Their work has placed Appalachian High School as one of the leading high schools in the state and we will forever oe MRS. MARGARET GRAGG Guidance Counselor be indebted to them. FAITH IN OUR FOR WE SHALL REFLECT OUR TEACHERS TEACHINGS IN EVERYTHING WE DO... FAITH IN OUR Scholuslijp FOR IT MUST SERVE US FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES The process ofa chemistry experiment, the basic pattern of life, must be perfected through a method of trial and error. Each trial must be founded on experience and knowledge. Each error must serve as a correction. Time and the skill derived from knowledge will bring each endeavor closer to man's ideal, the ultimate goal of per- fection. Good Sportsmanship is a key to success. It aids in building character and its presence makes a well-balanced individual. Being able to work in harmony with one's fellow man is a trait which must be developed. Learning to. lead, learning to receive and carry out orders, learning todo more than the minimum require- ments, always striving to do a more outstanding job than the previous one-these are the true as- pects to good sportsmanship. An outstanding athlete is lost without his teammates anda coachtoguidehim. With these assets however, he functions at his best. Only those who help themselves by helping their colleagues will find the road to success and self-respect a smooth one. FAITH IN OUR FOR WE MUST LEARN TO LIVE WITH THE WORLD Our school spirit promotions supplement the necessary goals of the well-rounded education needed for the future. AHS Takes Fourth State AA Crown The Blue Devils of Appalachian took their fourth consecutive Western AA title this season by storming through nine regular season games without a loss and then romping over Hilde- bran and Murphy in the playoffs. At the season's end the Devils were rated number 1 inthe state in class AA. After three early season victories by big margins, the Devils really showed signs of things to come when they shellacked arch-rival West Wilkes bythescore of 40-6. Taylors- ville, one of the major powers in class AAA, proved to be the sternest test to the Blue Devils all year. Appalachian rose to the occasion, however, and took a 25-7 decision. The Devils ran up their largest margin in several years when they downed Beaver Creek 53-0 in the regular season finale. In the District playoffs, Appalachian bombed Hildebran 46-14 and then ventured to Canton to take on the Murphy Bulldogs for the fourth year ina row. In what was predicted to be a tight game, the Devils turned it into a thorough rout and went on to win by the deci- sive margin of 39-7. 30 FOOTBALL COACHES, Bill Gregg, Jim Campbell, J. H. Harvey, and head coach Jack Groce, have helped our Blue Devils through another undefeated season, averaging 40 points a game. We are all deeply indebted to them for their hard work, patience, and skill in handling young athletes. FOOTBALL MANAGERS, Dean Miller and Johnny Cooke, by working faithfully and diligently, have kept the Blue Devils geared and on the playing field. MR. JACK GROCE 3) Head Coach OUR SENIOR LINEMEN TOMMY BARNES BILL BINGHAM LARRY ATWELL eT ee JIMMY COTTRELL BARTLETT DOUGHERTY JOE EDMISTEN STEVE HAMILTON BILL PRESNELL Appalachian High Blue Devils OUR SENIOR BACKS TOMMY TAYLOR ROBERT MATHESON In the playoff game for the District 7 AA championship, the Blue Devils met the Hildebran Royals in Boone. During the first half of the game, Appalachian found its offensive thrusts being withstood by the stubborn Hildebran defense. The Devils worked hard for two first half touchdowns and yielded a touchdown to Hildebran late in the first half. This was the only time of the entire season that the Blue Devils did not carry at least atwelve point lead into the second half of play. The Devils rebounded strong however and SCORE SHEET 42 Surry Central 0 41 Ashe Central 0 49 Mount Airy 13 40 West Wilkes 6 33 Dallas 0 45 North Surry 0 27 Elkin 0 25 Taylorsville 7 53 Beaver Creek 0 46 Hildebran 14 39 Murphy 7 Bob Matheson bowls over would be tacklers for a big gain against Hildebran. The superior Appalachian line must be given credit for a game well played. During the time when the offense was not moving the ball, the line had to be counted on to repeal the offensive attempts of the Royals. Despite having the game already won, the Devils wouldn't let up until they had walloped the opposition, 46-14. La RONNIE SMITH BOYCE BROWN Have Undefeated Season RONNIE HUNT PHIL HAMPTON CHUCK BLANTON In the only afternoon game of the season, the Devils played in front of the student body and proceeded to swamp the Beaver Creek Beavers, 53-0. This was the highest score ran up by any Appalachian team in recent years. With the third term playing most of the afternoon, the Devils completely overpowered the helpless Beavers. In the photo, Bobby Wilson is shown carrying the ball after receiving a pass from Tommy