U. H. S. The Slave Sale this year was a slight disappointment because no initiation took place. Despite this disappointment the seniors still made $534 profit. The top selling slaves were Ruben Rivas and Kim Wright. Chuckie Emmons bought Ruben for $29. and Terrie Lambert bought Kim for $27. 1. Slave Sale auctioneer, Eugene Burgett, looking for the highest bidder. 2. Slave Sylvia Perez-Arce wiggles while slave driver Johnny Quiroz watches with interest. 3. Slave driver Freddy Curiel makes sure freshman Jose Rivas sings the fight song correctly. 6 Slave Sale 1. Desert Sands Sophomores Win Each year the Desert Sands Contest is held to help promote yearbook sales. The class who buys the most yearbooks wins the contest. A girl and boy are chosen from each class as representatives and the couple from the class who buys the most yearbooks become Desert Sands King and Queen. This year the Sophomores won the contest by buying 35 yearbooks. The Juniors were second with 21 yearbooks; the Freshmen with 20 came in third, and the Seniors came in last with 19. 1. Juniors Debbie Robinson and Tim Wheeler came in second. 2. Sylvia Perez-Arce and Dave Perez, representing the Freshmen class, came in third. 3. In fourth place are the Senior representatives. They are Johnny Quiroz and Dixie Ordonez. 4. This years Desert Sands King and Queen—Julie Quiroz and Bemie Figueroa. Desert Sands 7 Homecoming November 12, 1976 Homecoming night was a successful one for the Rams when they shut-out Williams 13-0 and captured the B-West title. Halftime ceremonies included the crowning of the queen. Suzanne Madsen by last years reigning queen, Susan Blohm. The queen was es- corted by Carlos Vasquez, other queen candidates were Liz Langford es- corted by Carlos Linzoain and Paula Neinast escorted by Jimmy Mur- dock. The attendants representing the Junior class were Irene Perez-Arce es- corted by Jesus Quintana. Carrie Crenshaw and Bobby Linzoain were attendants for the Sophomore class, followed by Freshmen Debanie Gomez and Jeff Bush. Senior Johnny Quiroz was crowned Homecoming king at the dance follow- ing the game. Other nominees for Homecoming king were Carlos Linzoain and Jimmy Murdock. 1. 1976 Homecoming Queen. Suzanne Madsen. 2. King, Johnny Quiroz posing for a picture. 8 Homecoming Juniors Win Games Each year during Homecoming week Student Counc.l sponsors the homecoming games. The junior class won this year’s games, with the sophomores coming in second. The seniors came in third and the freshmen finished last. Each class had its own part in the Homecoming. During the week the seniors worked on the homecoming float and the juniors worked to get the A lighted. The sophomores decorated the cafeteria for the homecoming dance, and the freshmen supplied the refreshments for the dance. 1. Junior Karen Leavitt was in the egg race for her class. 2. Seniors Jimmy Murdock and Paula Neinast in the toothpick race. 3. Sophomore Teresa Greenough sucking the bottle in the soda pop race. Homecoming games 9 Western Days A Week of Fun Western Days, held every year to celebrate the rodeo, is sponsored by the Sophomore Class, and is their biggest money making event of the year. This year the Sophomores started off Western Days by having the chuck wagon open all week and selling sodas, burritos, comdogs, and candy. Thursday indoor games were held between classes in the auditorium. There were such games as arm wrestling, balloon toss, and pie eating. Outdoor games were held in the compound on Friday. Some of the many games were the volkswagon race, tug-o-war, and egg toss. The games ended this year with a tie between the Sophomores and the Juniors, with the Seniors coming in third and the Freshmen fourth. .. . HI 2. 1. Jenaro Herrera and Doug Sloan in the arm wrestling contest. 4. Eugene Burgett tosses his balloon for the Senior Class. 10 Westem Days 4. Outstanding Juniors Boys And Girls State 2. Each year the University of Arizona spon- sors an award to a Junior boy and girl. The faculty selects these students on their scholarship ability, leadership ability, and character. This years delegates for Boys and Girls State were Barry Lindsey and Diane Beecroft. Runners up were Joe Bush and Teresa Stricklin. 1. Boys State delegate, Barry Lindsey. 2. Diane Beecroft, Girls State delegate. 3. Teresa Stricklin and Joe Bush, Runners up. Boys And Girls State 11 Cinderella Ball The Wild, Wild West Each year, FHA sponsore the Cinderella Ball, one of the formal events of the year. On the night of January eighth, at 8:00, the cafeteria was transformed to a saloon in the days of the wild, wild west, complete with an old-fashion bar, sawdust on the floors, and checked tablecloths. Refreshments were served. Couples danced to the music of Strut. Ceremonies that night included the crowning of Scott Shill as Prince Charming and Dixie Ordonez as Cinderella. Other candidates for Cinderella were Liz Langford, Yvonne Moore, Eva Federico and Suzanne Madsen. Candidates for Prince Charming were Jimmy Murdock, Donny Lange, Eugene Burgett and Carlos Linzoain. 1. Cinderella Prince Charming-Scott Shill and Dixie Ordonez. 2. The Longhorn Saloon. 