Since then. Antelope has grown greatly in size and has Union High School 1967 become outstanding in many areas. Antelope's first enrollment, which included grades seventh through twelfth, was the grand total of eighty-seven students. The number of students now attending the B - West school is one hundred and eighty five. 3 Desert Sands Staff Editor 1st Semester Kathy Eykamp Editor 2nd Semester Mildred Allen Business Manager Sherry Smith Advertising Manager Sherry Smith Class Editor Kathy Eykamp Honors Editor Mildred Allen School Life Melanie Hicks Organizations John Verschoor Sports Carvin Short Jim Jones Advertisements Sherry Smith Head Photographer John Verschoor Dark Room Staff Carvin Short John Verschoor Larry Hastin Sponsor Mr. John Hyde Dedication Faculty and Administration The production and direction of Antelope Union High School is due to the fine faculty and administration. To these people, we, the Desert Sands Staff, dedicate the ’67 Yearbook, for the many roles they have played. The student body has felt their support in' all of their activities. The never failing efforts of the teachers and administration has helped many students reach stardom. With much appreciation and gratitude we thank you. Foreword The staff has had many comedies as well as tragedies trying to por- tray to you the many times you were on stage and in the limelight. As you look through the pages and review the acts of the year past, we hope this production is a smash hit to you, the Stars. And as the years pass by. re- member, the successes and the fail- ures, the trials and tribulations of growing up and the satisfaction of jobs well done. If sometimes it may be that we must take a lesser role, let us re- member the famous words of Henry David Thoreau. ' 'Why should we be in such des- perate haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprises? If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a dif- ferent drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” So as the curtain rises and the lights dim, we the Desert Sands Staff, hope that you enjoy our pro- duction of. Antelope Union High School 1967. 7 8 Mr. Dawson seems to appear from out of nowhere, especially at lunch time. It seems that when he isn't on duty at noon, the lunch line seems to grow from the mid - die out! It takes a sharp eye and a good memory to keep the End Of The Line Club an existing organization! Antelopes Head Producer After serving as principal three years at Casa Grande Junior High School, Mr. Daw- son came to us here at AUHS. The cheerleaders boost spirit at pep rallies, football and basketball games, and travel to most of the away games. Cheer- leaders are LEFT, Melanie Hicks, TOP, Danna Bow- man, RIGHT, Judy Kline and BOTTOM, Elaine Brimhall. Judy Kline Songleaders Janet McLaurin Becky Kline Peggy Dawson This year's songleaders have done an excellent job performing at pep-rallies, JV and Varsity games. They have all been to songlead- ing camp and feel this has been a contributing factor to their success. This past summer they went to camp at EAJC at Thatcher, Ari- zona bringing back many ideas for novelty routines which they performed dur- ing the year. Songleaders are: LEFT, Mildred Allen; TOP, Peggy Dawson; CEN- TER, Janet McLaurin; LOWER LEFT, Becky Kline; LOWER RIGHT, Karen Brown; RIGHT, Sherry Smith. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, from left are: Pauletta Meyers; TOP, Mary Lynn Coleman; BOTTOM, Barbara Marlatt; RIGHT, Peggy Jo Pratt. They cheered for all home J. He and the Band, (as well as the whole community, ) are very pleased with the new Auditorium and music facilities. Each year the Band participates in the B-West Band Festival, and have rated a first division band for 5 years. Lights set? Props, scenery and furniture in place? Lines learned? Ready or not the curtain is raised and with a little luck and a lot of courage all will go well! Pictured here are Danna Bowman and Peggy Dawson as the two step sisters, sharing the excitement of their mother's coming wedding. At left, the 'Good God- mother', Dame Eva, (act- ually Janet Cobb,) warns Cinderella that she must change her ways. (Pictured on page 25 of the Section divider is Jeanne Ford portraying the part of the 'Evil Godmother', Dame Lilith.) The two maids, (at right, ) are: Kathy Eykamp as Humpleby, (left;) and Kathy Clark as Flora, (rt.) They are obeying Cinderella's orders - getting ready to clean the living- room although it is only a few minutes before the wedding party arrives. Sir James, (George Moore,) tries to comfort his daughter, Cinderella, (played by Melanie Hicks,) after upsetting her with the news of his engagement. She is unsym- pathetic and resentful of the coming wed- ding. 30 The Cinderella Complex Melanie Hicks----------------------------------------------------------- Cinderella George Moore------------------------------------------------- Sir James Wilfer (her father) Sharon Grover --------------------------------------------- Lily Lady Laughingtower (her stepmother) Peggy Dawson---------------------------------------------------------------- Pamela (her stepsister) Danna Bowman------------------------------------------------------------------- Diane (her stepsister) Kathy Eykamp-------------------------------------------------------------- Humpleby (an old nurse) John Verschoor-------------------------------------------------------Prince Charming Carvin Short ------------------------------------------------------- The Herald Dennis Reed------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Whitty (An atomic scientist) Janet Cobb....................................................................Dame Eva (The good Godmother) Jeanne Ford...............................................................Dame Lilith (The bad Godmother) Jock Kissel................................................................ Becky Kline puts on the final trim mings for the Sophomore sponsored Western Dance. u National Assemblies . . . Lola Belle Holmes, (above), former FBI agent, spoke on the activities of the Communist party in the United States. She was sponsored by TACT. Below, Los Malerbas Sisters sharply contrasted against the curtains, give a flirty exhibition of Flamenco Dancing. Their father played the guitar and the younger brother accompanied them in the dances. John Verschoor smiles 'bravely' as Mr. Marcee explains that touching the model of an atomic reactor sends volts of elec- tricity through the human body. Mr. Marcee, in the above picture, spoke on Our Atomic World. Common names magically turned into comical faces when the artist, seen below, gave the National Assembly. He told short stories as he drew, using ultra-violet lights to achieve varying effects with the same drawing. 34 Golden notes from the French horn, oboe and clarinet intertwine with the deep accom- paniment of the bassoon and sharp clear notes of the flute when the woodwind quintet from A.S. U. perform for Antelope. Each mu- sician explained his instrument and later conducted a clinic for high school and grade school bands. Listening intently with various expressions of surprise and interest, Antelope students view a National Assembly in the new Auditorium. Here a color wheel is displayed which was de- signed to create a certain effect when speeded up. Among other things, she burned a handkerchief to clean it! Her program showed how science can be applied to everyday life. No that's not a flaw in the photography, Mr. Leo Gasca is really balancing a ping pong ball on his nose. His act consisted of balancing, juggling, and jokes throughout. A fine example himself, he also gave a short speech on physical fitness. 35 36 Student Council Officers: President, (CENTER) Burt Galindo Vice President, (RIGHT) Sherry Smith Secretary-Treasurer, (LEFT) Elaine Brimhall. The purpose of the organization is to further the members' interest in higher education and spur them on to greater achievements. Members attend summer school at Arizona Western Col- lege for six weeks taking courses such as Science, Math, English, and P. E. They have regular meetings every Thursday after school which consist of a two hour study hall and a business meeting followed by recreation. Throughout the year they attend various concerts and programs at the college. Upward Bound also acts as a service club offering their services as ushers and their assistance in any other capacity.
