JUST STAPFISH ON THE BEACH Yesterday, when I got homefrom school, my mother asked me to go to-the store for her. All I could think of was how much I didn't want to go. I wanted to go over to a friend's house. I tried to get out of going. No use. I dropped my hooks on the tahle, wicked un my keys and reached for 'ine list. Honey, nick uo your hooks and put'em in your room. Don't make the kitchen messier than it is,N called my mom. ' I A A 'i DarnI I putdown keys and took my books to my 'room.' NI can't wait till I'm out of here.H I thought moodily. I retrieved my keys, and off I went. 1 The car radio was tuned to the crurmly country station y that my parents like. How can they listen to that jLH'lK?i' iI wondered. I switched it to my favorite' rock stationf The D.J. was doing a shampoo commercial. I tuned, it out. I thoupjot, about my hcyiiiend. We had a date that night. HI really like him, I thoaeght, He's easy to he with . The commerciallwas over and a song came on. - nGoodhye my friend, its hard to die when all the. birds are singing in the sky, - A sang the singer. I turned on 'hlirzker md changed lanes. Somethmg caught my eye. I looked over to the side of' the road. There was an old woman. She looked about a hundred, but a more realistic gU,LlGSS'A'WOll1C1 prohahly he 70. .She was wearing a weathered brown dress and the black orthooedic shoes of the kind' so many old women wear. It was chilly out, and she were a red sweater that had seen a few too many washings. . Herhair was tied in a hun at the hack of' her head. WA few of' the strands of her white hair had escaped and hmg don-m loosely across her face. She had just been to the market, for she was pulling a two wheeled wire cart that contained a hog of groceries. As I passed, I looked into her eyes. They, were sad. Dulled with fa.tiygue and loneliness. I wanted to stop and pick her up. To tell her I loved her, and she was heautif'ul and take her anywhere she was going. But I cftdhft. '
