We wish you luck, Maria) These student are omong the many friends Maria has made during her year at our school. 5 IN MEMORIAM Mr. Richard, a man always with a friendly smile and greeting for everyone. On the side of the students, helping and advising whenever necessary. Even the students who had never known Mr. Richard, the teacher, knew and admired Mr. Richard, the man. We know that all the students he came in contact with will be left with his memory for a long time to come because a little bit of his shining personality rubbed off on everyone who knew him. Vernon Benson ... June 29, 1943—March 13, 1959 Vernon Benson was a boy who was liked by everyone who knew him. He always seemed to have a kind word for each person he passed in the halls of A.V. Though a light has gone out of our lives, his radiance shall re- main in our hearts forever. God take care of Vernon Benson and boys like him. Pho'ogroph courtoty Stubbing! Another is that extra ounce of push which can mean so much to so many of us. Through the combined efforts of our faculty and our never failing counselors we were brought through the 1959 school year with flying colors. The students realize this effort and would like to thank each and every teacher and counselor. The long-awaited joy of owning a Junior Class ring came to the Juniors at the beginning of the year. They ex- perimented with a sucker sale as a means of making money. The sale was so successful that it was followed by another in the spring. The sending of telegrams allowed many to express their feelings toward fellow students, and in many cases they created laughter. The follow- ing night, February 14, the Juniors sponsored a Valentine Dance, which was very decorative. An assembly was held during seventh period, presenting the Junior Class Officers of the first and second semesters, the Student Body Offi- cers-elect for the school year of 1959-1960, along with a couple of humorous skits put on by a couple of brave Junior girls. ESHMEN CL A OFFICERS The Freshman class started off their beginning year by being welcomed by the AVites. At first they were shy and quiet, but as time marched on they became a class known for their undying enthusiasm and overwhelming spirit. Their first assembly is one they will never forget, it was the first oc- casion for the group to participate as a whole. Other activi- ties include a candy sale to build up their treasury, an after game dance and they sold cold drinks in the merry month of April. Their biggest event was Freshman Day which was held after school at the local skating rink. A good time was had by all. 102 Board of Control, Row 1, Loft to right: J. Chereschov. S. Commins, D. PRESIDENT One of A.V.'s highest accomplishments is having one of its own AVites be S.B.V.I.S.C. President-elect. For two consecutive years A.V. h'as been proud to have an AVite elected to this position of high rank and honor. The San- ta Barbara Ventura Inter-School Council is composed of 16 senior high schools, in which the problems of the schools are thoroughly discussed. Along with his many duties as S.B.V.I.S.C. President, Dick was the Drum Major for the A.V. Band, he served on the Board of Control as Parliamentarian, held mem- berships in Student Senate, Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and a Life Membership in CSF and somehow managed to carry a straight A average in his studies. DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AWARD DIANNE THOMPSON D.A.R. AWARD WINNER The Daughters of the American Revolution Award is the highest honor that can be awarded to any senior girl. The selection for D.A.R. was done by a process of elimi- nation by students and faculty. More than deserving of this award Dianne was selected on her ability as a lead- er as well as her scholastic abilities. She has been serv- ing for two semesters as our Student Body Secretary, Board of Control Member, Student Senate Member, Z Club member and Y.C.C. Vice-President. Dianne's straight A average has made her one of the honorable few who ever gain life membership in the California Schol- arship Federation. 117 STUDENT SENATE Row 1, left to right: C. Role, J. Co . Representatives from each first period class meet to discuss many campus problems and bring them to the attention of the students they represent and the Board of Control. The Student Senate can always be looked to for active participation in campus projects as clean-up cam- paigns , Student Body donations toward community programs, and a suggestion box for school improvement. This years yearbook is, we believe, living up to the expectations of all AVites. We were led in our efforts by Mr. Ralph Nybakken, Advisor and Carol Rake, Editor-in-Chief. When a student signs up for the Yucca Staff, a lot of work comes along with a lot of fun. But as usual, the staff was made up of students who were willing to put in long hours during school, and some dur- ing vacation time to get our book out on time. MR. Outstanding Freshman Girl, JEANETTE SIMPSON, can really be proud at being chosen for this title. The main interests for her were the F.H.A. and G.A.A. memberships. She was chosen for this honor on a basis of schol- arship, attitude, and ability, and personality as they will truly benefit her in her future years here at A.V.
