Commanding fficer Captain William J. Wacker, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wacker of 5216 S. Myrtle Avenue, Seattle, Washington, attended school in Seattle including the UniVe1'SitY of Washington and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, Maryland. He joined the Navy's V5 Program on June 25, 1942 and was commissioned an Ensign and Designated Naval Aviator simultaneously on August 16, 1943 at Corpus Christi, Texas. During World War II, the Captain flew with Bombing Squadron 12 from the USS Saratoga, where he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, and later with Fighter-Bomber Squadron 15 and 20A, operating from various Carriers in the Pacific theatre including the USS Boxer and USS Antietam. Two and one-half years of the Korean Conflict were spent piloting R5D's and R6D's for Naval Transport Squadron Three which participated in air lift and air evacuation transport operations in Korea. Since Korea, the Captain has had duty at NATTU Glenview, Illinois, the sea- plane tender Gardiner's Bay, Heavy Attack Squadron Eight flying the A3D, the Navy's largest carrier based plane, and the Bureau of Naval Weapons, Wash- ington D.C. He has studied at the U,S, Naval War College. He commanded Fleet Air reconnaissance Squadron One fVQ-ly based in Atsugi, Japan. He served as Executive Officer of the ASW Carrier Kearsarge from January 1964 to June 1965, during which time the ship and its ASW group provided ASW support for the ships involved in the first and second Gulf of Tonkin Incidents. Captain Wacker finished a tour at the office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Pentagon, Washington D,C. as Assistant for Special Missions Systems fElec- tronic Warfare, Reconnaissance and Surveillancey, before his arrival aboard Annapolis. The Captain was promoted to his present rank August 1, 1964. He is married to the former Mary Lou Marutz of Bicknell, Indiana. The Wackers and their three children - Cheryl, 183 Brad, 155 and Tim, 13 - live at 11221 South Shore Road, Reston, Virginia.
