This year, 1976, America is celebrating its Bicentennial. We have had 200 years of war, poverty, unemployment, and inflation, but above all these strifes, we have experi- enced 200 years of freedom. The United States is a melting pot that has grown and de- veloped into a unified nation. To our country and the 200 years of freedom, we, the Spar- tan Staff of 1975-76 dedicate this book. The new high school will be west of the football field. A total of $1, 558, 000 worth of bonds were sold for 51, 500 square feet of new building construction. Don Brichacek, PICTURED UPPER LEFT, was kept busy this year with final considerations for the new building which will be completed, hopefully, by January 1, 1978. The Anita Community School Board, PICTURED FAR LEFT, was busy with construction and mate- rial bids along with its administrative duties. SEATED FROM LEFT: John Cassell, chairman; Mervin Christensen; and Jack Retz. STANDING FROM LEFT: R. W. Kelloway and James Mai- der. The Spartanettes got off to a slow start this season, but with every loss there was a gain. A gain of determination and enthusiasm which brought the Spartanettes second in their sectionals and the consolation trophy at the Lenox Christmas tournaments. The Spartanettes gave their opponents many anxious moments as in the first ten games they came within ten points or less of winning. This season there were many changes as a new coach had to get to know a whole new set of girls and also the girls had to learn the new ideas of a new coach. Not only did the Spartanettes learn to fight back twice as hard after a loss, but from these losses they gained a teamwork. This season for the Spartanettes ended as a fair season and next years season should be twice as successful. BUT, RISING EVERYTIME WE FELL Pic 1 — Dona Lane jumps up to score for the Spartanettes. This years boys track team was a very young team consisting mostly of freshman and sophmores. Most of our points were gained in the field events. Next years squad has all the makings of a winning season. Said Mr. Kuberski SUMMER SPORTS SET AHS FREE r. Yes, the summer sports really do set AHS free. It gives each student able to participate in either softball or baseball without having to worry about getting ready for school the night after a game. The summer sports of AHS; especially these of 1976 will be long remembered. This year's softball team has high hopes of a winning season because they have all of last years' members back this year. Bob Gardner, their new coach says they stand a good chance to win the conference champion- ship this year. The main standouts for the team this year were: Carol Hart- ley, Jo Kelloway, Dawnel Smith, Liz Fisher, Cindy Larsen, Sandy Schuler, Darlene Kraus, Sandy Westphalen, Julie Rich, and Carla Mailander. There were 15 players on this year's baseball squad and 11 of them were returning lettermen. Because of strong hitting and good defense the Spartans turned in a satisfying season. Coached by Mr. Hora, this year's members were: Mike Petersen, Ron Jensen, Tom Harris, Marc Cochran, Scott Mamin, Mike Cams, A1 Stanley, Steve Petersen, Daryl Armstrong, Darren Littleton, Randy Reindl, Joe Richter, Cory Christensen, Troy Wheelock, and Mitch Cochran. 38 ATHLETE’S TAKIN’ IT EASY Every year the athletes of AHS work hard so that their team may benefit from their work. The yearbook, edited by Bob Power and Carol Hartley has tried to put to- gether a yearbook that will interest all readers. Each phase of the school year was covered by the yearbook. It is hoped that the readers of this yearbook find that each phase has been treated equally. The SPY staff has worked diligently each week to inform the students and community about school activities. Chief editor Tina Ohms tries to handle the publications as farily as possible. Although many of the readers do not agree with everything printed in the SPY it is felt by many that this year has been one of the best for the SPY. THE NUT FACTORY, by Jay Christopher was an all school play about the three McNutt sisters and their tramas and tribulations of running a half-way house for mentally disturbed teenagers. While the play was undeniably a farce, it hoped to provide a real and meaningful look into a new form of theraphy that is being used very successfully in deal- ing with disturbed young people. This rapid moving, two-act comedy was performed April 2 and 3. The Senior Class financed the play and reaped the profits. Interest in the production was stimulated by the fact that AHS has not produced a Theatrical performance for three years. Mrs. Lynell Anderson directed the play and Therese Tierney was the student director. Not Pictured — Christine , (Secy. ) DEBATE VOICE — THE GREATEST INSTRUMENT OF FREEDOM The varsity team was relatively inexperienced this year with only Seth Lane and Mark Huff as experienced debaters. But this didn't stop the debaters from upholding Anita's tradition of plac- ing in state. Hoover, Dowling, Sioux City Heelan, Ames, Atlantic, Ft. Dodge, and Anita were just a few of the tournaments the varsity debaters attended this year. District debate turned out successfully with a 3-1 record for the varsity debaters. This was qualification enough to continue to state, where they received fifth place. The Varsity Debaters this year were: Larry Vais, Gloria Steele, Seth Lane, Mike Petersen, Tina Ohms, Kevin Beschorner, Mark Huff. Tina Ohms shows LuAnn and Gloria the funda- mentals of debate. 