tgfzc 1939 Szzzmnff if -wg! HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF l939 One night I had a strange dream, a dream which pictured to me the class history of a model high school senior class, and strangely enough, the members of that class resembled the members of the class of '39 at Apex High School. When the curtain of sleep was drawn aside to reveal the picture, I saw a combination of students from Apex, Fairview, and West Wake, frightened by the mysteries of high school. They were showered by Algebra, English, Civics, and other subjects unfamiliar to them. It was not long before the sun shone again and I saw the students in the class rooms, under the general direction of Mr. Gibson. Miss Briggs and Miss Newton were unraveling the puzzles of Algebra, Mr, Stevens was lecturing on Civics, Miss Briggs and Mr. Woodward were teaching English, Miss Honeycutt was peeling off phrases of Latin to stupefled students, and Mr. Triplett and Miss Maness were training future farmers and their wives. Near the end of the scene a very different feeling prevailed in the students' minds. for they realized that happiness may be derived from high school. A temporary curtain was drawn upon the scene, closing the introduction to high school, Upon the rising of the curtain for the second scene, I dreamed of many outstanding students showing promise of future scholars, teachers, orators. athletes, lawyers, ministers, and leaders. The new classes did not seem so bad in this scene. Miss Cowing joined the faculty to make Biology and French more interesting for the students. Miss Thompson took on the responsibility of teaching English, and Mrs. Triplett the responsibility of Home Economics. With the com- pletion of this year's work, the students were very glad to receive the title of Juniors for the third scene. Among all the activities of the third scene, most outstanding was a dream of the lovely Irish banquet, at which the Juniors were hosts to their upperclassmen. All members of the class had become outstanding in all iields of school life, including scholarship, leadership of the class and student body, athletics, and club work, which held possibilities for debaters, nurses, dramatists, journalists, athletes, farmers, house wives, and scholars. Miss Cameron introduced business life to business-minded students, and those of a political nature were led in campaigns by Mr. Gibson. The end of the scene depicted the students ushering out the seniors of '38 to make room for themselves. And then the nnal scene began to unroll. I saw students present in Miss Cowing's home room who had not been in the original group, and a few of that group were missing. Many activities were going on. The students started to work on the SUMMIT and the school paper, athletics, and club work. Miss Benton, Mr. Brownie, Miss Crawley, and Miss Cunningham joined the high school faculty, which was ably guided by our new principal, Mr. Hough. The seniors kept their scholarship on the highest possible level. Never has there been a class to graduate from Apex High School with greater abilities or possibilities for success than has the class of '39. My dream ended and I slept. Now that dream has been fulfilled. We shall remember our high school days as a beautiful dream, one never to be forgotten, and we shall make our lives entirely the same way. We know there will be heartbreaks and disappointments. and everything will not be pleasant, but we are going to forget these things and remember that there are silver clouds just beyond the black ones if we will only look for them. We can continue to live our lives of dreams by keeping our class motto ever before us, Look not thou down, but up. Page Twelve Cfqpev H1213 fl School '- it
