After extensive planning, additions to our school were made, which proved to be essential to our needs. New class rooms and laboratories of science and math helped us this year and will help future students in the expansion of their potential. Our class lockers, wearing the school colors, gave us that extra flair in our school spirit needed to boost our al- ready strong athletic prowess to show that the Antelope Rams are synonymous with success. Yes, a great deal of construction, ex- pansion, spirit, and determination went through Antelope this 1986-87 school year, but by no means are we finished. There are still many goals we must attain either in or out of school, to help our- selves, and our loved ones . . . And even though we have the courage, the determi- nation and the edge, we are still only be- ginning, always fresh, always new. We are, and always will be ‘‘Striving for Suc- cess”. Striving to win! EXCHANGE STUDENTS Kobus Ackerman When asked about his stay at Antelope, Kobus commented, “1986 has been the greatest year of my life. I want to thank everybody at Antelope for shar- ing so many special moments during my stay here. The one thing about this school is that is simply FANTASTIC is the spirit and good attitude between stu- dents.” “Groetnis”! Kobus’ home is the most southern com- munity of Africa called Bredas- dorp. Susanna Kiiski Susanna commented, I like Antelope very much and the school has so much spirit. Every- body gets along with each other. I love all the activities the school provides. Mexican food is terrif- ic, especially the burritos and chimichangas. When I go back to Finland, I will have two years left in my high school. After that, I would like to major in marketing. My memories of Antelope will al- ways be cherished. The spirit and pride of Antelope will always be with me. Susanna's home is Heinlahti, Finland. What a relief! Most of our class en- joyed being teased as Freshmen, but we are glad to be moved up in the world. Some of us probably had to admit to evil thoughts that crossed our minds more than once to torture little, vunerable freshmen. Being a sophomore was both ex- citing and challenging. By the begin- ning of our sophomore year we fig- ured out how high school was run, and we accepted responsibilities as a class. We started thinking seri- ously about the importance of our upcoming years ... STRIVING for excellence in academics, leader- ship, athletics and in becoming re- sponsible adults. We are hoping to achieve these goals, both as indi- viduals and as a class. Hmm! Very interesting. Veronica Camarena looks thoughtfully at the camera. Tadal! Sophomore officers demonstrate teamwork. Carole Rush, a member of eight years, earned a position on the All State Governing Board. The board consists of five members select- ed in the state by the Arizona School Board Association. Carole is the second member to earn this position. Bobby Smith was the first in 1984. Way to go Carole! The 1986 Board of Administration was as great as ever. Consisting of a group of veteran's, they kept our school in progression to exceed our goals. The building of the Science and Computer labs were well worth the time and effort put into it by the Board members. The new building has proven to be a great accom- plishment, since many modernizations were made. The new practice gym will be just as great, since plans have been revised many times. The anticipation of the students and fac- ulty was obvious, and everyone was excited about the changes that have been and are be- ing made. It's been a great year! A Looking good, feeling great! As in all previous slave sales, the mon- ey raised was given to the senior class, and the freshman were given to whoever paid for their services . The most ex- pensive slaves”, due to their extreme popularity, were none other than Paul Herrera who sold at $55, Lisa Williams at $51 and Emma McClelland at $50. After the sale was over, everyone was pleased: the seniors had raised good capital, the customers were planning ideas for siave day, and those who didn't buy anything had a good laugh excepting the freshman, who were a little bit ner- vous waiting for their inescapable fate to arrive; but they seemed to be glad that at least day one of initiation was over. The freshmen as usual, were too con- fused to retaliate against their masters” wishes, but still, they managed to survive the day. Pep Assemblies were held on Fridays during 6th and 7th hours. They were not only fun because you could get out of class, but they were also the only time every- body could get rowdy. The seniors started the year off good by winning the first spirit stick. There may not have been many seniors but they sure could out- scream everyone. There was also a bottle of cherry coke given by the cheerleaders to the most spirited student. Jessie Zazueta was the first student to be chosen by the cheerleaders. This year every class and club did their best to make Homecoming as suc- cessful as possible. The juniors lighted the A”, FFA had its’ traditional Bar-B- Que, and FHA sold Homecoming mums. Competition between classes is al- ways exciting, and students expressed their loyalty throughout the week. Each day students dressed up to help their class earn points toward the spirit stick. Homecoming games are