To the Class of T 68 Poetry has been one factor in the growth of th is class. While each of you has her own favorite, the poem which seems to typify this class is Edwin Markham ' s Outwitted . He drew a circle that shut me out- Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win: We drew a circle that took him in. Circles are constantly drawn and re-formed. As this year has de- veloped your class has gradually forged its circle of strength. The ad- versity of inter-personal relationships has hammered that circle and created bonds among you which have been founded on mutual respect and consideration. For some these bonds have been tenuous as individuals have drawn circles to exclude others; as they have learned to bring others into their personal lives those relationships have been strengthened. Best of all has been the spirit of initiative displayed by this class in rising to specific needs. This gained for you wider circles of friends, a stronger circle of respect, and a firmer circle of cohesive action. May the spirit of this poem ever be with the Class of 1968 as they join the wider circles of college life.
