Home-away-from-home for visiting students “I loved it. sa»d Michiko Maeya of Japan, as she described her stay in the United States Michiko. or Maeya as she prefers to be called, came to Iowa with a college friend and previous Anita foreign exchange student. Nohko Yamano She spent her five-week stay living with the John Scarlett family Maeya lives on the largest island which is part of the country of Japan. Hon-Shu. Her home is Zama City, which is a large city southwest of Tokyo. She Ives there with her parents and a younger brother Maeya is nineteen and presently attending a junior college in Tokyo Mapring m English, she noted that she wanted to come to the United States to see how the American people live While attending Anita High School, her favorite subjects were music and painting Maeya sad that she enpyed the casual atmosphere and the friendly students and faculty here Moeya was impressed by the Pwa scenery She said that the broad landscape, fresh air. and beautiful sunsets are some of her favorite things about our state. When she finishes college in Tokyo. Maeya would like to find a job which would allow her to travel to the United States frequently Although Pwa was not just what Maeya expected, she feels that she learned a Pt here and wants to come back again very soon “It is very pretty. People are very nice It is very friendly. When I came to Anita, people helped me a Pt. it is diff erent from where I lived, but people helped me along and now I feel a part of Anita ' expresses Roxana Andreu about Anita Roxana is a foreign exchange student from Rosarp, Argentina, who lived with the Lee Peoppe family She arrived in Anita January 15. meeting the cold weather. Roxana says that winter was a new experience for her. At first l was very excited because of snow, and then Pter I was sPk of it. like the sand and warm weather'' Roxana could be seen running through the haHs of AHS with pep and energy She could also be seen sprinting on the track as a member of the girl's track team The choice of school subjects was very popular with Roxana She noted that in Argentina the government chooses subjects. In Argentina. Roxana is a freshman m college studying veterinary medicine She was also doing a http modeling After Anita. Roxana would like to study veterinary medicine m Pwa someday Roxana is used to a large city, as Rosarp is the second largest in her country It has a population of over one mipn There Roxana lives with her mother and sister Apxandrp In speaking of her goals before leaving the United States. Roxana commented. I was hoping for this trp for almost four years It was a very planned thing, and I brought many expectations with me. I hope to gain a Pt of positive things and have gained many so far. It is important to me because I hod to interrupt my career to come here At school I am learning a Pt about We in Pwa. AHS was also wePomed with a revisit from Noriko Yamano. Noriko was a foreign exchange student m the 1983-84 school and stayed with the Francis Va»s family Since her stay in Anita. Noriko has comppted one year of schooling at junior college in Tokyo She is mapring in English and wouP like to work in AmerPa after college, however, does not see it as a likely possP ty After school classes, she works as a part-time operator. After a brpf stay in Anita. Noriko returned to her home m Chiba. Japan with hopes of again returning to Anita to visit her friends 6 - Foreign Exchange

A Serious Note to AHS Assemblies Throughout the year the student body was entertained and informed by numerous school assemblies Two of the assemblies were presented by other high school stu- dents. Bob Power, former Anita student presently drama director at St Joseph High school in Omaha, brought The Quiet Place” production to Anita The one-act play concerned a teenage girl whose boyfriend died at a party from an overdose of alcohol and pills. The octors hoped the production would be of value to students who feel pressured by alcohol and drugs (Pic. 1). The Walnut High School Swing Choir and (Pic 2). Jazz Works enlightened AHS with their musical talents and award-winning performance Grant's 6th Year Presents Peru Warren Grant ogam visited AHS. speak- ing of his adventures in Peru During the program. Grant modeled the latest Peru- vian men's fashions (Pic 4). Grant spent 32 days in Peru during May of 1985. Grant visited Lima. Pucalpa. and other jungle surround villages He spoke about the cul- tures. dress, and food This was Grant's sixth year of travel programs He has presented 280 programs in Iowa this year. Other places formerly presented to Anita students include Thai- land. Morocco, and New Guinea Grant travels alone and does al of his own filming He left April 28th for Indonesia, where he wtf spend 35 days This will be the topic of Grant's presentations next year Britt Small and FESTIVAL Bring Patriotic Tribute to AHS Also providing musical entertainment was the group FESTIVAL. The group played all types of music with their central theme honoring the Vietnam veteran FESTIVAL gave two performances in Anita Britt Smal. the band leader, and the band gave an hour presentation for elementary and high school students in the afternoon FESTIVAL performed that evening for a large public crowd This program was also sponsored by the Music Boosters Festival Family Enterprises Ltd. is a Missouri corporation including a management com- pany. a transportation company, two music publishing companies, and a recording label company. The family is an extended group of professional musicians, entertainers, techni- cal staff, and their families When Britt Smal returned from Vietnam in 1970. his dream was to put his life back together and to form a band While m college, he began forming his band, and in June. 1973. he hit the road with a seven-piece band, which quickly grew to the twelve piece All-American Showband known everywhere as FESTIVAL School News 5
