.yn Wemoriam BETTY BROOKS 1931-1947 This page is fondly dedicated to the memory of Betty Brooks, Class of '49, Her winsome personality, her delightful friendship, and her radiant life endeared her alike to classmates and teachers. enior C ami Jwdforg Days will come and go, and A-J will still stand, but the class of '49 will no longer walk its halls. Instead, we'll be on the outside looking in and remembering our own days within its cherished walls. We'll remember days filled with activity and memories that will never fade. As green Freshman, we entered the unfamiliar halls of A-J one hundred and twenty-two strong, backed up by excellent leaders and class advisors. Our class officers were: Bill Murrie, President, Harold Page, Vice-President, Mary Sue Dillow, Secretaryg And Byrl Boyd, Treasurer. How could a class fail to get off to a good start with the aid of such deans as Mr. David Stroup, Mr. Keith Whetstone, Mrs. Jean Boult, and Miss Clara Bartow back- ing us? From the first, our class provedistelf talented in scholarship and sportsg a promis- ing leader of the future. Our Sophomore year was started with a bang when our almost unscored-on football team had as one of its varsity members, Harold Page, just another member of our class, who succeeded in obtaining a cherished letter for his efforts. With the exception of Miss Ruth Esther Hill, who took Mrs. Jean Boult's place, our regular deans remained with us, and our new class officers were: Harold Page, President, Robert Choate, Vice-President: Betty Brooks, Secretary: and Ward Baker, Treasurer. As jolly, jolly Juniors, we entered the portals of A-J at last as upper classmen with all our Sophomore deans remaining with us. Our officers who carried us through this very busy year were: Robert Choate, Presidentg Harold Gardner, Vice-President: Mary Sue Dillow, Secretary, and Betty Boyd, Treasurer. Our class was well represented on the major teams in sports, four our of our first five in basketball came from our ranks. Janie Rendlemen, Ruth Ann Smith, Jerry Houghton, and Ivan Johnson were elected to the National Honor Soci- ety: four of the seven who entered the Local Honor Society as Freshmen and remained through their Junior year, setting a new record. Ivan Johnson, Jerry Houghton, and Robert Choate were elected to the Athletic Scholarship Society, showing versatility in both sports and scholarship. Our Junior Play, The Goof from Gopher Gulch created a mild sensation and will be remembered for years. In the cast were: Robert Choate, Ruth Ann Smith, Janie Rendlemen, Judy Gurley, Mary Sue Dillow, Mike Brown, Betty Boyd, Jerry Houghton, Jo Ann Gollon, Cornelia West, Marcia Fox, and Maralyn Sitter. We started our year as grave, old Seniors with the added help of two new deans: Mrs. Veda Etheridge, who took the place of Mr. David Stroup, and Mr. Roger Spear, who replaced our retiring dean, Miss Clara Bartow. Our Senior class officers, who were chosen to lead us through our busiest year were: Robert Choate, President, Byrl Boyd, Vice-Presidentg Jo Ann Gollon, Secretary, and Judy Gurley, Treasurer. For the first time in the history of our school, the basketball team, composed of five important Seniors, won the conference title, winning also places for Jerry Houghton on the first All-Conference Team, Willard Cooper,on the second team, and Robert Choate on the third five. For our Senior play, we chose the well-known play, We Shook the Family Tree, which had as its cast: Robert Choate, Jo Ann Gollon, Henry Murphy, George Dillow, Marcia Fox, Maralyn Sitter, Esther Burchell, Judy Gurley, Ruth Ann Smith, Robert Karraker, and Willard Cooper. The class leaves behind a memory that will not soon be forgotten, a memory of happy days shared with all. We are now only on the outside looking in, but our minds see more than walls and rooms--they see four years of never-forgotten living. 16
