Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1956 volume:

THE SHIELD 1956 Hail to thee our Alma Mater, Seminary Fair. May achievements crown thy labors Is our earnest prayer. Deep and true as those blue waters Thou art reared above. May the characters thou moldest. Hold thee in their love. Pure as yonder snow clad mountains Where our glances fall. May we in the years to follow, Answer to thy call. Chorus Hearts turned toward our Alma Mater, Mav our lives at len gth Prove thy daughters bear thy motto On from Strength to Strength. TACOMA. THE GRAND TOUR You know what you have done and learned this year, but do you know what other people in the school have done? K-4 was in its own building. The most exciting events were a circus and a visit from their mothers. K-5 found their most important step was coming to chapel every morning. They wore their brand new uniforms, swam in the pool, and prepared to read. The men in this women ' s world constructed a Wrightsville Post Office. Just as their namesake, Charles B. Wright, they were very interested in trains and transportation. If you had gone into the FIRST CLASS room, you would have found them reading and writing, surrounded by models of a community. The SECOND CLASS learned about children in other lands. They were very lucky because their own teacher has taught in South America, England and Denmark, so they seemed to live with children of other countries. Ask any THIRD CLASS girl about our state, and she would tell you with pride, about its history and its people. Their older sisters in FOURTH CLASS traveled through all the states. Did you see the clay models of Grecian temples and Egyptian pyramids in the FIFTH CLASS room or the illuminated manuscripts painted in the SIXTH CLASS, during their study of the history and life of the Middle Ages? This year the formation of a MIDDLE SCHOOL Athletic Association was a wel- come innovation. In these years responsibility and leadership are developed more than ever before. The students seem increasingly aware that they are examples for the Lower School and wear with great pride the same uniform as the Upper School. Finally, the tour comes to the FRESHMEN, where each student is responsible for her own behaviour under the Honor System. The study hall is proctored by srudents, and the House Council directs the life of the boarders. In all four classes opportunities for service are important. Each class has a project to raise money for Service League; each has one or more booths at the Carnival; each has many members in TASC. This year the magazine drive, sponsored by the FRESHMAN CLASS, was very successful, and at the Carnival they sold countless AWS dogs. We will remember the originality of the library displays of the SOPHOMORE CLASS and the delicious free food of the JUNIOR Sales. My Sister Eileen was their choice for the JUNIOR Play. Do you remember Miss Fitzwilliams ' sudden entrance from the chimney? In the SENIOR CLASS, fun and responsibility are combined in a wonderful way; running the switch- board, selling in the bookstore, managing milk lunch, and ushering in chapel. More im- portant than all of these is the setting of a good example for the school to follow. EARTH YOU ARE TOO WONDERFUL Thornton Wilder We never realize the wonder of Our Town until we have left it, or the joy of the activities that formed our characters as we lived here under the government of the Student Council. Miss Jenkins and Miss Fitzwil- liams guided the representatives of the classes and activities. The perma- nent dwellers in Our Town were governed by their town council, coun- selled by Miss Jenkins, Miss Fitzwilliams, and the housemothers. Service League helped us to be aware of the needs of others very far from Our Town. Looking after our more immediate needs was The Athletic Service Club. Its members ' duties varied from afternoon child care to drying heads in the shower room! Overseeing all athletic activities was the Student Athletic Council, whose special projects ranged from scheduling tournaments to decorating the dining room on May Day. On that evening the trophy is always awarded to the captain of the winning Blue or Gold Team. This year on March 3rd, Our Town really came to life under the imaginative direction of Mrs. Monks and the talented players of Masque. In the pages of the Ivy Vine, the creative writing magazine of the school, we wrote the daily experiences of Our Town, and during the year we enjoyed the finished performances of the Glee Club and Modern Dance Group. Just as in any other community, the religious life has increased our concern for others. Two organizations contributed to the chapel worship. Raynor Guild cared for the linen and vestments and decorated the chapel at Christmas and Easter. The Choir sang their joyful anthems and led our hymns. Singing, dancing, writing and serving, we had a happy, creative year.
