NEWS BITS Sadie Hawkins Dance Held in Annafwan The Sadie Hawkins dance, sponsored by the FHA was greatly enioyed and considered a great success bv the students and faculty of the school. lt was hbld in the school gymnasium, decorated attract- ively and cleverly with cornstalks, pumpkins, and bales of straw used as chairs. The girls were attired in colorful cotton skirts and blouses while the boys were equally attractive in their blue ieans and bright colored shirts. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. lihrig, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Osborn, G. T. Rainey, and Mrs. lVilliam Allen, and the FHA sponsor, Miss Betty Ohlmacher, served as chaperones. The evening was opened by Mrs. Ramah Peek, who led the group in the grand march. She later led the dancing of the Virginia Reel. The Charleston contest was won by joan Mor- isette and Mary Ann Gripp. The Tangle Rope contest was won by Stella Andrews and Les Nelson. Refreshments of cider and doughnuts were served during the evening of dancing. Student Council Sponsors Christmas Party joan Morisette acted as master of ceremonies at the Christmas Party. Santa Claus was a special guest. Mrs. Alice Roberts led the students and teachers in singing Christmas Carols. Other stu- dents who appeared on the program were: Rodney Zinser, Alvina Eilers, Dale Nowers, Shirley Poison, Donald Foerder, joan and Mary Ann Grypp, At'- vin jackson, Sharon Ufheil, Stella Andrews and Rosemary XVancket. A contest of Twenty Ques- tions was conducted by members of the Senior class using two members from each class as contestants. FHA Holds Mother-Daughter Banquet, Initiation Twelve girls were initiated during the candlelight ceremony in charge of the president, Margaret Browning and Miss Betty Ohlmacher, sponsor. Mrs. F. C. Dewey, the chapter mother was an honored guest. Proving that chivalry was not dead among the 30 FFA boys, a representation from their ranks did a grand job of serving the banquet. Doris Gradert, program chairman, introduced A r-- vin jackson, who sang 'AThere's No Tomorrow, and lt's a Big lVide lVonderful lVorld... joan and Mary Ann Grypp, who sang My Heart Cries for You. Virginia Quaife and Elaine Dcllraenc, who sang That lVonderful Mother of Mine. Rosemary lVancket was the accompanist. AHS Bd7ldS7llC7l Get High Honors District Contest The saxophone sextet, directed by Ben Vitro, composed of Sharon Ufheil, Betty Monson, lithel Shaw, Carol Machcsney, Bob Nowers, and Clarence Miller, playing Ulndian Dance, won first honors at the district solo and band contests at Abingdon. The mixed clarinet quartet, composed of Mar- garet Browning, Marian jorgenscn, joan Grypp. joan Morisette, playing L'Bouree, won second hon- ors. Marilyn Keim and Charlene Parker, playing Pepperino, as a clarinet duet won second. Rose- mary lVancket accompanied. Annafwan School Band Concert Friday Nighf Eleventh annual concert of the Annawan school band, Friday, March 30, at 8 p. m., will have as soloists the first public appearance of the saxophone sextct, a clarinet duet and the performance of the Dream of Olwen, a piano solo played by joan Morisette, accompanied by the band. There will be a social hour after the concert. Coffee and pie will be served by the band boosters club. Annafwan Band Winner First at Abingdon Annawan high school band received first place rating at the District 5 band conest at Abingdon Saturday. Annawan and Alexis were the only two schools out of six bands in class D to receive first place ratings.