Taylor. Wayne Clawson trails the play. BOB WILSON WAYNE CLAWSON — ALTON JOHNSON SYDNEY YOUNG FLOYD GREENE On Friday night, October 26, the Blue Devils played host to the Bears from Tay- lorsville. Appalachian, despite a distinct weight deficit, battered down the enormous Taylorsville line with their aggressiveness and versatility. With Phil Hampton and Robert Matheson leading the onslaught, the Devils scored two early touchdowns and held a 12-0 halftime advantage. Appalachian had scored twice more before the Bears finally pushed across a tally late inthe final quarter to make the final score 25-7. The senior linemen of the 1962 team are to be lauded for: their excellent performance despite being smaller than the opposing line in almost every contest. A prime example of this weight disadvantage was displayedin the game against Taylorsville. In that game, the Taylorsville linemen outweighed the Devils by some 40 pounds perman. Graduating linemen are, Joe Edmisten, Tommy Barnes, Larry Atwell, Billy Joe Presnell, Steve Hamilton, Jimmy Cottrell, Bill Bingham, and Bartlett Dougherty. Ronnie Smith picks up yardage through a large hole in the Taylorsville line. Others are Billy Joe Presnell (70) Buddy Storie (64) Joe Edmisten (fore- ground) Robert Matheson (46) and Jimmy Cottrell (50). The Blue Devils will be losing one of the best aggregation of backs ever at Appa- lachian. Graduating seniors are Tommy Taylor, Robert Matheson, Ronnie Smith, and Boyce Brown. The pinpoint passing of Tommy, the bull like rushes of Robert, the shifty open field running of Ronnie, and the aggressiveness and sure-tackling of Boyce will be a great loss to next years squad of Blue Devils. GARY BROWN BUDDY STORIE 35 In the picture at the right, Robert Matheson plunges throughthe Taylorsville line to pick up much needed yardage. Seniors. . .The Class of '63. . .after twelve long years of work and toil. It seems impossible that twelve short years ago we entered grammar school awed andperhaps a little fright- ened. We came through grammar school, however, with not much trouble. To be young and ignorant is surely bliss. But, the scene changed in '59 when the future class of '63 entered the halls of Ap- palachian High for the first time. Our subjects became harder and we had more to do with each passing year. As Freshmen we were probably the greenest ever to clamor through the halls. Wejoined clubs, made new friends and found there was evenaplaceforus at AHS. The Steering Committee that happy year was: President, Baker Edmisten; Vice President, Robert Mathe- son; Secretary and Treasurer, Ronnie F. Smith; and Reporter, Steve Hamilton. Marsha Parker was Miss Freshman. Sophomores! We had advanced one more rung up the ladder marked ''Education. Our Sophomore year was filled with French, AlgebralIl, and Biology. Boy, what brains we were. Ala Sue McGuire was Miss Sophomore. Baker Edmisten, Ala Sue McGuire, Ronnie Smith, and Robert Matheson served us well as class officers. Our Junior year was one of the best to go down in history--the thrill of being upperclassmen at last, and the thoughts of being the Big Wheels next year. Our class worked together for a beautiful Junior-Senior Prom. ''Gay Paree'' was the theme, and in the end we felt it was an event worthy of the Seniors. Donna Breitenstein was Miss Junior ! and Polly Clawson and Baker Edmisten were ''Class Favorites.'' The officers were Baker Edmisten, Robert Matheson, and Ronnie Smith. Seniors? Yes, we finally made it. The year began with us awed with the thoughts of being the hub that turned the wheel, playing the leading role on the stage of Appalachian High for one whole year. It was fun being looked up to by the other students even though we didn't feel we deserved this honor at first. Our class officers were Robert Matheson, President; Ronnie Smith, Vice President; Polly Clawson, Secretary-Treasurer; and Joe Todd, Reporter. Baker Edmisten, who was elected the previous year, served us wellas President of the Student Body. Ala Sue McGuire was ''Miss Senior ’ and Barbara Yoder and Robert Matheson were ''Class Fa- vorites. ’ Bill Bingham, Editor, and Ala Sue McGuire, Business Man- ager, of the 1963 Laurelworked diligently tomake our yearbook the best-ever. The day finally came that we received our class rings. Everyone was proud of his. After our wonderful Christmas holiday came the semester exams; then the election of Senior Superlatives. Baker Edmisten was ''Mr. Appalachian and Polly Clawson, Miss Appalach- ian.’ Our Senior Sponsors were Mr. VerlinCoffey, Miss Doris Jones, and Miss Elizabeth Elliott. We were then in a mad rush for graduation practice, final exams and the last treasured days of a wonderful life at AHS. These have been happy, carefree years full of fun, frolic and; yes, even a little work. --Nancy Lookabill 105 r F Class Historian CLASS DIRECTORY ADAMS, CLARITA. Transfer from Mercy High School.
