1984 — An Olympic Year Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, was the site of the Winter Olympic Games in 1984 The United States had many hopefuls who turned up gold Bill Johnson — downhi skiing; Scott Hamilton — figure skating; Steve and Phil Mahre — gold and silver in slalom skiing The women's figure skaters were hopeful for the United States, but Katharina Witt from East Germany won the judges' favor with her charm and took the gold Rosaline Sumners received the silver. Tiffany Chin placed In the top ten. Elaine fought the handicap of only half of a left foot at the Olympics. Scott Hamilton also fought the handicap of i health all of his life to end up m Sarajevo. He snatched the gold from all competition and is shown in Pic. 1. In a very emotional moment on the winners' podium between Canada's Brian Orse who won the silver and Czechoslovakia's Josef Sabovtchik (to the left) who took the bronze The Summer Olympics were threat- ened even before they started Russia led the boycotting of the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of a lack of protection and security for its athletes. All but one of the Communist countries followed suit. Surprisingly enough, there were more countries entered In the Summer Olympics than ever before Ride and Bluford: Firsts in Space SaHy K. Ride. 32. and Guion S. Bluford. Jr.. 41. became the first American woman and the first American black astronaut to travel in space. Both were mission specialists, she on the seventh space shuttle trip (June 18-24) and he on the eighth (August 30 - September 5). Clara And Mr. T Rock Craze Hits Hollywood And AHS Two overnight successes were dubbed In '83. They were the Where's the Beef'' lady - Clara, and Mr. T. (Lawrence Tureaud). Everyone caught on to the Wendy's craze, and Where's the Beef? , became a popular question concerning any subject available. In fact it became so over-used that Wendy's decided to cool It for awhile and take Clara out of the spotlight. Mr. T succeeded in bringing a new hero image to TV. When first seen, a smile never dared crack his face. But he softened into a pussycat after a while and was even seen babysitting for Crystal Gayle's baby during the country music awards in the spring. Mr. T was close to home for us when he spoke in Council Bluffs on sub- stance abuse. Anita peers were Invited Kids everywhere were able to learn from their A-Team hero. Cable Entertains Anita Anita welcomed Cable TV In the summer of '83 as a new chance for entertainment. Besides the movies, sports, and specials, videos covered the screens These portrayals of hit songs became a must for music groups if they wanted to be corrpeti- tive In the world of rock-n-rol. Emotional Ending For Happy Days The long-running TV series Happy Days. presented the last of its new shows this season They signed off during their last show when Joani and Chochi were married Tears fell and emotion ran thick. But the reruns will stay on as memories of the good ole' days . Four members of the cast are pictured above In a close moment Donny Most. Marion Ross. Ron Howard, and Henry Winkler Movies took a slight turn this year with the subject of dancing being much more popular. Flashdance . Footloose , ond Breakin ' were just a few of the high-stepping movies. Stephen King was also popular when he terrorized the nation with his books that were turned into movies: “Cujo , Children of the Com , and Fire- starter The senior class fotowed In the dance craze by picking Footloose as the class song. The seniors made a good showing at the dance following the Alumni Banquet by equaling the number of adults who attended The rock-n-rol feeling was carried through by the OEA in a different fashion To raise money for Cody Trent, they held a rock-a-thon. However, this was done in rocking chairs rather than on a dance floor 2 N»wl Jackson rocks music world Michael Jackson secured his fame at the Grammy Awards this year, winning eight of the coveted trophies to take home. His hits Beat ft . Thriller . Billie Jean , Wanna Be Startin' Something , and Pretty Young Thing , rocked the nation throughout 83-84 and were video smashes Jackson gained even more fame through his accident in the Pepsi commercials, his hair was set on fire by a staged explosion. After being hospitalized he recovered to normal health in time to receive his armload of Grammy's shown in Pic.

Reagan Falls Ronald Reagan. 72. U S. President, had a very good year — until October. The U.S. economy had bounced back, relations with allies were good. Then came the Marine Massacre in Lebanon and the con- troversial Grenada invasion, giving his Presidency its worst crises. The campaign for a Democratic nominee for president has been a major event in ‘83-‘84 Eight Demo- crats started the run for President in '84 Mondale. Hart. Jackson. Glenn. Hollings. Cranston, Askew, and McGovern. Only three of these men were able to stay in the long run for the Democratic nomination Former Vice-President Walter Mondale. Sen. Gary Hart, and Rev Jesse Jackson. These three are shown in Pic. 1 as Gary Hart holds up a copy of his book A New Democracy . When asked by In Popularity The U.S. government had to borrow almost $200 billion to make ends meet in the 1983 fiscal year Some say the government need for loans squeezes out private borrowers, raising interest rates and slowing the economic recovery Others disagree step on toes the other two candidates to provide the beef for his new ideas and proposals during a debate sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association in Chicago. The debates this year, as usual, consisted of a lot of jabbing at the opponents In fact. Hart and Mondale seemed to be more concerned with who got the last word In than with the issues. Jackson, although not really competitive, did stick to the issues in this political dance without stepping on toes. Candidates Child Stealing Finally Gets Attention Johnny Gosch used to be the big news in child stealing He now shares that extinction with tens of thousands of other children each year These kidnappings aren't what they used to be A ransom wi no longer free a child; the criminals want only the children - alive or dead Adam was a television movie shown in the fal of 1983 and again in the spring of '84 depicting the life of the parents after the child is taken. At the end of each of these showings, a long list of photos of missing children was broadcast Many of these chil- dren were found, but even more were left unfound. Steps have been taken to decrease tragedies The Missing Children's Act requires that the FBI 1st missing children m a national computer. Communities. like Anita, started programs to finger- print their children as an aid to police If the youngsters should ever be missing Chid Find is a group set up to take responsibility to find these children. These people and organizations are all working for the result shown in the above picture. It is the reuniting of Richard and Diane Poland to their daughter Lori. 3, who was kidnapped in front of her home in Sheridan. Colorado. She was found at the bottom of a toilet pit at a park near Denver 4 N»wi
