Originally only three foreign languages were taught at Annandale—Latin, French, and Spanish. Only 215 students were enrolled. At the present time, five years of French and Spanish are offered, four years of Latin and German, and three years of Russian. Today the amazing total of 1398 students (more than 70% of those in attendance) are taking a foreign language. The original department included Mrs. Jean Payne, Mrs. Frances Garnjost, and Mrs. Rose Little, all of whom are still on the faculty. MISS NANCY GRAVES ' S ROSE F. All courses emphasize current events, and a full unit about Communism has been added to the senior gov¬ ernment course. For mature stu¬ dents new courses in sociology and economics are now offered. New methods of instruction which stress speaking and understanding as well as read¬ ing and writing in the language have been introduced in recent years.To help implement this change, several members of the de¬ partment have attended intensive training institutes. A language laboratory wasopened in 1960, and now each teacher has a tape recorder and other aids for classroom use. MRS.
