The annual popcorn pick-up in the fall started the season. The NFL uses this for concessions at home basketball games and tournament games. On Feb. 24, AHS hosted 564 students at the District Speech Con- test. Two weeks later, Anita hosted 18 schools and 350 students at the 12th Walnut Hill Classic. NFL also presented as a money-making project, the movie ' 'The Silent Witness'' through the courtesy of former members Craig Hol- land and Tom Knowlton. The speech season ended with their banquet at the Redwood with the underclassmen roasting the Class of '79. PIC. 1. The banquet began at 7:00 p.m. Students boogied to the sounds of ' 'Blind Side from 9:00-12:00 p.m. Prom-goers then changed from their party duds — tuxes, suits, formals, and heels — to street duds — jeans, slacks, tennies — before attending the movies 1 'The Wiz'' and ' 'Animal House'' at the Anita Theatre. Immediately following the shows, breakfast was served by junior mothers at the Legion Hall from 5:00-6:30 a.m. Prom '79 went smoothly for most juniors and seniors. Many underclassmen gained valuable experience for the years ahead. The girls ended their season with a 1-14 record, but learned many im- portant things such as teamwork and fighting until the end. One highlight of the year was breaking the school's scor- ing record. The Spartanettes scored 95 points against Cumberland-Massena to break the previous record of 92 points. Mary Wessling, an A.H.S. guard, was named to All-Conference 2nd team. As the season progressed, the wrestlers increased their strength by lifting weights. A new drill this year was jumping rope, which they did every night for about 15 minutes. All this work eventually paid off at the end of the season during Section- als , where 6 wrestlers advanced to the districts tournament and they took the championship. At Districts they won 4th place, with Wendall Miller, and Dave Waddell qualifying for the State Wrestling Tournament. PIC. 1. District Qualifiers. Row 1: Troy Whee- lock, Rod Williamson, Mike Young.