46 The year of 1975 started out with an uncertain destina- tion for the novice debaters, consisting of one junior, two sophomores, and seven freshmen. The debaters were kept busy at Denison, Anita, Atlan- tic, Roosevelt, Hoover, and various other tournaments. They placed second at Denison, second at Anita, and first at Anita. District debate, at Hoover High School in Des Moines, contained much competition for novice debaters as they competed with Valley Jr. High, the number one Class B team in the state this year, Ogden, Denison, and Nor- walk. They didn't make it to state, but they gained much experience to continue Anita's tradition of winning de- bates in the future years. The Novice Debaters this year were: Sandra Schellenberg, Brad Westphal, Keri Harris, Tom Harris, Craig Huff, LuAnn Armstrong, Mike Cullen, Clark Neighbors, Renee Peron, Dan Parker. Membership to NFL is acquired when a student has earned 25 speaker points. After they have earned 75 points, they have earned a degree of honor. A degree of excellence is acquired by achieving 150 points and 250 points must be earned for a degree of distinction. The highest award is The double ruby. Mark Huff was the only person to achieve the double ruby this year. The year of 1975-1976 has been a busy year for the NFL members hosting two debate tournaments, and individual speech contest of all fields, and the District individual contest. Added to the NFL member's responsibilities is the task of selling concessions at the basketball games to raise money for the annual NFL banquet. The NFL banquet is the climax of the speech and debate season in which awards are given to those who have made achievements throughout the year. AHS, again, struck with wrath at the Little Eight Con- ference Tournament taking the trophy for the seventh consecu- tive year with 189 points aloof from all other schools -- the second place school had 44 points. At the Anita Invitational they also won first place. To complete the year they improved last year's old record of 31 l's to a new record of 35 l's at the state contest, a majority of these coming from underclassmen. Eight outstanding speaker awards were received by AHS students at state. This ties the record set last year and also was bettered by only one other school in the state in 1976. The Future Homemakers of America had a busy year this school year. Officers elected for the 75-76 year were: Carol Hartley-- president; Deb Steffens--vice-president; Dawnel Smith-- secretary; Beck Mamin--treasurer; Phyllis Waddell-- projects chairman; Parliamentarian--Dawn Turner; Rec- reation chairman--Pam Hahn; Kathy Brown--historian; Shelli Miller--music chairman. Besides the many parties that the FHA enjoyed, such as the Hayride-Halloween- party, the Christmas party, Lake Anita picnic, and a pizza party to inform the 8th graders what FHA is, the FHA was busy with many different projects. On October 24, 25, and 26 the girls completely restored the girls rest room at the High School. This was quite a task, but well worth it. Another project the FHA worked on was sending Christmas gifts to all the children at the Christian Home in Council Bluffs. Another project the girls did was presenting a Bicentennial flag to the high school. The FHA accomplished many other projects such as the Sweetheart Ball. FHA 76 gave the girls time to learn to get along with others, to take on responsibility, and to understand themselves as well as others. WELCOME TO 1. The Junior High float placed fifth in the parade competition. 2. Welcome To Your Nightmare was the theme for Homecoming 1975. Homecoming was dedicated to Mrs. Madeline Moore and Mrs. Marie Mailand- er. Being the fifth grade teachers in Anita for 17 years have enabled them to surpass the teaching level. They do understand and communicate with students, and have the ability to cope with student problems. Yes, it is true He Profits Most, Who Serves Best. We feel that Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Mailander have served their school and community the best anyone could. That is why we dedicated Homecoming 1975 to Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Mailander. 70 YOUR NIGHTMARE 1. Senior float captured first place. 2. Freshmen earned third place. 3. Juniors received second place. 4. This day these 44 young adults ended their high school career. They received their diplomas and entered into a new life. A life that would bring them happiness, sorrow, fortune and luck. It was a day of excitement and sadness. The excitement of being a graduate; a person on their own for the very first time. And the sadness of leaving your very best friends be- hind you. You know you must leave them, but there will always be a special place in your heart for them. All of this adds up to GRADUATION DAY 1976. 77 SENIOR INDEX TODD BESSIRE—Football 1,2, 3, 4; Basketball 1,2,3, 4; Captain 3,4; A11-Conference 4; Golf 1; A-Club 2,3, 4; Pep Club 3,4; NFL 2; Debate 2; Prom Server 2; King Canidate 4.
