THE SHIELD 1958 THE OH 1958 THE ANNIE WRIGHT SEMINARY TACOMA, WASHINGTON FROM STRENGTH TO STRHsrGTH In Memory of KARL ERWIN WEISS, 1903-1957 whose life, work, and teaching were an expres- sion of loyalty to the highest ideals of Truth, Beauty, and Love which he kept ever before us, and were an inspiration to those of us priv- ileged to be his students. DEDICATION To those who, through their deep concern for the school, have made possible the new wing, and the Chapel of Saint Mary, we, the Class of 1958, proudly dedicate this our Shield. RUTH JENKINS, L.H.D. Headmistress Cited June 6, 1958 by the Shattuck School, Faribault. Minnesota for her service to secondary education. Miss Jenkins, it is your leadership, your insight, your insistence on high ideals that have made these past years important ones in our lives. We have loved this school; we have loved the spirit which pervades it, which comes from you. You have taught us to strive for excellence and have showed us the need for the love and strength derived from God. These things we cannot forget, and it is our desire and our certainty that, in the years to come, we shall go on from strength to strength . In its Junior year it stopped growing and devoted its energies to The Song of Bernadette , the sale of Sylvia ' s alligator jaws at Junior Sales, and an Italian Prom. Step songs and first walk-line initiated Senior Year. Then hours were spent uking various and sundries for Carnival, the Nutcracker Suite , headed by Joan Munroe. rhe Christmas Tea and movies for Service League, arranged by Deanna Poulsen, enter- tained the whole school. All winter and spring Fifty-eight watched the mail for college notifi- itions. Then, suddenly, May Day came, and Queen of the May, Sally Spaulding, reigned over her court. The class moved with the year toward graduation; it looked back over its Seminary years, and it knew that although, per- haps, it hadn ' t been the most sophisticated of classes, it had certainly had the most fun. Oh, fifty-eight, we don ' t deny that we are great; Onward we go, opposing e very kind of foe. Great we will stand, against the best in all the land! Red and White, we ' ll always fight; Go forward, ever forward, Annie Wright. Oh, Red and White, our colors are so true and bright: Onward to fame and always honour our good name Stand up for right, and, though the sky be dark with m nt, Red and White, we ' ll always fight; Go forward, ever forward, Annie Wright! JUNIORS Enthusiasm was the trademark of the Class of 39 as it embarked on its Junior year. Exploding from song and skit and remaining through hours of prepa- rations for activities, it sparked the action of the en- tire class. Throughout the year any mention of Jun- ior Sales brought grins of appreciation for the weekly and hilarious skits (courtesy of Robin) and for good food on Friday. Long weeks of rehearsal furtively guarded the secrets of just why You Can ' t Take It With You ' until performance night. The curtain calls were scarcely done when the House of the Sugar Plum Fairy tempted all sweet teeth at the Carnival. Winter term started with a splash at a party for Service League. Then followed minute in- vestigations of colleges, instruction into the mysteries of Senior Duties , and plans for THE Prom. Finally, on April 19, came that romantic evening on the Old Plantation. Decorating for May Day was hardly a past project when the class creativity was turned to Step Songs, the singing of which would make the Juniors Seniors. It was a good year — full of work and activity — it was a year of contagion — everyone caught and held Enthusiasm. Soon the new faces were familiar, each one a special part of ' 60. Gale Ehrlich was elected to Service League, Karen Warren to SAC; Sandy McCrea served on House Council. The year had begun! And with the whole library to care for, Carol Craft assumed responsibility for the library committee. There was much to do: Linda Larson organized the Christmas wrapping sale for Service League. Lynne Rubush steered the class through the making of animals for Carnival. The whole class worked to make the deco rations for the Student Council Dance Fascinating . Then, it was not long before the class was involved in another dance — it ' s own. The Freshman- Sophomore Hop, guided by Gale Ehrlich, was wonderful. In March thoughts turned to the faculty baby picture contest for Service League. Then it was time to greet dates and serve punch for the Prom; spring had really come — and at May Day the class beamed with pride as Gale and Pegg) ' carried the American and Canadian Flags. And then — next year! The class is set to prove that its class song is right, that each challenge is a victor} Advisors: Mrs. Vojtech, Miss Lonon PATRICIA GIBSON President PEGGY YATES Vice President CHRISTINA ENGL Secretary Lloyd Allen Barbara Benson Didi Carstens Shirley Cartozian Lyn Chaney Carol Craft Barbara Jane Curtis Gale Ehrlich Alex Fisher Carlye Hawkins Sue Huff Linda Larson Sandra McCrea Phyllis Morris Lynne Rubush Linda Tompkins Clay Towne Betty Walker Karen Warren Maria Weiss Margaret Woodhams r 1 t % ♦ • FRESHMEN As you look over the study hall at noon assembly you can see thirty-three yellow tie girls in the front rows. They are the Class of ' 61, the newest members of the Upper School. Their ideas, spirit, and zest have made them a happy, striving class, as their song shows — as their magazine drive showed, too. It was, under the leadership of Margi Angus and Sharon Staples, the most successful drive in years, and made a large contribution to the Service League fund. At Christmas Carnival they were again successful — with a class booth. In the winter they planned and carried out a ' ' Carousel theme for the Freshman-Sophomore Hop, and the whole school had a wonderful time. Looking back they are proud of what they have done. Looking forward they are confident of going from Strength to Strength .
