OUR COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Newland was born in Cohoes, New York, in 1921. After graduating from Waterford High School, Waterford, New York, he entered the U. S. Naval Academy and was commissioned in June 1942- He was initially assigned to USS RANGER CCV-45 and shortly thereafter to the USS DENVER CCL-581i on which he participated in both the Solomon Islands and the Marianas Campaigns. In July 1944 he reported aboard USS TOPEKA CCL-671 as Communications Officer. After four months, he was ordered to the Postgraduate School, Annapolis, Maryland, where he underwent a ten month course in Command Communications. From November 1945 to April 1948 Captain Newland was assigned to the Staff of Commander Support Group, Far East, and served successively as Communications Officer, Flag Lieutenant, and Flag Secretary. In June 1948 he returned to Post- graduate School, Annapolis, Maryland, for a three year course in Electronics Engineer- ing. In February 1954, after two and one half years as Navigator of USS DES MOI- NES QCA-1345, he reported to S. Naval Communications Station, Honolulu, Ha- waii, as Operations Officer, and later became Executive Officer. Captain Newland was given his first command, USS MACKENZIE CDD-8365, in July 1956, and under his command she won two E's . In July 1961, after almost three years in Communications on the Staff of CIN- CPAFLT, he was assigned as Commander Escort Squadron 5. Fourteen months later gefgeturned to U. S. Naval Communications Station, Honolulu, Hawaii, as Commanding icer. Prior to being assigned as Commanding Officer, USS- ANNAPOLIS, Captain Newland served on the Staff of CINPAC in Communications, Captain Newland's decorations and medals include Joint Service Commendation, gag. Unit Commendation, American Defense' Q1 Stark American Theatre, Asiatic ac ic C starsl, Victory WW II, NHVY Occupation, China Service, National De- fense, and Vietnam Service Medal. He is married to the former Miss Cele Cicchinelli, of Waterford, New York, and has one 5011, l0l'1n Newland, III.
