Starvation We are the Work! We are the Children These words became the slogan of the USA's effort to send aid to the starving nation of Ethiopia. Minions were raised by various organ- izations. including Iowa Cares. A group of 43 performers, ranging from Cyndi Louper to Dionne Warwick to Rick Sprlngsteln to Harry Belafonte, produced a hit single entitled. “We Are the World'', which told people we are the ones who make a brighter day. so let's start giving.” USA for Africa sold several milbon copies and helped to spread American optimism to the needy people of Ethiopia How many diamonds are there in a deck of cards? What is the most intelligent sub-human primate? Who was the actor that got stung in “The Sting''? If these questions sound familiar then you. like many other Americans, have been swept up in the latest craze — trivia. An important factor in the latest fad was the appearance of an innocent looking game caned Trivial Pursuit. Players are asked questions on subjects such as history, science, entertainment and literature. Trivial Pursuit has sold millions of copies making it one of the more popular games in history. Medical Breakthroughs Some key developments were made in the area of medicine during 1984 At the age of two weeks. Baby Foe became the recipient of a baboon heart The transplant kept her alive for twenty days, which is longer than any other human recipient of a heart transplant from another species Baby Fae's transplant was the center of much controversy on both medical and ethical issues. However, for nearly three weeks the young child was also the center of much love and hope She touched some part of all of us during her short life span Another major advancement in heart surgery included the develop- ment and implantation of the first artificial heart, the Jarvik 7. The artificial heart was first used two years ago for recipient Barney Clark. This year there have been two more implants: William Schroeder. who has experienced many complications since his operation in November, and recently Murray Hay don, who alth- ough it is early to tell for sure, has good prospects 5
