Looking back at the people of AHS, as years went by styles have changed. Through four decades, fads have come and gone and some have returned again. In the 80's, fashions are freer and individual choice determines style. FROM 1939 In 1939, the first yearbook was called the Anitan. Girls' hair was worn in curls and drawn back from the face. Boys had short hair and it was slicked back. Dresses were tailored and went to below the knees while suits had wide lapels. Pic. 1. Lawrence Hofmeister (Class of '39) Pic 2. Even after the 1913 school is gone, the memory of it will linger in the minds of any- one who went there. (Pic 4) Styles in the seventies became freer. Several staff members traveled to Drake University in September for a yearbook workshop. Students got ideas for the yearbook and learned how to do layouts. Another project the yearbook sponsored was selling Spartans Do It Better T-shirts, shorts, and socks. These money-making projects are used to help offset the cost of the yearbook. The drill team performed a routine to the song Star Wars at Homecoming. On Parents' night, the cheerleaders entertained the parents with a dance to the song You're just what I needed . The summer of '79 was energetically spent by the football cheerleaders and drill team. The cheerleading squad went to Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville for a week at camp. Members of the drill team spent a week at Iowa State University at Ames getting new ideas. The Cheerleaders received three superiors, two outstandings, one excellent and a super star squad ribbon. The drill team members came back with several awards also. Both the cheerleaders along with the drill team came back with enthusiasm and new ideas to start off the year. The basketball and wrestling cheerleaders along with the drill team had a successful season — full of pep and energy. The basketball cheerleaders had four full pep buses go to Creston for the Boys' District Tournament — a record number. The wrestling cheerleaders cheered on two wrestlers to state. The drill team had four performances for home games. All cheerleaders and drill teams performed for the Julie Weber Memorial Scho- lorship game. The wrestling squad danced to the song Making It ; the drill team performed to the song, Shake Your Body Down . PIC 1. Basketball Cheerleaders. Front: Jill Jessen, mascot. Michelle Young was a new member of the wrestling team as a senior. Some wrestlers commented that at first it was different to have a girl on the team, but after awhile they didn't even notice her. The dual record of 8-3 is the best record the wrestlers have had. This included wins over all the teams in the conference. This is the best season the wrestlers have had as a team, comments Mr. Willet, head wrestling coach. The wrestlers started out the season with a first place win at the Exira tournament. They came in with second place at the East Union tournament later in the year. Anita also took second place at the Conference with several individual first place titles, including Sean Grant at 98 pounds, Frank Young at 138 pounds, and Dave Waddell at 185 pounds. Sectionals were held at Anita this year and AHS had three district qualifiers: Tim Wheelock, Dave Waddell, and Wendall Miller. At the district tournament Waddell and Miller finished with second places and won a berth at the state tournament. Due to Gary Grant's injuries, for the remainder of the year many 112 weight class matches were forfeited. Coach Willet also commented that the wrestlers developed greatly over the past 7 or 8 years but there is still some room for improvement. The girls placed high in all of their meets and placed first in their own Spartanette Relays. Three records were broken. The 400 meter relay team (Kay Ehrman, Dee Christensen, Kelly Wessels, and Jill Neighbors) broke the record with a time of 52.5 seconds. The 800 meter relay team (Janet Jessen, Lori Harris, Kelly Wessels, and Jill Neighbors) shattered the old record with a time of 1:49:5. Neighbors broke the 100 meter dash record with a time of 12.7 seconds. Neighbors also made it into the 100 point club with a total of 133Vi points. This year the girls' track team accomplished a goal that they set at the beginning of the season — to send a relay team to the State Track Meet at Drake. But instead of sending one team, they sent two — the 400 and 800 meter relay team (see Pic 3). Pic 1. Girls' Track. Stu- dents now think of Mr Burke in connection with American History, American Govern- ment, speech, and debate. Speech and debate are Mr. Burke's specialties. In 1979, there were over 60 students in the National Forensic League (NFL). The competition for membership in the NFL is al- most as great as for member- ship in the A-Club — a surpris- ing fact for high school stu- dents. Since Mr. Burke started debate in Anita in 1962, our teams have been the winners in State Debate in '67, '68, and '74. They were Runners-up in '72, '75, '77, and '78. Thanks to Mr. Burke's supervision Anita hosts an annual speech contest, the Walnut Hill Classic and has hosted the District Individual Speech Contest. A visiting speech coach summed up Mr. Burke's place in Anita. After passing by the trophy case laden with various speech trophies, she com- mented in the coaches' lounge that this school had as many speech trophies as other schools have for sports. The