Concert Pork with the new Concert Bandshell was opened to the public It was said to be “the nicest band structure in southwestern Iowa. Three years later on June 11. 1925. the first open air band concert was held here A local broadcasting station sent the concert to all parts of the country. About a year ago some large cracks began appearing in the front arch of the Bandshell Preliminary inspections indicated the structure would need some major repairs or face demolition. A committee of interested citizens investigated the problem and formed a “Bandshell Restoration effort Volunteer labor and interest in saving the Bandshell. however, were two things underes- timated when the project began. As the stucco unveiled the frame, there was more damage and deter- ioration than originally expected However, there were other parts of the structure that were in better shape than predicted Every effort is being made to renovate the structure in a manner that preserves the original appear- ance This Is not the only renovation project that has been done on the Bandshell About twenty-five years ago the VFW volunteered labor and had significant funds to stabilize the foundation. More recently high school students recovered and weatherized the entire roof. A scroll or plaque with all the donors' names will be permanently displayed at the Anita City Hall for those who helped save a piece of Anita's heritage Attention. Parents A Lot Of Teenagers Have Died For A Drink IF YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION. Join AHOY (Adults Helping Our Youth) For more information, call 62 3801 Youth Center Reopens This year a group aimed at aiding the Anita youths was formed. AHOY (Adults Helping Our Youth) held meetings to discuss how their support could help One of their major projects was reopening the Youth Center It was decided that it would be under adult supervision at all times. The place was designed so that kids could go and just be themselves. AHOY felt the Youth Center wasn't a success in previous years because there was not enough adult support The majority of the meetings cen- tered on teenage alcoholism. Anita Ives, a patient counselor with the Alcohol and Drug Assistance Agency in Atlantic, presented a program and educational films. AHOY is another fine example of our community's growing concern for youths. Bank Failures Come Close Bank failures are said to be occur- ring at a post-Depression record rate Across the nation the financial squeeze is straining relations between the bankers and the farmers. Iowa has been hit particularly hard. As of this time. Iowa is number one in bank closings Among those closing are Odebolt. Woodbine. Cherokee. A ft on. Story City. Inwood, and Massena In 1983. a controversial report picked the nation's strongest and weakest banks. The Holt Investment Advisory found eight Iowa banks among the nation's five hundred weakest Among those were Mount Ayr which closed in 1984. and Cherokee which shut its doors this year The Steeie State Bank of Cherokee had been in existence for 110 years State officials said the state's de- pressed agricultural economy was the overriding factor in the bank's closing. Like others across Iowa, it was also in trouble with agricultural loans. Odeboldt qualified for Holt's one hundred strongest list in 1983. and today the doors ore closed. The Massena bank struck close to home. However, within a few weeks of its closing, it was reopened as the Union National Bank The times have proven to be unstable for both farmers and bankers. Farmers are struggling to make a living, and banks are striving to protect depositors and stockholders. 3 1984 was a year of pageantry optimism, nationalism, and of reconciliation. The Summer Olym- pics held at Los Angeles gave us a chance to show off our athletes and ability to put on a grand spectacle. The Olympics also allowed Americans to exper- ience an emotion that we hadn't thought ourselves capable of feeling nationalism. After Viet- nam. Watergate, high inflation and unemployment, the hostage crisis and the ever-increasing threat of nuclear war, defeatism was the prevailing attitude. Now, however. America is feeling good The economy, in general, is in a recovery. President Reagan has shown the nation how to put a smiling face on life, we “won in Grenada, and did well at the Summer Olympics The United States is experiencing a rebirth n pride Along with the patriotism, came optimism. Recent suc- cesses have given Americans something to feel good about and the promise of a good future to look to. Be all that you can be, urges the Army. Americans are aiming for that goal Perhaps the most important attitude to result from ‘84 was reconciliation with Vietnam and ourselves. Veterans are now receiving their long overdue thank you in the form of memor- ials, parades and simple hugs. By accepting those who were figures in the war we lost. Americans are finding themselves able to look at past mistakes yet keep an eye on the future, with hope. The 1984 Summer Olympics held at Los Angeles gave America two weeks of pogentry and spectacle From the opening ceremonies, through the weeks of fierce competition and to the tearful closing ceremony, the world was given a taste of how America does things — with style. Out of those two weeks came a new set of American heroes. Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, Mary Lou Retton. Steve Lundquist and Joan Benoit, just to name a few became the represen- tatives of what many had once dreamed of but never achieved With all those who attended the Olympiad, we shared their victories and defeats and wished that it could have gone on forever First Woman Candidate After the pogentry of the Summer Olympics, followed the excitement of the Presidential elections. The can- didates were narrowed down to the two and their running mates In one comer was the Republican-backed team of incumbents Ronald Reagan and George Bush Opposing them were Walter Mondale and his con- troversial partner Geraldine Ferraro representing the Democratic Party Ferraro made history by being the first woman ever to be selected as a vice-presidential candidate Her cam- paign was filled with debate over issues such as abortion and her husband's finances, making the race for the Oval Office a difficult one Despite her and Mondale's loss to Reagan in a landslide election, how- ever. Geraldine Ferraro has managed to keep a bright face on things and show that she is one of the Pepsi Generation Starvation We are the Work! We are the Children These words became the slogan of the USA's effort to send aid to the starving nation of Ethiopia. Minions were raised by various organ- izations. including Iowa Cares. A group of 43 performers, ranging from Cyndi Louper to Dionne Warwick to Rick Sprlngsteln to Harry Belafonte, produced a hit single entitled. “We Are the World'', which told people we are the ones who make a brighter day. so let's start giving.” USA for Africa sold several milbon copies and helped to spread American optimism to the needy people of Ethiopia How many diamonds are there in a deck of cards? What is the most intelligent sub-human primate? Who was the actor that got stung in “The Sting''? If these questions sound familiar then you. like many other Americans, have been swept up in the latest craze — trivia. An important factor in the latest fad was the appearance of an innocent looking game caned Trivial Pursuit. Players are asked questions on subjects such as history, science, entertainment and literature. Trivial Pursuit has sold millions of copies making it one of the more popular games in history. Medical Breakthroughs Some key developments were made in the area of medicine during 1984 At the age of two weeks. Baby Foe became the recipient of a baboon heart The transplant kept her alive for twenty days, which is longer than any other human recipient of a heart transplant from another species Baby Fae's transplant was the center of much controversy on both medical and ethical issues. However, for nearly three weeks the young child was also the center of much love and hope She touched some part of all of us during her short life span Another major advancement in heart surgery included the develop- ment and implantation of the first artificial heart, the Jarvik 7. The artificial heart was first used two years ago for recipient Barney Clark. This year there have been two more implants: William Schroeder. who has experienced many complications since his operation in November, and recently Murray Hay don, who alth- ough it is early to tell for sure, has good prospects 5 Trading Places Over the past few years our school has had the privilege of hosting a number of exchange students. The theme centered around long-standing traditions giving way to new ideas. One of the newest of these was the idea of love. After his daughters all broke away from tradition and married the men they loved. Tevye began to accept this and learned to appreciate it. Like him. most of us. too. find change difficult to accept. That was the magic of this musical — its message is timeless. The number in the cast hit an all time high with fifty people participating. Conference is often thought of as a good preparation for the district contest held in March. It is obvious that this was the case this year as 44 speakers qualified for state level competition by earning Division 1 ratings at the district level. Thirty-four of these participants went on to receive 1 ratings at the state contest Out of these speakers, seven were given outstanding honors and ad- vanced to All-State Pic. 1: Active senior members are: Row 1: Todd Schollars.
