted a theme portraying the life and work of a teacher. In our theme we have attempted to rehearse the role that a teacher m the public school assumes, the responsibilities they bear and the position they hold in society. The teacher — that meets his classes every day in the week and teaches Sunday School on Sunday, moulding the child mentally and physically, repri- manding, encouraging and advising — more influential, possibly than the min- ister and oftentimes more so than the parent upon the child ' s thinking and behavior — is herein depicted. c T-. zzy J- v »

Charles B. Aycock Goz ernor of North Carolina 1901 — 190S The man who fmiRht harder and did more for universal education than any other man in the history of North Carolina. • incieen DEDICATION T. O THAT Nestor of educational evanQcIists ivho lighted the fires of enthusiasm for mass education, ivho iVas the guiding genius behind the initi- ation and development of the present public school system in North Carolina. Governor Charles B. Aycock. and to the public school teachers of the stale, the 1935 Rhododendron is respectfully dedicated. North Carolina has produced no leader whose flaming zeal for univer-vil education was more effectual than that of Governor Aycock nor one whose influence for public schools was more far-reaching and accomplishing. When public interest in this cause was either unaroused or complacent . he rode his life out over mountains and coastal plains calling upon his commonwealth to give rightful concern to the social, moral, intellectual, and spiritual values of its uouthhood through the processes of public schools. He is North Carolina ' s Immortal. Catching the spirit of educational aspirations and sacrificial service which marked the career and achievement of this illustrious leader, the public .school teachers have wrought his best dreams into reality and today they stand apart from all other groups of our citizenship for the efficiency of their labors and for the splendor of their unselfishness during the period when public education, like other public services, was having its blood drawn on the altar of an enforced economy.
