From the Pens THE SEA The tumble and grumble of the sea Make these lines of poetry Dancing and crashing against the rock NVith the slow precision of a clock. On a warm day the sea is calm, 'You'd wonder how it could hold any harm, The fishes slide along so slow, We see them as we softly row. Now it is dark We'll have to turn home, So this is the end Of my little poem. PAUL Ross, '42 THE SKY The sky is like a graceful lady Who tries to please each lad and lassie, Wearing robes of blue and white And a black one every night. Her amber gown is dotted with stars ' Which can be seen from near and far, The moon also has its share Like a diamond in her hair. When she dons her robe of gray Dull, we know, will be that day, But when she wears the sun's bright rays, All artists are powerless in their praise. HELEN ASSAF, '41 TRAVEL I've always wanted to travel All over the United States, Before I started my journey To the beautiful pearly gates. I'd like to go to California, To Florida and Arkansaw, I'd like to go to Pennsylvania And also stop at Omaha. My Grandmother lives in jersey And I'm her favorite Grandson, But still I want to see the West As far as Oregon. ROBERT WESTCOTT, '42 THE WORTH OF IT ALL Did you ever think as you strive for gold That a dead mans hand, a dollar cannot hold? 'You may scrimp and strive, 'You may scrape and save, But you lose it all when you reach the grave. RosE MARY LEAVITT, '41 of Our Poets OUR LATIN TEACHER He is a marvelous talker This Reverend Edward f. Walker He teaches Latin every day This helps to drive his friends away. He starts the day with a crowd of Sophs Who greet Caesar with nothing but scoffs The Freshmen are quite a problem, I'd say And the juniors and Seniors add to the fray. He tries to teach us idioms and clauses, And now and then he stops-he pauses, Wondering with a little mirth just how much all this is worth. MARY O'LEARY, '41 GIFTS Birthdays and Christmases and other days, too just to go out shopping to buy something new! Will it be red, or green or orange or blue? Will it be hankies, or ties, a pair of socks or two? He has too many hankies and too many socks. He likes to choose his own ties He doesn't care for gifts in the box. What a particular fellow- this dad of mine! And now, will you tell me how to end my rhyme? ALICE GUNNING, '40 MY GROWING TREASURE I have many pretty flowers That grow by leaps and bounds, Helped along by showers And the richness of the ground. Little flowers, great big flowers, Beautiful to me, Forming dainty bowers Coming o'er the lea. There are daffodils and roses, Sweet peas and marigolds Arranged in different poses Varied hues and rows. When you step into my garden And scent the balmy, fragrant air, When you see my growing treasure, 'You'll attend a NATURE FAIR. NORAH HALL, '40
