Official predictions painted a very dismal picture regarding the for- tunes of the 1953-54 edition of the Anna Rockets. Despite this pessimis- tic forecast, Coach Green molded the Rockets into a formidable unit capable of competing with the best this area could offer. On November 20th, before an overflow crowd in the local gym, Anna subdued arch rival Jackson Center, 65-59. Jim chalked up 32 points to lead the scoring parade in this encounter. Ft. Loramie became the first league casualty of this potent Anna team by a score of 65-38. Anna maintained a comfortable lead through- out. Neighboring Botkins was defeated by the talented Rockets, 59-55, on December 11. Hulsmeyer and Inderrieden scored 24 and 22 points re- spectively in this extravaganza. Leading all the way, the Rockets trounced Houston, 60-46, for their fourth straight league victory, having beaten Jackson Center, 50-33, in the previous game. The Russia Raiders were dealt a 49-36 lacing for the Rockets' fifth straight league victory. Hulsmeyer played an outstanding game to lead the scoring with 22 points. An underrated Fairlawn team nearly upset the dope. However, the Rockets rallied in the late stages to conquer this inspired foe, 40-38. This victory assured the Rockets of first place in the Shelby County league race. Throughout the basketball season the Rockets engaged in a number of non-league games. At the onset of the season Anna lost a hard fought game to a classy New Bremen five. Hulsmeyer and Inderrieden led the attack against the Cardinals by contributing 14 and 13 points respectively. New Knoxville edged the Rockets in their first home engagement. Boney Inderrieden swished the nets for 22 points. The Rockets hit their stride. to defeat a lanky Holy Angels quintet, 66-40, after two reversals. Huls- meyer was the outstanding scorer in this contest with 27 points. Hunts- ville fell before the Rockets, 56-53, in a closely contested encounter. Anna lost its third game of the season to a well-balanced Cridersville team, 67-47. An unusually small gym was definitely instrumental in the 20-point spread between these teams. Inderrieden was high point man with 21. Anna salvaged a 48-46 victory over Buckland, defeated a stubborn Brown aggregation, 67-50, but lost to a top-rated Minister team, 68-57, fell before a strong Ft. Recovery five, 62-57, and was downed by a classy Bradford quintet, 68-57. In the Rosewood Invitational tournament the local five managed to break even. The host team was defeated, 68-53, in the first contest. A highly regarded Northwestern crew hung a 58-42 loss on the Rockets in the second contest. Hulsmeyer, Inderrieden and Schwartz were the big guns for the green and white. On February 9, a determined Anna five was plagued by a severe case of tournament jitters which resulted in a 43-38 setback at the hands of a hot Russia five. Inderrieden managed to score 14 points to keep the Rockets in the game. Jackson Center was then dropped from the running by an aroused Anna team, 62-42. Inderrieden scored consistently to lead the scoring with 27 points. Houston eliminated Anna from further competition by eking out a 39-35 victory over the Rockets. Anna won 13 games and lost 9. Individual scoring for the season was as follows: Hulsmeyer, 437 5 Inderrieden, 4023 Schwartz, 139, Heintz, 91, Klopfenstein, 515 Bell, 27 3 K. Billing, 153 Schmitmeyer, 8g Egbert, 7, L.
