THE 1973 ACCOLADE Appalachia High School Appalachia, Virginia Editor: Marlene Swiney Business Manager: Debbie Rutherford 1972-73 ... A Year of Changes The school year 1972-73 brought many changes to Appalachia High School. The grading sys¬ tem was changed from numerical grading to letter grading. The passing mark was lowered from 75 to 70. The year saw our football coach, Mr. James Riggs, announce his retirement, so that he might devote more time to his new job as assistant principal. The year 1973 also saw the end of the longest war in America ' s history, the Vietnam War. In order to keep up with the changing times at A.H.S., we, the Accolade Staff, felt that we should also make a change. As you will see in the following pages, we have employed a new format. This new format is designed to give a more life-like portrayal of the past year. We hope that you share our enthusiasm in this new method. Thank you. Accolade Staff of 1973 Dedication How do we honor thee? Let us count the ways. You are an inspiring and intelligent classroom teacher; you make the dullest textbook pages vibrant and alluring. In the school and outside the classroom, too, there is hardly an activity that has not felt your touch and profited from your wit and wisdom - many class plays, faculty under¬ takings, organization of the Beta Club, forensic activ¬ ities, and many others. For all you are, have been, and ever will be to us, we, the Accolade Staff, sincerely dedicate this, the 1973 Accolade to you, Mrs. Grace K. Murphy. 3 Students and Teachers 33 Funny names and funny faces are seen in public. The students and the teach¬ ers have assigned parking areas. Dynamite walks to school to keep in shape.
