sEQuoiA HONORS Jeannette Tulumello Mrs. Tulumello is a very unique part of Antioch High SchooI's history. She has taught for over half of A.C.H.S.'s existence. Besides her thirty one years at Antioch, she has taught all eight grades in Gillman, Illinois and high school in Modesto, Illinois. Teaching is hereditary to Mrs. Tulumello: there were seven teachers in her family. Teaching is practically the only career she was exposed to. Her reward in teaching is the sense of accomplishment she receives from helping students and developing student friendships that last for many years beyond the classroom. Although Mrs. Tulumello has traveled throughout the United States. she found Illinois to be most attractive. The Antioch area is .especially good because is has the atmosphere of a small town and the friendliness of the people, both of which are important criteria for her. Since Mrs. Tulumello has been here longer than any other teacher or employee, she is probably the best person to answer the question Has the student body changed? She feels the student body has definitely changed. The students receive much more freedom than they used to have. Once the students receive too much freedom they become disre- spectful and very hard to handle. Striving for a teaching degree is a very rough taskg the colleges and universities you attend are a very important factor in helping you receive a good position. Mrs. Tulumello received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Illinois State University and two masters degrees from the University of Illinois. She also did post-graduate work at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. To teachers, time is a most valuable commodity. Since retirement leaves one with a great deal of time, Mrs. Tulumello plans to fill this extra time with her hobbies such as, rug making, crocheting, and designing miniature novelities from all over the United States. Traveling and working on com- munity projects are also high on her priority list, Emory Chandler After more than 30 years of teaching, Mr. Chandler will retire from high school teaching this year. His teaching career began in southern Illinois where he taught English and history and coached football,-basketball, track and baseball. After teaching in Missouri, he heard of openings in Antioch and Aurora. He was offered a position in Aurora, but took the one at Antioch High School before the Aurora Board of Education met to accept him. Mr. Chandler chose a teaching career because he enjoys literature and writing. And even though his secret ambition is to be a writer, he has always thoroughly enjoyed teaching. The most rewarding aspect of his work is teaching students writing style through more varied sentences and knowl- edge of sentence structure. Mr. Chandler received a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University and a masters degree from Western Illinois University. He also did graduate work at Washington University of St. Louis. At the end of this year, Mr. Chandler expects to spend a lot of time on each of his hobbies, which are reading, writing, and playing golf. In between all of his hobbies, he plans to continue teaching at Jefferson College in Missouri where he has been offered a job inthe community where he once taught. Or, he may stay here and work part time for the News-Sun. Another alternative is to stay in the area to teach in a junior college. Where he and his wife want to settle is not definite. There are times when building a house on their lot in the Missouri Ozarks sounds like the best idea of all for retirement.