answer came simply, This is John Burke's school. BEST FOR THE JOB These are the people behind the scene who keep our school clean and running smoothly. These people deserve a vote of thanks. Thanks to the custodians and student janitors, when tomorrow comes we don't see the mess we left behind yesterday. Pic 1. Student Jani- tors. We who must remain are never ready for such pain. Even our prayer would be: Not yeti Not yet, dear Cod, another day with us let our beloved stay. Promgoers that weekend were shocked at the news. Ross was active in football, FFA, band, and especially basketball. As a sopho- more, he served as football manager. The class of '80 dedicates these pages to Julie Weber, who died in a car wreck her sophomore year. Realization I can accept it now — You're gone. The words pierce my throat With the pain of disbelief Until they finally rush out And hit me with the truth — The truth I wasn't prepared for. It seems that all good things That pass my way in life Slip out as quickly as they come. Memories — Yes, they're here. But memories can't reach out To reassure me when I'm sad. Memories can't laugh with me, Or cry with me. They only exist. Linger — And stare at me Each time I think of you. I realize now that it was meant To happen this way. I learned to know you. Accept you, And to care for you. It was a feeling I'd never felt; A world I never lived in But suddenly it crashed And tumbled to the ground. I gazed at the broken pieces and thought: What's left? Where do I go from here? • Now you weren't there to pull me up. I thought of you — Your strength, And I pulled myself up. I stood alone And looked about. You're not here; I realize that, But the strength of you within me Will keep me standing forever, by Colleen Cassell Tammy Marnin — president Kelly Smith — secretary Curt Andersen Bruce Peterson — vice- president Mark Squires — treasurer Ellen Aupperle waters of the river to success Jo Brown David Christensen Cory Christensen Mitch Cochran Happy Birthday! Yes, 1980 marks the 15th Birthday of the Anita Youth Cen- ter. Started by the A.H.S. class of 1965 as a class project, the youth center has survived wind, fire and youth. Originally named the Corner Pocket by Paul Schaaf, the center now is usually known as simply the Anita Youth Center. Its first president was Carolyn Scholl. Total control of the center is vested in the senior class; they must raise the money necessary for operation, handle all discipline problems and keep the center open. Inflation also raises problems for the center, as it faces the- same problems of the family. In the fall of 1966, the class of 1967 decided to hold a pancake supper to raise money. Gary Kloppenburg, president, started the annual supper and last year's seniors served close to 800 people and raised close to $1,300. Many former A.H.S. graduates remember the countless hours of hard work remodeling the old Ruggle's Grocery Store into the Corner Pocket . Items such as tearing out the old shelves, replacing the back window with the glass from the meat case, those who fell through the floor, and, of course, the fire in 1972, almost destroying the center. A generous community's spirit allowed the rebuilding of the center into what we now see. They took along their lunch in coolers, lots of hamburger and hotdogs, and seven cases of pop. Almost everyone managed to get soaked including Mr. Burke, who got a whole cooler full of water poured on him. Mr. Burke grabbed a pop can and tried to soak those who got him. A souvenir was brought back in memory of the skip day — a big rock that was taken from a backwoods trail. Pic 1. The senior class anxiously waiting for the bus to start for Springbrook Park. Pic. 2. FACING GRADUATION Faces of old and faces of new. People we know and people we knew. Growing together then drifting apart. Always an ending and now a new start. At graduation we all grew nearer And all of our friends seemed so much dearer. And we said our final goodbye. One last embrace and once more cry, A keep in touch and a promise I will' A remember when but, better still, A place in my heart, you'll always stay, This is what's said as we go on our way. 84 WE REMEMBER THE SPECIAL MOMENTS Thirty of the class of 1980 have spent thirteen years in the Anita Community Schools. Through these years many things have happened — good and bad, but we all learned that life is not all fun and games. Pic. 1. Norm Amiot, Michelle Phillips, and Pam Russell beam as they break out. Pic. 2. The class of '80 sit all together for probably the last time. The class chose Jo Brown, Liz Retz, and Mark Squires to speak at Commence- ment. Jo Brown's speech concerned the world and how the class could make it a better place to live (Pic 3). Liz gave her speech on how much help and encouragement you get from parents, relatives, and friends. She told the class that the memory of Julie Weber would be in their hearts for years to come. She reminded them that there are no endings — each phase of your life is a new beginning. Mark Squires encouraged his classmates to go look for opportuni- ties and not wait for opportunity to come knock on your door (Pic. 4). The class of '80 shared their graduation with Mrs. Dorothy Ehm, the home ec teacher. Liz Retz presented her with a plaque for her 25 years of teaching — seven at AHS (Pic 5). 55 SENIOR NORM AMIOT — Deciam 4; Yearbook 3.
