Oklahoma — 1 Keeping School Spirit Alive Each of us provided a piece to finish the many puzzles at AHS. Mitch Cullen and Jack Barber laid down the foundation as they were elected Student Council president and vice president. Cullen and Barber based much of their campaign on the lack of school spirit and how they thought it could be revived. With the leadership of Student Council, many activities were planned. During Homecoming, some old traditions were brought back such as the bonfire and the snake dance. Something new was an old-fashioned scavenger hunt where students looked for objects that symbolized a teacher. Still others were kept alive like the Powder Puff game as shown in Pic. I. In Pic. 2. Next years girl's team will only have one returning golfer-Julie Christensen. Christensen had a stroke average of 63. The boys also had a balanced team with three people medaling at different meets. They were Lyle Scheelenberg. Tim Richter, and Brian Wedemeyer. Unlike the girls, the guys will only lose two seniors Richter and Cullen, their averages were 50 and 59 respectively. Though they had five new players this year, five others have been out for three years, giving next year’s team a bright outlook. Brian Wedemeyer was one of the three boys to take medalist honors. His average was 51. he is seen practicing in Pic. 3. Senior Mitch Cullen takes a mighty swing to put the ball on the green as teammate Tom Christensen look on in Pic. 1 Christensen's average was 56. The most notable is the replenishing of treasury funds. When the year began the student council treasury had almost no funds. This lack of funds forced the council to be more conservative in many of its projects. The main project of this year's council was Homecoming. Under the leadership of President Mitch Cullen and Vice President Jack Barber the council turned AHS into Cameloti The Land of Enchantment, during Homecoming week. M oil Man tami« T. A y' KJt The Debate team of Rhonda Bartelson. Jack Barber as the negatives, and Erin Pettinger and Denise Rathman as affirmatives placed 3rd at state competition. This year's resolution wasi That the United States should significantly curtail its arm sales to other countries. This topic provided many loopholes in wording and gave the negatives many generic arguments and a distinct advantage. After much research, work, and cases like Latin America, High Technology.and the MX missile, the team of Pettinger and Rathman opted for the curtailment of AWACS to Saudi Arabia. The second Varsity team was made up of Rhonda Bartelson and Mitch Cullen as negatives, and Mark Kopp and Roger Simmons for the Affirmatives. Kopp and Simmons proposed to cut arm sales to Turkey. The novices also had two teams. The affirmatives being Denise Behrends. Sherry Vais, Troy Christen- sen. and Fletcher Nichols. Their cases were nuclear weapons, and human rights, respectively. Pic. Their first stop was the Fontanelle Forest. Here the group hiked about on muddy trails during the morning hours. Teri Steele will vouch for the condition of the trails as she set the record for muddy falls with three. The next stop was the Henry Doorley Zoo. While the group was at the zoo. Mother Nature finally let loose and let the rain poor. At the end of the day 64 soaked kids and their 10 drenched sponsors climbed back on the bus. and after a quick stop at McDonalds, they headed home. In spite of the weahter. fun was had by all. Pic. Noriko Yamano spent only a short time in Anita, but her cheerful face and personality will be missed by us all. as well our advisor Noel Wingate, principal Gary Currie, and teachers Diane Ernst and Joan Lane. Throughout our lives, we are continually working on the puzzles that make our lives. This year at AHS. it seemed as though there were extra puzzles, and everyone was trying to fit the pieces together. With new faces, ideas and changes, pieces were lost and found.
