Coach Hartley began a rebuilding program for the 71-72 season. The Spartanettes, tied for the Little-8 Title throughout the season, were defeated by Earlham in the deciding game to fall to second place with an 8-4 record. The only returning letter-winner. Peg Harris, led the short forward court with an average of 24 points a game. In conference play. Peg ranked fifth in scoring, field- goal accuracy, and forward rebounds. Becky Karns, who became a regular for the last five games of the year, averaged 12 points a game, and aided with her hustle and floor-play. Filling out the forward court was Rita Sullivan who ranked ninth in field goal ac- curacy and fourth in free-throw percentage. The guard court, who substituted hustle and desire for lack of height, limited the opponents to less than 50 points on occasions, and established a defensive average of 50.1, the best in conference play. The only senior guard, Charolette Boysen, ranked fourth in conference intercep- tions with 38 steals, and ninth in rebounds. Junior guard, Diane Kluever was first in the conference in rebounds with 148 in 12 games and ninth in the state, and third in guard interceptions in conference play. Also returning next year is Becky Power, who aided Diane and Charolette in the backcourt with her ball-handling ability and hustle. The Spartanettes ended their season in the first round of sectionals with a close loss to O-M, 42-40. Coach Hartley loses only four seniors, so with the majority of the team back, the Spartanettes can look forward to an exciting 72-73 season.

Harold DeRocher and Mike Johnson were not present for the picture. WE’VE GOT POWER . . . Self-discipline is a key factor in developing good wrest- lers. Their long hours of training and abstinence for making weight strengthens endurance and will power. Good sports- manship and a friendly, yet competitive handshake means a lot. The 1971-72 wrestling season was an experiencing year. In this season the Spartan grapplers hod eight heart-breaking losses, but these were nearly outbalanced by two exciting ties and the first duel-meet win in three years. The Spartans tied with Dexfield and Exira. The highlight of the season came when the Spartans returned to beat Exira, 39-25, in the last duel-meet of the season. The exhausting training hod paid off. Much was gained in the way of self-satisfaction and pride through individual accomplishments as well as working for the team. The two best records by the Anita grapplers were a 12-2 record posted by senior Mike Johnson at 167 lbs. and a 13-6-1 record posted by junior Dan Larsen at 1 19 lbs. Anita's Rick Neighbors at 105 lbs. placed 4th and Dan Larsen ploced 2nd in the Exira Tournament. At the Coon Rapids Tournament, Dan Larsen, again, ploced 2nd while on J. V. Larry Schuler and Kurt Smith both ploced 4th. At the final tournament at the Iowa School for the Deaf, Dan Larsen and Mike Johnson both placed 2nd. Though the boys suffered defeats, they developed a pride which was the in- centive for working to their capacity and tolerating many sacrifices. With only three seniors on the squad, the Spar- tans will be back with a more experienced squad next year. Coach Ron Johnson gives Bob a pep J. V.—Seated—Larry Schuler and talk. Pat Barnes.
