Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1975 volume:

In 1875 a small group of citizens joined together to incorporate the city of Anita, Iowa. Since then the pop- ulation of Anita has grown to 1187. The city fathers have also added an airport, golf course, and probably Anita's most important attraction, Lake Anita. The 1975 SPARTAN is dedicated to this city on its Centen- nial year. The SPARTAN is dedicated to the people who make the town's progress possible. The '75 SPARTAN is dedicated to all the residents, past and present, who have made Anita important. The highlight of the season was the game with our arch- rival, Adair-Casey. To the satisfaction of the Spartans and their excited fans, the Bombers were defeated. Selected for 1974 Little 8 All-Conference Teams were: Adrian Tierney, Pat Cassell, Royce Turner, and Kurt Smith. Those receiving honorable men- tion were: Gary Ohms, Larry Schuler, Tom Barber, Dave Wahlert, Ron Jensen, Rellen Shannon and Brian Nelson. 25 Words Of Wisdom October 4 was a day well worth remembering, as the students of AHS celebrated Homecoming 1974 with the the Words of Wisdom. The football players chose as their queen candidates (shown in picture at right) Sheila Pine, Sheryl Bessire, Shirley Pine, and Julie Harris. Chosen as king candidates were Pat Cassell, Adrian Tierney, Kurt Smith, and Dave Wahlert. King and Queen of 1964, Clark Jeppesen and Sheryl Thompson Wittke, crowned this year's King and Queen, Sheryl Bessire and Kurt Smith. Jill Jackson and David Boldt served as crown bearers. The festivities began Thursday night with the snake dance and bonfire pep rally. After the excitement of Friday afternoon, the Spar- tans played Stuart-Menlo. The Homecoming game was one well fought, but the Spartans were defeated by the Cyclones. The climax of Homecoming weekend was the dance Saturday night at the High School, where the students enjoyed the music of Thunder Rush. Homecoming 1974 was dedicated to Mrs. Blanche Hall for her willing and devoted service to AHS. She was presented a bouquet of roses at the coronation ceremony. The traditional Homecoming parade which was led by the band and drill team included class floats a Booster Club float, and the fire truck carrying the football players and cheerleaders. Following the parade, the townspeople gathered at the bandshell for a pep assembly led by the cheerleaders. 28 Highlighting Homecoming '74 was the coronation. The Royal Court was ushered onto the stage by seniors Mike Barnes and Gary Ohms. The official announcement of who would reign as this year's King and Queen was made by the President of the Student Council, Darrell Hocken- berry. The pep club then provided the entertainment with a skit. Class floats were judged by local merchants. The results were as follows: Seniors-First place-'! Came, I Saw, I Conquered; Juniors- Third place- Give Us Victory And Give Them Death; Soph- omores-Second place- The Strong Shall Survive, And the Weak Shall Perish; Freshmen- Fourth place- Please Do Squeeze the Cyclones; Junior High- Confucius Say: Cyclones are Winless Against Spartans. 29 The Players? The boys' team worked hard this year and showed plenty of hustle, but were hindered by lack of height throughout the year. They finished the year with an 8 win - 10 loss record but they hope for a better year in '76, as all but three players will return. 1. Two points down- Let's go guys! 2. They’re The Best Posting Anita's best dual record in many years with a predominately 9th and 10th grade squad spells suc- cess for the wrestlers and Coach Ron Johnson. The purchase of the weight machine aided in the conditioning of AHS wrestlers. Improve- ment of times and efforts, however, character- ized the desire of this year's squad. Frank Kopp was a consistent point getter in the shot put, as was Seth Lane in the 440, and Dennis Murphy in the low hurdles. The Spartans turned in some of their best times in their own Spartan Relays which boosted them to a 5th place finish. Spartans par- ticipated in the following meets: Tiger Relays, Ram Relays (8 pts.), Dane Relays, Spartan Re- lays (5th), A-C Relays (6th - Class B), and Dis- trict. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Carol Hartley, Patty Fisher, Julie Harris, and Dona Lane lowered the record to 70.9 Three other records were broken, all by Dona Lane. Her time of 30.5 in the 220 hurdles and 15.1 in the 100 meter hurdles placed her in the top 15 in the state. Dona placed 3rd in high jump at the State Track Meet. Dona cleared 5'4 , which tied a State Track Meet mark and raised her own school record from 5'2 to 5'4 . 