She then moved to the McElhaney's on November 11, 1971. She has been living with them since. Picture above shows Maria (second from right) with her family brother and sisters. Left to right are Jeannie and Blanca Hernandez, and Randy and Linda McElhaney. Center Right is Mariz and Tim Stricklin after tieing in the pie eating contest. Bottom right is Maria herself. We are very proud to have her here at Antelope with us and hope she enjoys us as much as we enjoy her. 5 “Can You Dig Us” You can tell by these pictures that the Freshmen really enjoyed Initiation Day. They were so enthu- siastic about it that the boys girls even got mixed up about what they were going to wear on this big day. The boys were dressed as girls, wearing an old dress and burlap bag, and because they were boys they even put their stockings on the wrong place, their heads, ... very interesting!!! Now the girls didn t really get dressed to come to school they wore boys pajama bottoms and burlap tops. They even forgot to take their hundreds of braids out of their hair, but as Seniors we got the honor of taking them out and fixing their hair for them. It seemed Seniors were having just as much fun as the Freshmen, making the poor little Freshmen do hard tasks, like carry our books to class, and trying to color Freshmen s hair with food color while making them eat shaving cream. Throughout the day whenever Seniors met Freshmen, there were shouts of can you dig us and we dig seniors . The climax of the day came when the Freshmen, under the direction of the Seniors presented an assembly for the entire student body. During the assembly the blacklisted Freshmen preformed special numbers for the awaiting audience. Then everyone was beckoned to the middle compound on campus where the Freshmen were taught the school song by the Senior girls. By the end of the day, a sort of relief was felt by the Seniors and the Freshmen alike. Their Initiation Day had Ended. 6 A-Painting Senior, Randy McElhaney keeping an eye on freshman David Whetten. It was another year of A Painting. Or rather freshmen painting. Herded by the seniors, the freshmen boys attempted to paint the A . It being a traditional event, all was done in work and fun. But ask the freshmen if they'll ever forget it. In the end at least part of the A got painted. Not to mention the freshmen. 8 Pom Pons 9 10 JV Cheer 12 Pep Assemblies 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8- Jump for joy . . . o The show is about to begin? Everyone Enjoys Pep Assemblies? The occasion was the dedication on Antelope's football field. The field was formally dedicated Buckeye Field during half time of the Antelope-Yuma J. V. game. Mr. G Mrs. Charlie Buckeye were honored with a plaque and Mrs. Buckeye was presented with a coursage. The scoreboard had been repainted with the formal title of Buckeye Field inscribed for all to see for years to come. There was a reception afterwards in the cafetorium for all those wishing to attend. HOME VISITOR UARTER DOWN YDS TO GO Assemblies Due to cancellation of assem- blies, pictures were not available. This year Antelope, instead of marching, decided to build a float for the band to ride on. It took two weeks for construction. People stayed up all hours of the night working on it. Many, many thanks go to Mr. Kessler for his hard work and effort and to the many students who also helped. Also a thanks to the people in the community who took the time to make the float successful. This memorable night was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Antelope Union High. The float was constructed with a large blue 20th against the white background, and a blue skirt with ANNIVER- SARY written on it encircling the bottom. It was constructed by the energetic Senior Class. The Antelope fans were thrilled by a specatcular game Home- coming night. The featured event of the AUHS vs. Payson game was the introduction of the queen and her court. This took place Novembers, 1971, during half-time. Our radiant queen, Gwen Millner, was crowned by Susie Kline, last year's queen. Dannette Millner, flower girl, was escorted by Keith Gissendaner, crown bearer. What an appropriate way to commemorate our 20th Anniver- sary !! During the second half of the game, the Rams drove on to put the Longhorns down in defeat, 9-8. At the dance following the game, King Candidates were introduced, and Earl Beecroft was an- nounced as Homecoming King 1971-1972. That moment passed, as all moments will, and is now one of our cherished memories. 62 Seniors :bj ra Wheeler C Philip Ramin Sophomores men' ini Young Cheryl Heide UPPER LEFT: Last year's queen, Susie Kline, is seated with Keith Gissendaner, crown bearer, on her right, and Dannette Millner, Flower girl, on her left.
