V. has been one filled with progress and advancement con- cerning the beautifying of our campus and spreading of school spirit. The person behind it has been our principal, Mr. John Landrum, to whom this book is dedicated. Due to his wise counsel and planning for the future, our school is improving greatly; as we are sure it will continue to do. For his many years of service to our school, we of the Yucca staff express what we know are the feelings of the combined student body in saying that we appreciate his working for us, and solving numerous problems with a smile and determination. To a very fine person, we say thank you. Mr. landrum looking over the record of one of his students. 5 We see Mr. landrum going through the halls in his amiable way. Dr. Knapp directs, administers, and supervises all divisions and units of the school system with authority to delegate as may be appropriate. Having spent more than two decades at A. We owe many things to Dr. Knapp, namely his responsibility towards the maintenance of Antelope Valley High, which is rated very high- ly in Southern California, and contending with the ever expanding enrollment which we cope with each year. And, during their exciting (but embarrassing) slave days it was not rare seeing boys wearing lipstick and ribbons and girls carrying the boys' books for them. The Bunny Hop before Easter vacation showed origi- nality with the large bunny at the door and decorations of pink, white, green and yellow. The biggest activity sponsored by the Sophomores was the carnival, Tropical Island which was held between the swimming pool and the new girls' gym. To the melody of soft Hawaiian music food was sold, games were played, and a gen- erally good time was had by all. The officers during the second semester were very enthusiastic. This club is an extra curricular one and all girls who participate do so freely and put forth their best abilities. A few of this year's achievements are: The An- nual Family night and Initiation Dinner, at which approximately 200 people were present. The din- ner was entirely made and served by the girls. Mrs. Adams gave a talk and LaWayne Sutterfield, F.F.A. President, also did. Judy Jones was crowned Miss F.H.A. at the annual F.F.A.-F.H.A. dance held on March 1 at the Agricultural Building. The Spring Fashion show held on March 28 was a huge success. This year's theme was Fashior Fantasies and all home economic students par- ticipated. This year with Janet Dwyer as president of the Kappa Legga Bootz and Judy Stout as vice president. It was heard the girls had a rip-roaring time. The day of initiation was quite a riot. The girls being initiated wore angel costumes and also were not allowed to wear make-up or curl their hair. The initiating majorettes also helped the matter by making them eat garlic, onions and limburger. I think the general plea of the students at A. V. was Please don't come near me. MAJORETTES — Loft to right: Jody Stout, Diane Williorm, Janet Dwyer. Lynn Hall, Claire Ca oy, Diano Demor , and Nancy Mcrtz. 137 Under the leadership of Gary Green, assembly man- ager, many entertaining and educational assemblies were presented at Antelope Valley High. From left to right ore: Joyce Jenne, Karen Hair and Chris Barden. Some of the most outstanding were the Christmas program presented by the music department and one- act plays given by the drama department. These two snake authorities presented a National Assembly on October 16, in which they discussed the different types of snakes and their habits. Many good plays were presented this year at A. V. To start off the year an evening of one-act plays were presented under the direction of Miss Muriel McDaniel on November 21. They were: “Beware the Bear, about a girls' camp and an escaped convict; Sparkin, a hillbilly romance; Afterwards, a teenage love story with a new twist; If Girls Asked Boys for Dates, a teenage comedy. A Christmas play, directed by Mr. Thompson, was written entirely by English students about what would happen if Jesus were born in modern times. Fog on the Valley was the play A. V. entered in the one-act play tournament at the Pasadena Playhouse. Of course the biggest production this year was the spring play Our Town. Sue Nash and Lynn Donaldson had the leads. Sharon Rudiscll dances with her wind-op doll, Molly Puterbaugh in a skit presented with the Christmas play. Jodith Carson [Noda Laposso) shows Norrie a picture of his real mother in a touching Volley. her stepson, from Fog on the This is o scene from the Christmos play. The most popular outfits seemed to be the sweaters and skirts dyed-to-match with sap- phire blue and various shades of green predomi- nating. Red was also a favorite color which was seen in skirts and sweaters, especially the bulky knit sweaters. The sweaters came in new and different styles, most of them having three- quarter length sleeves with collars and buttons to add the decorative touch. AV COUPLE Here’s a cute AV couple. Carolyn Lawrence is wearing o turquoise cardigan sweater, black skirt and black shoes. Tom Lite wearing a red and black ivy-league shirt, white ivy-league slacks ond white bucks, checks his watch to be suro thot they aren't late for class. MEETING ON FRONT LAWN A common sight is everyone meeting on the front lawn ofter school. Donna Hammon, wearing her stylish beige poplin car coat, and ivy-league shoes meets Fred Rcnfroc, wearing ton ivy-league slacks, tan jacket and white loofers. IN BETWEEN CLASSES Carol Stewart is modeling a green full skirt, and green and white striped blouse. This outfit is accented with a black leother belt and black T” strops shoes. She is talking to Sharna Higgins who is wearing a red cotton pique empire waist sheath. Shirts with button-down collars and ivy- league pants were on the top of the list with the boys. They also wore some cleverly styled sweaters which included the sweater shirt and the ever popular V neck sweater. A collegiate look came to A.V. in heavy wool sweaters and pleated plaid skirts and in the trim and tailored ivy-league fashions. A fad started by some of the girls in connection with this trend was wearing knee-socks with pleated or straight skirts. STUDIOUS STUDENTS Still very interested in their lost doss, Vicki Clements and Dennis Moses folk things over. Vicki showing off her charcoal jumper, her pretty red bulky-knit sweater and red shoes. Dennis is wearing levis, red V neck sweater, and white bucks. CLEANING OUT THEIR LOCKERS Carol Miller, wearing a mist green skirt and matching sweoter, helps Linda Mullet deon out her locker. The donee wo sponsored by the senior class and wos enjoyed by the many Alumni and high school students attending. A.V. has had some wonderful dances and activ- ities this year. Two of the biggest dances of the year were the Christmas Ball and the Junior-Senior prom which were both very successful. Enthusiastic campaigning was seen at election time for student body and class officers. Colorful posters of all sizes and shapes were seen every- where. The rewards of these efforts seem to be worth it. Ann Dahlirz and Helen Zufelt give their campaign speeches for the senior cam- paign assembly held February 12. Carol Rake kisses Duke Doccommon under the mistletoe held by Nancy Tcfcrs to help advertise the mistletoe sale sponsored by the Junior class at Christmas time. The bigger the better” was the theme for campoign posters for the student body elections. Fred Welch, Margaret Furry, and Gary Green holp put up Aram's huge poster. A. Basketball, Tennis, Hockey, and many other sports were planned for the school year's activities. MISS GLORIA KETTERINGHAM 182 The girls P.E. teachers are found in the girls' gym office between classes. The girls had lots of fun this year in gym, modern dancing and on the courts playing volleyball, basketball and tennis. Interclass competition was held with many teams bound and determined to win showing the best of their skills. All girls are required to participate in P. E. classes. This year, the last in the old girls gym, prevented Juniors and Seniors from having a dance program as they have had in previous years. However, modern dance was taught to individual Junior and Senior classes. The girls particularly enjoyed the variety of sports offered them, which included: tennis, golf, archery, and baseball. The tennis tournaments were a source of tough competition and lots of fun as well. The girls not only have developed skill in sports, but have also acquired sportsmanship. ,2 7 BIG A, Row 1: Janet Dwyer, Anna Pond, Linda Sanford, Brenda Buedel.