12 Cinderella Ball Cinderella Ball 13 Christmas Cheer Freshmen Win Every year at Christmas, the students at Antelope participate in a drive for the needy. This year 200 lbs. of food were donated. A Christmas cheer candidate represented each class. The freshmen class can- didate, Charlene Allen was named Miss Christmas Cheer. Runners-up were: Lori Peterson, junior candidate, Eva Federico, senior candidate, and Phyllis West, sophomore candidate. 1. Miss Christmas Cheer, freshman Charlene Allen. 2. Fourth place candidate, sophomore Phyllis West. 14 Christmas Cheer Jr-Sr Prom A Starry Starry Night The Prom, held every year for the Seniors by the Junior class, took place this year in the cafeteria. It was decorated according to the theme “A Starry Starry Night”. The Juniors also hired a band to entertain during the event. Russell Hankins and Paula Neinast were chosen as Prom King and Queen by the Junior class. Other candidates for King were: Andy Davis, Eugene Burgett, Jimmy Murdock, and Scott Shill. The girls chosen for Queen candidates were: Derina Rinehart, Dana Rider, Suzanne Madsen, and Dixie Ordonez. Thanks to the hard work of the Junior class the Prom this year vas a big success. 1. Baseball 1976-77 Volleyball Team We’re No. 1 The Varsity team had 6 veterans returning along with 3 previous players. They came out with a record of 16-3, losing to Humboldt and Yuma along with State Champions, Thatcher. 1. Diane beecroft and Tammy Rinehart wait patiently for a serve to go over. 2. Conference Volleyball 4th Consecutive Year Once again the girls took the B-West Conference Title placing 3 girls on the 1st place all-conference team. They were Karen Leavitt, Diane Beecroft, and Cindy Rockwell, also Jane Finfrock. Yvonne Moore, and Tammy Rinehart were given Honorable Mentions. 1. Mr. Gray presents the Varsity girls with the All-Conference B-West Title Trophy. 24 Varsity Volleyball Junior Varsity Volleyball This year Antelopes’ JV volleyball team had an overall record of 5 wins and 4 loses. When we asked Coach Linda Benson to comment on her young J.V. team she said, “The girls really worked hard on basic volleyball fundamentals and I’m really looking forward to having some of the girls on my varsity team next year.” 1. Volleyball 25 Rams Take State 3 Rams Make Tourney Team Rams take state for the fist time. This was the first year the mighty rams have been in the finals of state competition. They started off with a nip and tuck victory over Round Valley outscoring them 67-64. In the second round Antelope met Thatcher, the team that beat them by 1 point in the second round last year. It was a close game un- til the third quarter when Antelope rolled off 20 points to Thatcher’s 4. The Rams got sweet revenge with a 70-58 victory. In the final round the Rams were up against the tall team from Tombstone. The game was close up to halftime, but in the second half the Rams couldn’t be stopped. They rolled over Tombstone 86-67, as Antelope’s Barry Lindsey set a state tournament record by scoring 50 points. Antelope fans went wild as the State Championship trophy was awarded to Coach Sipe by the Vice President of the A.I.A. and our own superintendent, Mr. Sid Grande. After the excitement cooled down the All Tournament team was an- nounced. Idelfonso Manzo was selected second team all tournament while Manuel Rivas and Barry Lindsey were selected for the first team All Tournament. Barry was also the co-captain of the team. This year’s All Conference team consisted of six Antelope players. At Honorable Mention Steve Kelland and Jimmy Murdock were selected. Second team all Conference were Scott Shill and Idelfonso Manzo, while first team selections were Manuel Rivas and Barry Lindsey. Barry was named the team’s captain. On the All State team Manuel Rivas was a second team selection while Barry Lindsey was a first team selection. Barry Lindsey was also named co-player of the year by the Arizona Republic and KTAR television sta- tion. Barry is the first junior ever to win this award. Coach Sipe was honored by being selected Coach of the Year in the B-west conference. Antelope finished with its best basketball record in the school’s history with a 23-2 record. 1. This year Antelope had three players on the All Tournament teams at state. From left to right, they are: Second team selec- tion, Idelfonso Manzo, and the First team selections Manuel Rivas and Barry Lindsey. 2. The State Champs accept the championship trophy from the A.I.A. vice president, Antelope’s own superintendent Mr. Grande. Basketball 27 J.V. Basketball This years J.V. Basketball team consisted of eleven fine boys. They were Mike Blohm-14, Kenny Wright-32, Brad Davis-10, Bernie Figueroa-12, Robert Madsen-20, Fermin Perez-Arce-24, Jose Rivas-42, Ruben Rivas-22, Junior Manquero-32, Art Villarea-34, and Brad Davis-44. Graphic Arts 49 FHA Sponsors Fall Fashion Show FHA had a new money raiser this year, they had a fall fashion show, using clothes from various Yuma stores. The new money raiser turned out to be quite a success with the Future Homemakers earning $117.00 profit. Most of the money made from this project and other money raisers such as selling popcorn, selling ice cream, and having bakesales go toward the state FHA Convention, The Spanish Dinner, and the Cinderella Ball. FHA sends about 15 girls to a convention of FHA members from all across the state.