37 There were sixteen par- ticipants in High School base- ball, among them, eleven lettermen. Many underclass- men played, with only three Seniors out. The season reached its peak when the Spartans received second in sectional tournaments. 1. First Row: Steve Petersen, Ron Jensen. Seven positions were changed throughout the year. But evi- dently this year was for the benefit of the team. All mem- bers are back this year so this season should be equally successful. 2. It’s A Game Of Precision The record for girls' golf this year was 2 wins and 4 losses. Although they had a slow start because of being young and inexperienced, the girls team won the Little 8 title. In the opinion of Coach Jerry Ho- ra, everyone improved 200%. The boys finished their season with a 10 win and 2 loss record and placed fourth in Sectionals. The upset of the season was beating Corning by 2 strokes. Good team depth was shown by 7 people capable of shooting in the 40's. Senior Mark Aupperle qualified for the District Tournament. The speech students' hard work gave them great success, as they set a new record for excellent (one) ratings (30) at the State Speech Con- test. For the sixth consecutive year, Anita won the Conference Team Championship. Traveling from border to border speaking, they were also awarded 15%additional team trophies. Coaches who assisted in these honors were John Burke, Ruthe Brocker, and Mary Lee. This year the ambitious NFL members took on the responsiblity of running the concession stand at all home basketball games. This brought on such fun events as picking up, shelling, drying, and cleaning the popcorn, and selling concessions. Seven members of the class competed as varsity debaters in tournaments held over the state. In state competition, Anita captured the dis- trict championship at Norwalk and at the state tournament held at Valley High School in West Des Moines earned a position as one of the two teams to battle for the state championship on television. In that debate, televised by KIEBN, Anita lost a close, split decision 2-1 to Lincoln. In the Iowa Forensic League A.H.S. earned a tie for second place with a 10-2 record. Members competing in these tournaments were: Adrian Tierney, Dave Wahlert, Pat Cassell and Darrell Hockenberry. They were joined by Mark Aupper- le, Dan Fay, Tom Barber and junior, Mark Huff. This was the third time in four years that Anita debaters have battled for the state championship. t.+fer Cf-e - v.1 J Lc ‘...........' ■ ■ ResJt; rS IuJak, vb CG CVCOj V € • u)e COO V OK6 vS. o-. Also, some of us will never forget taking ACT tests at 7:00 a.m. Memories also brought to mind the fun we had, such as; skipping clauses to supposedly work on the gym, going to after prom parties, and not getting in until late the next morning. Being a Senior brought more responsibilities, worries about credits and future plans, and the responsibilities of running the Youth Center. Some of the good times we remember were; finally winning first place float for Homecoming, having a successful pancake supper,beat- ing A-C in both football and basketball, and looking forward to SKIP DAY and graduation. 76 Graduation 1975 The largest graduating class in AHS's history, with 61 members, received diplomas at the Wiota Gymnasium on May 22. Com- mencement speakers were (below) Darrell Hockenberry, Dave Wah- lert, Pat Cassell, and Adrian Tier- ney, members of the graduating class. Graduation 1975 signified the attainment of goals set through- out the past thirteen years, and the establishment of new ones. Al- though the graduates were faced with the thought of losing track of good friends, few tears were shed. With the hope of success in the fu- ture, the Seniors left the gym ready to take the responsibilities handed them with the diploma. 77 Senior DOUG AGGEN-FootbalI Manager 2,3,4; Golf 3,4; Wrest- ling 1,2, Manager.3. Anita Community High School Founded 1869 Anita, Iowa Volume XXXVI 1975 at AHS was losing a Homecoming football game but winning again on another Friday night. This year at AHS was talking to friends in the hallways and going to basketball games on cold winter nights. Life at AHS can't really be described in just a few events; it was just having friends, helping friends, and being a friend. The SPARTAN staff hopes that we have pre- sented this year at AHS fairly and equally! 80
