Our old library steps, the well-trod hall of Old Central, the student lawn, and the hard, but comfortable wooden chairs in the auditorium are being forgotten much too soon. Many students remember the AV of old, the transi- tion period, and the new look. Once there was a feeling of despair as the old buildings were being demolished, the lawns being transformed into con- r . 2 1 J J crete, and our beautiful trees falling to the ground. Now, we are engrossed with plans and hope for regeneration. We are in the midst of establishing a new situation with the same traditions and spirit that existed before. We know now that our per- severence was not useless. Today we have one of the most beautiful campuses in the state of Cali- fornia and the students as well as administration and faculty can indeed be proud. 3 As TEACHER and COUNSELOR, that extra mile' os LEADER, you made following worthwhile.- as FRIEND, the cheerfulness and rcody smile things we shall remember. To you, Mr. Loewcn, we dedicate the YUCCA of I960. these w Mr. Loewen, born in Olsen, North Dakota, has been a teacher at A.V. for the past eight years. Prior to this he resided in Salem, Oregon, where he attended the Bachelor Willamette University and received his Master's Degree. Abe enjoys council psychology, but his first love is teaching. His favorite delicacy is chicken and his hobby is swimming. Last, but not least, his pet peeve is students talking in class, yet his friendship and hospitality have been warm and vibrant. It is with heartfelt gratitude and sincere prayers for continued success that we dedicate this 1960 Yucca to you, Mr. Abe A. Loewen. Under the expert leadership of the president, Mr. McNamee, the Board has solved this and other problems with efficiency. Working long hours with little recognition, it is time we thank the Board of Trustees for their help in the function of our school. GUS P. ELIOPULOS ROY J. SIMI GEORGE F. One senator and alternate were chosen from each of the American History classes. They served as representatives of their class for the entire year. Jimmy Cox, first semester President, ably led both the Senate and his class. Mae Cruz served as his ' right-hand man in the position of Vice-President, while Ann Barton handled the finances. Trudy Schuman kept a record of the activities of the Senate for our own use, while Kathy Brown reported our progress to the class. u 66 JIMMY COX President JIMMY COX Vice President H StISItR OfFICEflS New officers were elected to take over the ad- ministrative duties of the Junior Senate for the second semester. John Brownwood took over the head spot as President, while Jimmy Cox, former president, moved down to the Vice-Presi- dency. Together they really swung the Senate into action. Since most of the activities that were planned during the first semester were scheduled for the second semester, the Junior Class was quite busy during the last half of the year. Trudy Schuman continued as Secretary, while Shirley Newman was elected as Treasurer, and Gailand Burdette took over as Reporter. 67 JOHN BROWNWOOD President 1 J _ Tom Andrews Vicki Anderson Dole Baker All the Junior senators wore their 'Dogooteh' outfits the doy of the Sado Howkms dance Jim Baker Lorraine Barstow Phil Baird Sandro Baines June Atkin Jim Borth Tom Baumgardner Ann Barton Cothrine Barstow Ron Bcckemcycr Morianne Batchelor 68 D Roger Bcllefcuillc Lillian Borns Norman Bender Gwen Beckmeycr Boyd Bennett Kathy Behnke and John Brownwood. It has been a busy, but ver wonderful year. With the status of upperclassmen comes many responsibilities, as well as privileges. W are now at that station of life which forces a sense o consciousness and reality upon us. We start to conside what lies ahead, and begin to make plans and dream; Although we have our heads in the clouds, our feet ar planted firmly on the ground. As the fall semester gc underway, our senate and officers were elected, an plans were made for the first Junior-sponsored ever of the year. This was the victory dance after the Oxnar football game. The cafeteria was packed but we hel to the theory the more the merrier, and everyon had a fabulous time. A little later we originated the fir; Talent Assembly, which was a contribution of our class t the entire student body. Since it was such a huge succes it was decided to establish the assembly as a traditio at A.V. February 14th came and we undertook the ar nual Junior project of of operating a Valentine telegrar 70 John Brownwood service. The messengers, identified by outfits of red and white and with a large red heart as a badge, de- livered the telegrams along with chocolate candy kisses to sweethearts all over the campus. On St. Patrick's Day we held an always popular and profitable Sucker Sale. The money realized was put towards the Prom. The Sadie Hawkins Dance is another annual Junior proj- ect. The Senators wore their crazy outfits during the day to advertise the dance. All the girls looked for short boys to take since v e had to pay by their height. On Junior Day, April 29th, we had an assembly in which some of our talented Juniors performed. The year cul- minated with the biggest event yet; the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme v as Orientale. As the couples drifted by the Moongate and then past the gold Buddah they were transported to the Far East for an evening filled Oriental flavor. The Juniors have had much to be proud of during this year, and we are looking forward with anticipation to being Seniors. Young. step upon foreign ground without the consistency of a leading hand will be a situation of realizing that we are completely responsible for ourselves. The feeling of a democratic way of life has lived with us,- but we haven’t, until now, fully realized who will be the leaders in the future society. We have directed our way to the American way of life so 'hot n future we will