We started with fourteen members con- sisting of Roberta Schweitzer, Mary Wood, Darla Daugherty, Kathy Fisher, Carol Hughes, Sharon Wil- liams, Karen Duryea, Eddie Duryea, Penny Franzen, Neal Johnson, Roger Clay, Mike Hickman, Doug Saner, and Yvonne Diefenbaugh, with Mrs. Homer Huntzinger as our teacher. In first grade we were joined by four eager students - Joyce Bartak, DeAnn Sorenson, Laurel Curtis, and Leslie Crone. We lost Kathy Fisher. Penny Franzen, and Neal Johnson. Again Mrs. Huntzinger was our teacher. Our second grade year we were guided by two patient teachers - Mrs. Wanda Wilson, during the first semester and Mrs. Lois Anderson during the second semester. We lost Carol Hughes, but our loss was overshadowed by a gain of five wholesome individuals - Marjorie Fletcher, Robin Fletcher, Dee Adams, Vernon Daugherty, and Danny Gracey making a total of nineteen. Being divided our third year we again had two teachers - Miss McDuffee and Mrs. Borchers. Doug Saner, Vernon Daugherty, Danny Gracey. and DeAnn Sorenson left us with none taking their places. Mrs. Lois Anderson was given the pleasure of teaching our fourth grade class in 1963. We gained one student this year - Greg Hirsch. Fifth grade year we sprang to the total of twenty-one students. Welcomed were Diane Pflaster, Randy Pflaster, Joni Vavra, Edward Sterner, Linda McAlevy, Mike Howard, Connie Howard, and Beth Bartak. LeAnn Jacobsen also joined later in the year. Mrs. Lois Anderson was again our supervisor. We greeted six new students our sixth grade year - Charlene Blakeman, Marie McGinn, Marilyn Bartak, Dean Coleman, Christi Russel, and Everett White. Together we learned school's true meaning- work. Mr. Lauer served as teacher. Our seventh grade class gained Patty Fagan while losing three - Connie Howard. Mike Howard, and Marie McGinn. We also lost Mary Wood during the second semester. Mr. Johnson was a friend as well as a good teacher to many who looked up to him for supervision. We gained most of our students during our eighth rade year - Barbara Daily, Bill Thiel, Bonnie Sargent, Tom Knott, Karen Kinish, Jeanette Holley. Kathy Fisher, Renea Fiorelli, Joyce Curtis, Judy Clang, and Peggy Christen. Because of our over-populated school room, they gave half of us to Mrs. Lois Anderson and the other half to Mrs. Lucile Smets. Barbara Daily, Roberta Schweitzer, and Tom Knott sneaked out before we entered high school. Cathy McCullough, Mary Wood, David Tucker, Ray Squier, and Nelda Hall were welcomed by the remaining Freshman class in 1968. Our sponsor was Mr. Sawyer. Being welcomed to the Sophomore class was Vicki Stithem who made the number of students thirty-nine. Later the same year Bill Thiel left. Mr. Edelman served as class sponsor. Our Junior year Mr. Edelman worked along with the class to prepare for prom. It was a lot of work so we felt lucky to have him as a sponsor. This year Nancy Ritchie who had joined us in the seventh grade left and was replaced by Shirley Carson who also left a little later. Rick Linderman and Bill McCaslin joined us during this year. Student wise our Senior year we had an even break. Rick Linderman left the second semester but was soon to be replaced by Patricia Romo Leroux A., our friend from Ecuador. Everyone had fun on Sneak when we finally got going, including our sponsor, Mr. Doug Shada who was well-deserving of the trip. BOYS TRACK SEASON 1971 This year, the Anselmo-Merna boys' track team had a very successful season. They started out with a squad of 35 boys. They ended up winning two championships-the Callaway Invi- tational and the Custer County. They also received two third places, one in the Ord Invitational and the other in the LHTC, and they placed fifth in their District meet. This was the best season experienced by the boys in the past several years! Good going, BOYS! Randy Shada competed in the discus and the two-milers which have had a really good season this year won the right to compete at this meet also. There were several stand-outs which always won points for the team at most of the meets this year. Some were Dean Coleman in the 440 and 880; Duane Russell in the 440 and 880; Melvin May in the two-mile run; Randy Shada and Dwight Osterhoudt in the shot put and Randy in the discus; Mike Hickman in the 440 and 880; and Tom Spanel in the two-mile relay. But without the support and help of the rest of the team members, the boys would not have experienced so successful a season as they did. The night of graduation she presented the flag of her country with the following speech: It is an honor for me to greet you at this moment-so important for everybody. This is a very special graduating class, this year, and I am honored to be among them. Mr. Adams, may I present the highest symbol of my country, the flag of Ecuador and offer most sincere greetings from my country to this big state of Nebraska. I am most grateful for all the kindness and courtesy that every one has shown me. I really can't find words to express what I feel, but I am sure that I will never forget you and all the wonderful months at Anselmo-Merna.
