Desert Sands Volume XVII, 1970 Wellton, Arizona Table of Contents 1970 Faculty 9 Classes 12 Student Life 66 Honors 96 Royalty 104 Sports 114 Ads 138 Memories, Pressed Between the Pages of My Mind Foreward Of alt the pictures hung on your memories wall, one of the most cherished will be that of your happy, carefree high school days. It is my sincere wish that as the years pass swiftly by, you will often glance through your Desert Sands of 1970, reliving some of these precious moments, and realizing their true value. 5 Sponsor's Message This has been a very hectic year for the staff of the DESERT SANDS. Everyone has been working a little harder at too1' many other activi- ties to devote full time to Yearbook production. We made an Editor change early in the fall, and we really never recovered from that change. We did not get football pictures as I was scouting other teams during our home games. We had no official photographer, just a young man trying to do the job for the Journalism Department. It wasn't until after the second semester began, that we could get a class in photography. This helped the second half, but now we have negatives and no one for the darkroom. My duties in class and library did not always give time for developing and printing . Your 1970 Yearbook is going to be short many pages due to these above mentioned faults, but there are others that have caused us great loss of time on the production line also. We have not had the full cooperation of the student body in all matters. We have developed many pictures and have seen or heard of them floating around the campus. In private collections and not in the 1970 DESERT SANDS. This years DESERT SANDS was to have been the largest ever pro- duced here. It will still have over 120 pages which makes it a fairly large book for this size of a school. You are still getting a bargain, you may not like the coverage of some of your favorite areas. It is our sincerest wish that you will enjoy this issue. We hope that you will understand the many problems encountered by the ten fine young students who have given of their time to try to bring you a won- derful story of the 1969-70 school year. With your cooperation and understanding, I am sure that the 1971 DESERT SANDS will be a success. Thank you. Mr. Baker 7 Thoses Who Rule Superintendent Richard Dawson has completed his fifth year at AUHS. Next year, he will not be with us, as he has accepted a position with a Kingman School District. 8 Mr. Bridger's first year as principal has proven quite effective for this school. He has proven to be worthy of this position. The Mighty 5 Tough As Steel But Hearts of Gold A moment to remember, from year to year, as life rolls on. This humorous play was performed on the AUHS Stage for the first time by the 1970 Junior Class. 64 WESTERN DAYS Characters of All Sorts Not a winner, but happy. Just getting started for the mess ahead. What a Creamy Free-For-All The Sophomores did a colosal job in creating the craziest and messiest Western Days ever experienced. The pie eating contest proved to be a challenge for many hearty young bucks. John Stricklin, however succeeded in eating the cream in less than ten seconds. 67 Onions in the Stew There once was a family on an island new who nothing to eat but onions in the stew. The McDonalds move to the island of their dreams to find happiness and peace. They found instead a beautiful, old rundown house and a house full of company. After a freezing winter and a zillion plumbing accidents, the decision is made to move back to Seattle. This are made worse by guests that never cease in coming. A prospective buyer is looking at the house when most of the McDonald family comes to the realization they could live in no other place. After all what a boring life they would live in Seattle.
