NEWS BITS Amzafwan High Appoimx New Head Coach Fred Parks, a graduate of Bradley University this term has been hired to be athletic director and head coach of Annawan high school. Parks, whose home is in Chicago, served in the navy in XVorld TVar ll in the Pacific. Parks was a letter-man at Bradley, and was part- time physical education director at Lock school in Peoria. Parks will take over the freshman and sophomore basketball team immediately and will coach high school track and baseball. Prin. A. Ll. lihrig will continue to coach the varsity basketball team until the end of the season. Parks is living at the home of Mrs. Florence Powell until he can bring Mrs. Parks to Annawan. The new coach succeeds Benton Odum, who left Annawan last week to enter military service. Odum had taken the Annawan position last September. succeeding Zane Hamm. The new coach attended Englewood high school in Chicago. He won football and baseball letters at Bradley. VVhile in the navy he earned a rating as carpeliter's mate 5-c. ln addition to his athletic duties at Annawon he will also teach social science. One of his first duties will be the direction of next month's freshman-sophomore basketball meet here. Ammwan, Ohio lVin Annawan and Ohio copped victories in the fresh- man-sophomore basketball tournament here Tues- day night. Annawan tripped Atkinson 48-45, in an overtime. The score was tied at 41-41 at the end of regulation play. Ohio ranked Znd with XVyanette 3rd, Annawan won their first round only to drop to Ohio in one of the thrillers of the tournament by a score of 45-44. lVyanette then set them back to 4th place by a score of 43 to 32. Keeley and Price made many sensational shots and rebounding Knot to mention the shot from center made by Browningl. Miller, Clementz, Van- dersniek, Gilbraeth and Augie De May were in there playing and doing their part at all times. The victory made an auspicious debut for Coach Benton Odum, former grid all-star at Marion high. Annawan trailed 7-6 at halftime but the Braves exploded with three touchdowns in each of the last two periods to win. Eugene Versluvs paced the winners with three touchdowns and Bob Now- ers added two. Ron Oleson and Del Doubler also scored Annawan touchdowns and Reider added two extra points. LE-Oleson, D.
