They were the Where's the Beef'' lady - Clara, and Mr. T. (Lawrence Tureaud). Everyone caught on to the Wendy's craze, and Where's the Beef? , became a popular question concerning any subject available. In fact it became so over-used that Wendy's decided to cool It for awhile and take Clara out of the spotlight. Mr. T succeeded in bringing a new hero image to TV. When first seen, a smile never dared crack his face. But he softened into a pussycat after a while and was even seen babysitting for Crystal Gayle's baby during the country music awards in the spring. Mr. T was close to home for us when he spoke in Council Bluffs on sub- stance abuse. Anita peers were Invited Kids everywhere were able to learn from their A-Team hero. Cable Entertains Anita Anita welcomed Cable TV In the summer of '83 as a new chance for entertainment. Besides the movies, sports, and specials, videos covered the screens These portrayals of hit songs became a must for music groups if they wanted to be corrpeti- tive In the world of rock-n-rol. President, had a very good year — until October. The U.S. economy had bounced back, relations with allies were good. Then came the Marine Massacre in Lebanon and the con- troversial Grenada invasion, giving his Presidency its worst crises. The campaign for a Democratic nominee for president has been a major event in ‘83-‘84 Eight Demo- crats started the run for President in '84 Mondale. Hart. Jackson. Glenn. Hollings. Cranston, Askew, and McGovern. Only three of these men were able to stay in the long run for the Democratic nomination Former Vice-President Walter Mondale. Sen. Gary Hart, and Rev Jesse Jackson. These three are shown in Pic. 1 as Gary Hart holds up a copy of his book A New Democracy . When asked by In Popularity The U.S. government had to borrow almost $200 billion to make ends meet in the 1983 fiscal year Some say the government need for loans squeezes out private borrowers, raising interest rates and slowing the economic recovery Others disagree step on toes the other two candidates to provide the beef for his new ideas and proposals during a debate sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association in Chicago. The debates this year, as usual, consisted of a lot of jabbing at the opponents In fact. Hart and Mondale seemed to be more concerned with who got the last word In than with the issues. Jackson, although not really competitive, did stick to the issues in this political dance without stepping on toes. Candidates Child Stealing Finally Gets Attention Johnny Gosch used to be the big news in child stealing He now shares that extinction with tens of thousands of other children each year These kidnappings aren't what they used to be A ransom wi no longer free a child; the criminals want only the children - alive or dead Adam was a television movie shown in the fal of 1983 and again in the spring of '84 depicting the life of the parents after the child is taken. At the end of each of these showings, a long list of photos of missing children was broadcast Many of these chil- dren were found, but even more were left unfound. Steps have been taken to decrease tragedies The Missing Children's Act requires that the FBI 1st missing children m a national computer. Communities. like Anita, started programs to finger- print their children as an aid to police If the youngsters should ever be missing Chid Find is a group set up to take responsibility to find these children. This brown-haired, blue-eyed German girl was a member of the junior class She was most commonly seen with a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eyes Bremen. Germany — population 600.000 — Is Katharna's hometown. She was actively involved her church by helping to organize summer camps She entertains others by singing with a band, and writing for her school and church papers She entertains herself with horseback riding, reading, and knitting. Katharina's favorite pastime is going to the disco and she said. My sport is dancing — the tango, fox trot, and waltz — classical dancing, wow! Two of the big events for Katharina at the beginning of the year were homecoming and the musical. South Pacific . About homecoming she commented. I liked it. There was so much enthusiasm with all of the activities. There is nothing like that in Germany. Katharina played the part of Liat. a shy native qhI who didn't have many lines, in South Pacific . She had fun with it and remarked that she wasn't nervous about her performances at an. “A group of us had to write our own play in Germany, and then perform It. That was hard, this play here is easy compared to that When asked about differences in clothes and • food compared to ours, she said. We are more fashionable m Germany Like, our pants are shorter, the way I wear mine. But our clothes are more expensive than here The food is more fattening here. Everyone is always eatmg hamburgers and drinking pop. and there is more bread In Germany I do not have to watch my weight, here I do. Katharina has made definite plans for her life after he: three years of high school in Germany when she gets back I want to be a baby doctor, a pediatrician I would like to go to college in the United States, but If it is too expensive for foreign students. I will go in Germany. We wish Katharina luck in whatever she chooses to attempt in life Hopefully life will bring her joy. always. 6 Foreign Students The 1983-84 school year proved to be a new experience for Anita In more ways than one. The students had become accustomed to having one foreign exchange student roaming through the halls of AHS. but they were doubly treated this year with two “foreigners . Katharina Stoizenberg and Leonardo Salgado received a taste of Anita life this past year As usual, it took both of the students awhile to get used to the American way of life But they eventually made places for themselves among the Anita students. They both added a lot of personality to AHS and by school's end it was realized that their places would not be easily filled in 84-85. Mr. Leonardo Salgado arrived In Anita on January 23, 1984 as the second foreign exchange student for Anita He stayed with the Herb Waddell family and commented. “I have a lot of fun with them. At 15 years old, Leonardo was a member of the sophomore class. Being from Brazil Leonardo had some difficulty understanding the English language at first but said, most of the AHS students are very helpful I have lots of fun with them too. In Brazil. Leonardo has an older brother and a younger sister In Ns high school back home, he participated in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and bowling He also enjoys playing atari, watching videos, playing cards, listening to music and expressed a unique liking for the snow As is customary with most exchange students, the topic of Ns impression of the United States has become a popular question for Leonardo When he first came he remarked, l was impressed I like it here and have a lot of fun. But also said, There isn't a big difference between living In Brazil and staying here in the U.S. After having a chance to get to know Leonardo, Troy Waddell, his host brother, remarked, I like Leonardo; he's a lot of fun,. He enpys bowling especially because he did that in Brazil. I think he will have a good time here!
