--144 THE ANOKAN 26 to Milaca 0. Our fellows next took on Monticello, who was rated as a strong team, but turned out to be a disappointment. Every member of the squad had a chance to play and we came out on top of the lopsided score 42-O. Cambridge, who had beaten us for a couple of years straight, was confident of another victory, but the tables turned and we won 19-O. Louie, with his spectacular running and stiff-arming, gained many yards. Jim, Don, Ev, and Mace also showed neat runs. Felix and O'Connor, linemen, starred also. With five victories, no defeats, and the "Herd's" fighting spirit on edge, they tore to Elk River to take on our arch-rivals. The first half, Anoka had several chances to push over a touchdown, but seemed to lack something which kept them from doing so. The line was playing superb ball. John Spence, who was a tower of strength in every struggle, was playing his best game. The half ended 0-O. Then, that never-to-be-forgotten second half. Louie and Roberts had a neat little punting duel and then came the extirpation. The line charged in perfect unison, during the rest of the game, Louie put over three touchdowns. Long smashing runs by Hollom, Flint, and Miller were great to see and paved a way for Louie's scores. The game ended as fiercely as it started and the score was Anoka 20, Elk River 0. Our fellows had the cham- pionship cinched and Osseo was a weak team, but they kept fighting to the last minute. Felix, our rangy end, snared two long passes and proved himself an able track candidate by outdistancing all pursuers. O'Connor, our captain and end, also caught two beautiful passes and scored twice. Jimmy collected a couple of touchdowns and Miller and Betlach got one apiece. The game ended 49-0. Five of our fellows were placed on the all-district team: Pat O'Connor at end: Dan Felix at tackle: Louie Betlach, fullback: Jim Hollom, quarterback: and Johnny Spence at center. Johnny also received honorable mention on the all-region team. We were one of the twelve Minnesota high school teams to be undefeated for the 1930 football season. Football Anoka's "Thundering Herd" led by Captain Pat O'Connor stampeded to Princeton for their first conference game. It was a see-saw battle with Flint, Betlach, Miller, and l-lollom struggling for a touchdown. Finally Jimmie, on a long pass from Mace, went over for the only score of the game and our first triumph. The following Friday the "Herd" met Mound in a gory combat. The Anoka gridders were out to revenge themselves. lt was a rather even struggle until in the second quarter when Jimmie got a pass from Mace' and ran for a score. Louie made the extra point good. Anoka's line fought grimly to hold their lead. But in the third quarter, Mound blocked a kick and re- covered behind our goal for six points. 'NVe won, however, 7 to 6. The "Redmen" from Milaca came whooping down here to take Anoka's scalps. The Anoka team, seeing a district championship in sight, was determined to annihilate them too. The melee started and our boys were quick to grab the advantage. Matheny scored on two passes from Mace to start the slaughter: Mace then added one himself and Jimmie followed with an intercepted pass to score another touchdown. Milaca was held scoreless and the game ended Anoka Thirty-5.'x