always the highlight of the week where tug-of-wars, egg toss, and bat relays put each class to the test. On Friday the Pep Assembly was held and the winners of the Poster Contest were announced. It was a great accom- plishment for the fourth year wres- tling program headed by coaches Pat Koury and Mike Simpson. The 86-87 season was a record breaker in all aspects with eight state quali- fiers and two state champions. Indi- vidual record breakers for the sea- son were Juan Sandigo with 21 pins, Tark Rush with 76 take-downs, and Mike Rivera with a seasonal record of 28-1 and scoring the most team points of 180. With a late start in the season, due to football playoffs, the Rams had three dual meet losses. They came back with eight straight dual meet wins, an undefeated confer- ence record, and the Conference Championship. Eight of the twelve wrestlers who went to divisionals qualified for state. Juan Sandigo, Mike Rivera, and Bob Stricklin all took first place at divisionals. Mike Rivera and Juan Sandigo were named outstanding wrestlers for the middle and heavyweight divisions. Bob Stricklin (191) and Mike Ri- vera (132) both won state cham- pionship titles. Second place finish- ers were Ervin Hale, Juan Sandigo, and Tark Rush while Jason Simpson took third. These wrestlers worked hard and came home as the second place team in the state. Future Scientists The largest club on campus again was the Science Club. A few of their goals were to promote an interest in science and teach good citizenship. With Mr. Frans as the advisor, it couldn’t be boring. They were always taking trips to places like San Diego or Los Angeles. They also had many fund- raisers such as bake-sales, sno-cone sales, and the traditional Valentine’s cakes. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this? When Armando Barrandey, the club’s vice-president, was asked what he thought, he said, “It’s a club where you can just hang out and have fun.” Leading Scientists! Student Council Rep.. The Antelope chapter FBLA mem- bers were striving for success in devel- oping a more competent and aggres- sive business leadership through an in- terest and understanding of American business enterprise. Long range goals for FBLA will be developing a good character to prepare them for being useful patriotic citizens. With an advisor like Mr. Koury, who put a great amount of interest and dedication into the club, it went a long way to reach success its first year at Antelope. You tell ’em. Boss! FBLA President. Key Club International is the world s largest high school service organization with clubs in 10 countries around the globe. Our Key Club was proud to join Key Club International in making caring our way of life. We have offered our services to local people through our Christmas food drive. We have also offered our- selves to help Safe-house and other or- ganizations who were in need of volunteer assistance. Our members are certainly learning by helping and serving the true meaning of this year’s major emphasis program, which is “Understanding Path- way to Progress”. Its goal was to bring the Student body and community closer by putting on plays. The members were there to have a good time and that is exactly what they had. They took field trips to Flagstaff and San Diego to see professionally done plays and always returned with many memories of a great time. STRIVING TO BE SOBER This is the second year for Stu- dents Against Driving Drunk and al- ready many activities were accom- plished by the club. The SADD newsletter, for example, informed and advised students of the dan- gers of driving drunk. Also, the club members engaged in planning ways in which they would present their beliefs to grade school students and the community in general. All in all, the club did a good job in making students and people in the community aware of one of the most dangerous problems in our world at the time: Drunk Driving. With the wise advice of the club’s sponsor Mr. Chavez, the Spanish club decided to bring a folk dance group from Mexico to per- form their abilities at an assembly. Also, the club had plans for a trip to a University or College so the mem- bers, mostly underclassmen (fresh- men, sophomores, juniors), would get an idea how the centers of study function. This seemed to be very educa- tional as well as a successful year for the Spanish club, which endeav- ored not only to concentrate on seeking education for themselves, but for the whole student body. Director: Mr Bechtlotf When interviewing Band Director, Mr. Ken Bechtlotf, we asked him how he gets the gang started after summer vacation. He said, We just start....We prac- tice instruments, and then go to pep band music. At Homecoming we called ourselves Alumni Pep Band because nine graduates played with us—a tradition we wanted to start. Our annual performances included: an Evening Christmas Concert, the B-West Band Festival (state solos and group en- sembles), the Spring Concert, two school assemblies - one at Christmas and one in the Spring, as well as other performances for the local grade schools. And then (Mr. Bechtloff’s favorite performance, he said with a deep sigh), Graduation.” It was a good year for our music makers even though the bands and choir consist- ed of mostly freshmen and sophomores.