have the complete responsio : tv o: our country’s welfare. The Student Government, comprised of the Board of Control and Student Senate, together with Mr. Held, Mr. Tosi and Mr. Rittenhouse, Advisors, worked throughout the year with the student body for the betterment of the school. During the first semester, the Board of Control purchased the long await- ed juke-box, which was placed in the cafeteria for entertainment dur- ing the lunch hours and school dances. Other first semester addi- tions included three candy machines which were installed in the lobby of the Activities Office in the Wallace Ward Building. HUGH BIKIE Fust Semester Student Body President D f f The most outstanding and popular act of this year s Board of Control was the recommendation to the Ad- ministration which resulted in the lengthening of the lunch hours. The 2nd Semester Officers initiated the policy of dancing in the cafeteria during lunch hours and before and after school. The Board of Control holds a regular meeting each Tuesday morning in the Student Government Room, with Mr. Jack Held, Advisor. Decisions reached at this meeting have direct effect on the entire Student Body, therefore it is only proper to say that Student Government is truly the heart of student life. Bonnie was chosen last year to serve as A. V. High's mascot. It has been Annie's” job to promote spirit and encourage good sportsmanship on our campus. She was seen doing her job at the football and basketball games, with Antelope Bell and Whip in hand. Annie played a big part in our pep rallies and assemblies with a smile and a wink of those long eyelashes. Working with Annie” this year were the Yell Leaders and Song Leaders. 157 II If I u Dozzling smile. Princess Carolyn At 8:00 P.M. on Friday, Novem- ber 20, as a climax to the day's Homecoming Activities, the foot- ball team presented their choice of the three loveliest senior girls. While everyone waited in hushed silence the princesses were escorted into the center of the football field where Julie Lovio was crowned queen by Co- Captain Larry McKibban. Caro- lyn Lawrence was crowned by Co-Captain Chuck Barnes and Barbara Gibson was crowned by A.S.B. President Hugh Bikle. Queen Julie's sparkling person- ality makes her popular not only with the football team but with the entire student body as well. Sitting pretty. Moving to Lancaster from Santa Paula early in her junior year she soon became well-known and liked, and in May she be- came a Junior-Senior Prom prin- cess. She is currently an active member of Student Senate and various other clubs. Princess Carolyn is seldom seen without a smile on her face. She is very active in school af- fairs being a Varsity Cheer- leader and Merit Board Presi- dent this year. Princess Barbara's sweetness and sincerity are felt by every- one who knows her. She is cur- rently an active member of G.A.A. and Student Senate. Vivacious brunette. The mood was staged amid glittering stars and shimmering snowflakes. Enchanted couples danced to the music of the Melody Men. All the excitement and glamor of the holiday season was truly captured in this gala event. The crowning of the King, Al Dye,- and Queen, Francoise Thibault, highlighted the evening with all its splendor. They were attended by their royal court: Micki Lewis and Victor Yedid; Carolyn Lawrence and Mike Miles; Brenda Evans and Larry McKibban; Penny Bunyard and Dave Rumpf. pins Bill onvf 161 The agical day arrived! PHIHCESS CHI lllllt On Saturday, May 21, the Cadet Corps of Lancaster sponsored the 1959-60 Military Ball with the Cadets and Royalty from Palm- dale and Mojave as honored guests. At 10:00 P.M. beautiful Pat Heike was crowned as A.V.'s Military Queen. The lovely prin- cesses in her court, Pat Atwood, Carolyn Lawrence, Micki Lewis, Shirley Rake, and Donna Vaughn were escorted by the Commis- sioned Officers of the Cadet Corps. Following the crowning of A.V.'s queen, Palmdale and Mojave crowned their queens and the three girls vied for the honor of Military Ball Queen. Chosen was our queen, Pat Heike. We had first to prove our physical ability to experience the extent of our mental ability. A physical ability recognizes an individual in the eyes of the majority, but really he becomes the conspicuous figure when he can show the ability to involve rivalry and gracefully accept the results. No other sport in Antelope Valley, or even in the entire United States, can possibly claim to approach the phenomenal growth both in popularity and in quality which Gymnastics has undergone during the past four years. This is certainly true at our school, for, in April, 1958, after 10 years of sparse winning by the former gymnastic teams, our varsity squad, under the ex- cellent coaching of Jerry Murnane, began a no-loss record which has lasted 2’ 2 years thus far with no end in sight. These victories were due to the intensified training and many sacrifices made by the members of the Gymnastic team. They worked out with one thought in mind, winning a C.I.F. championship for Antelope Valley, and this they accomplished. The high point men for the 1960 season were Rick Henry and Gary Buckner, each one totaling well over 100 points for 8 meets. Rick Henry holds the individual scoring record for 1 meet totaling 24 points out of a possible 25 against a meet with San Fernando. On April 1st, 1960, Russell Mills, Antelope Valley's greatest side horse man, placed 3rd in the Metro- politan A.A.U. Gymnastic meet, which is the 2nd largest meet in California. From here Russell went on to win first place in California AAU and fourth place in the national AAU. This is the highest honor ever awarded to a high school gymnast. This June, the major porfior of Coach Murnane's Gymnastic Team will graduate. It is the wish of each graduating gymnast that the remaining team members uphold the winning tradition set by them in the past 2 Vj years.
